I've been meaning to message you. I'm just a hop skip and a jump from you in baxter tn. I have a bunch of sassafras plenty big enough for the saw. I run a norwood and it takes a 36in to max it out but only cuts a 26 in slab. But I wanted to pick your brain about selling lumber in tn. I talked to a guy willing to come out from Texas to stamp some lumber for structural
Nathan I’ve been watching your videos for almost 3 years now and one thing that has changed over the years; and I like it. Is the talk time in front of the logs before you cut them. They have gotten more informative and give me those old PBS vibes kind of like the wood wright shop back in the day. Love it
Thanks appreciate that
I was going to say the same. Still touches on the basics for newbies and opens the door to keep everyone going. And the little clips of unique form through the logs are great.
Bought some land in East Tennessee last December. 40 acres. Getting ready to retire from my Fire Dept and Paramedic career in Louisiana. Built my last home with an LT 15 Go. I have an LT 35 hydraulic on order. Should be ready mid January. You inspire me dude! Keep the edu-tainment coming brother!! Can’t wait to make the big move and start on all these Woodmizer projects on the books!!!!!👍🏻👍🏻
Good deal
What an awesome comment Danny. Best of luck from Southern Ohio.
Danny, I loved what you had to say. I wish you every success. Peace.
I live in Louisiana and wanna buy one of these to cut my own lumber but in saint tammany parish code says you can’t cut your own lumber need stupid certificates on structural lumber how did you get around this did they actually check or they don’t care in your parish because my uncle own a tree cutting company in Lacombe so I was gonna just buy logs from him
Man in Jackson Parish I had to use manufactured trusses, but all the framing lumber I was able to cut myself, along with any cedar, cypress, and Oak for wall boards and trim.
A little off topic but you have some of the best looking mousers on YT. LOL
Watching you cut is the best ASMR almost theraputic.
thanks
Thanks!
Thanks appreciate that
When I was a kid we'd make sassafras tea on camping trips. We used the roots so it never occured to me that the wood would smell like rootbeer too! The things I learn from you! 😃 (Simon is very handsome.)
Same here! Sassafras tea! Me and my friends would find roots in the banks of ditches while hunting pop bottles! LOL! Like you, I never thought about the wood smelling like that.
Good looking grapple
👍
Wow, I live on the MS Gulf coast and I never knew sassafras trees grew so big. Can’t wait to see the lumber. Still remember my grandma making sassafras tea for us as kids.
I Know many love the Yada yada the first half of the videos, but since I am more interested in just yada I fast forward to the point you are actually cutting the wood. I love wood working and love to see the great wood you mill. If only I could get some of the pieces you cut off to turn. Anyway, not complaining just describing another reason to watch your videos. Plus the scenic views you share are wonderful.
Should have said not interested in the yada, yada. Love the rest of it so keep up the great work.
Maybe I should add, I am an 80 year old disabled Vet recovering from bladder cancer surgery a year ago and now that the temps are in the 70's and 80's here in Arizona I was finally able to get into my shop last week and make sawdust.
So I really love any videos that are relative to wood. Especially turning and milling. You are so blessed to have this in your life. Thank you for sharing.
Love that sassafras. Took nice sized log off the farm years ago had it sawn and kept it in the corner of the shop for 20 years. When I retired built a new house and the first thing I made was my front door from the sassafras. Beautiful wood, works very nicely, golden brown.
Nathan I really enjoy your channel. Right now those drone shots are showing us all the spectacular colors on the trees. Thank you for sharing them
Thanks 👍
My dad was a joiner. I’d go to the wood yard. OMG you can’t beat the smell of cut wood. It always reminds me of dad. I have is tool boxes he made as as apprentice. They still smell of Dad. 💖🙏🇬🇧
Indeed 👍👍👍👍
Hard to describe the joy I get out of watching your videos Sir. A craftsman with his tools is a rare sight these days, thank you.
Thanks buddy
We had a 26 inch sassafrass in our front yard at the farm. It got struck by lightning, and just splintered that entire tree into kindling. Must have been a lot of moisture in the tree. It was exploded. Usually lightning will track down the outside of a tree, following the sap wood. This one tracked down the center of the tree. Even the stump was split and charred.
Another interesting thing about sassafras is that when you crush the green leaves they smell like lime juice. Learned that from my Boy Scout days some 60 years ago.
Thank you for caring for Simon.
Thanks for watching
Have you ever thought about doing a wood identification book (or video series)? I can't find a lot reliable information out there, and you have a wealth of knowledge. As a hobby woodworker, people give lumber sometimes. I can't always tell what it is.
I wish I could smell those logs your cutting. Walnut is my favorite wood.
Nice disco spin by the operator to try and get those twigs to fall off :-)
Lol yes
It appears he has several hours running the picker
What an beautiful country.
I have some good sized Sassafras, the thing is finding any demand for it. Traditional loggers won't even look at it. Tulip, Walnut, Cherry, Oak and maybe some Hickory and Beech is all they care for. Sassafras, Bass Wood, Sycamore, Box Elder, Hackberry, Osage, Mulberry are just trash trees like Cottonwood and Aspen. I like your videos because you are willing to look at woods that the big commercial operators do not believe there is a market for!
Somebody’s trash is always some one else’s Gold. The trash wood you describe had the most. Character
@@charlesscott4513 most of those species are liked by knife makers
As someone who builds electric guitars, I can tell you that in the luthier community sassafras is being looked at as an alternative to swamp ash. Since it has similar strong grain patterns and apparently ash is becoming commercially scarcer due to the ash borrers, you might be able to find some buyers that way.
I wonder about mulberry. What color and grain. Many knot inclusions
I think you live in paradise.
Thanks for watching
I put anchorseal in a spray bottle. If you set it right and squeeze the trigger hard you'll be able to just spray it on quick and easy. Way faster and no brushing. I have zep spray bottles that work and I bet if you cut it with water It'l do even better.
Singer in last video was Bo the drifter, The old dirt road, was the song. Love me some Out of the woods.
👍👍👍
Nice to see a Man who is doing well, by his craft , his family and all of the above...I really enjoy seeing all of the logs that you plank out..As a carpenter, seeing of a beautiful piece of hardwood is a joy to me, and makes me want to build something amazing. My best for you and yours. Jim
Thanks buddy
Simon is a snowshoe Siamese. They are the most dog like cat You will ever meet. They will usually find one human to bond closely with and follow them everywhere
Thanks for watching
As an Englishman , When I first visited USA in 1985 I was eager to try "Root Beer" something not readily available in UK , but mentioned frequently in American Movies and TV. I was amazed to find the smell reminiscent of a cut ointment we know as "Germoline" . Needless say the fascination was a short-lived one . One sip was enough to satisfy and end that curiosity .
An acquired taste for sure.
You have to try the right root beer. They're not all the same. Hires Root Beer is nasty tasting to me but my aunty loved it. I loved A & W Root Beer, it's the only one I've ever liked.
First time viewer. I really appreciate your explanations and quality workmanship.
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Can’t get over the change in your shop from when you first started making it.
The views of the mtn are wonderful. I sure miss being there, especially in the Fall. Keep it up!!
Thanks for watching
Oh man, sassafras not only used for root beer back in the day!
Simon, jus something about those colors, are awesome!!! They look kool, with black and white tips, as well!!!
Thanks for watching
With just those four cuts to square the log, I could make furniture, maybe a child's chair and sitting table. I built my own table saw for ripping.
Thanks for watching
Nathan, I sure enjoy everything on your channel. Thank you for what you do and how you do it. I'd like to recommend that when you talk about picking up Bruno, change one word. Instead of saying you have to pick him up from school, say you GET to pick him up. The change will be a subtle one for both of you. ( Words from a father of 6 that learned that one the hard way! )
The words of a father mean much, Nathan. Bruno will have a greater self esteem because dad's words put value on time invested (not spent) with him. This is especially important when Dad is in heaven & can't be heard any longer.
Dave, from the videos it's clear that Nathan has both a great relationship with Bruno and that the love and bond between them is very strong. I didn't mean to imply the contrary. I was simply encouraging Nathan to leave a video legacy of that very thing. Thank you for challenging me to clarify!
Dave, as Jim said, thank you for the opportunity to clarify my comment, too.
When I was a child, my father made a choice to change the words he used over my siblings and me. It was a tremendously big deal for each of us in our own way. Who we are today has to do with his choice of making each of us valued, an investment of him into us if you will, simply by the words he spoke over and about us.
Nathan continues to demonstrate being an excellent father. I was simply sharing from a child's perspective the truth in what Jim shared from a father's point of view.
My mistake was not sharing with clarity.
@@jimclasquin yes, it definitely does! I had a great childhood and a successful life so far. I have 3 brothers and if one did something wrong we all got a whipping together. That instilled in us a strong character and it allowed us to expect the people around us to have a good character. Basically it made everyone of us aware that the decisions of people around you can have grear consequences. All 4 of us are very successful now because of that. Great father but he demanded the very best from you.
Nathan..I really enjoy your channel especially with the sawmill operation. Especially all the different types of wood that you saw. Eastern Tennessee is beautiful all year long. Keep up the great work and enjoy every video.
Thank you very much!
Great content, proud to be a viewer 🚜🚜🗽🗽
Thanks buddy
A year and a half ago I bought a new Kioti 5310se, I love it BTW, and I bought a new grapple & regular forks also. I used the grapple for about 2 weeks then took it off, put on the forks and have not used it since. The grapple works nice to pick up one log at a time but I much prefer picking up 3-4 logs at a time. It takes to long to unload trailer loads of logs with the grapple and we get 3-4 loads a week.
Thanks for sharing with us Nathan, that was great looking boards you milled. I could almost smell the Sassafras Roots being boiled for the tea. Brought back some memories from years gone by. Fred.🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻✋🏻✋🏻
You bet
Your opening shots of the surrounding area are gorgeous. I enjoy your videos.
Thanks for watching
Finished my day with another of your great vids. Thanks Nathan.
Glad to hear it
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I fight PTSD and your videos help to keep me calm and functional. Part of my therapy. Thanks so much for the content.
Going by the colours of the trees in your 'drone opening', here in Australia we would say the time of year is Autumn. When the trees take on their orange & yellow tones, what do you call your season in Tennessee? Glad you found the logs you have been searching for, they look pretty good to me, I hope they meet your expectations. Nice explanation Nathan of the best way to saw a 'banana log' to get the best timber from it. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
That dump trailer is a huge improvement over a flat bed and I like the half sides. Have seen more around lately. We have the big version and sometimes it’s just… too much.
When I replace my grapple, that one of yours is definitely on the short list. Very sturdy and appears good design for log picking compared to mine. Love to see all the positive growth for you. You do inspire so many of us!
Thanks for watching
Anchorseal is a liquid wax based polymer. I can confirm its the best stuff money can buy! I put 5 coats on a 18ft 34in Pecan log and have like 3% checking and its been cut for 8 months.
Your knowledge is so very helpful brother
Glad to hear that
Hello from New Jersey. Stay well and be safe.
Thank you, I will
Another beautiful log.
Keep them coming.
Take care.
Thanks
Hey, did you buy all your equipment yesterday? Looks like you are going to retire in style. Good on you.
Btw thanks for the video.
Think I made a misstake on who's retiring.
Your Mizers keep getting better. No wonder they look so new. Good on you.
Great example/explanation on how to get the most yield out of an irregular log!
Thanks buddy
Thanks buddy
Trees look nice with the leaves turning. The new truck looks tough. I like the new grapple too. Looks good.
Thanks buddy
Ahh sassafras! I was trying to guess what it was before you said it, but didn't come up with that. We don't have it up around my parts.
Thanks for watching
Great blue grass.
Here’s a suggestion. When you Anchorseal the ends instead of using a brush try a mini roller gonna save you a tun of time overall. Mini or weenie roller. You are great to watch.
Yes, I have been watching you for a long time, and I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy watching you saw up the logs, And I especially like the way you tell about the log and how you are going to saw it up, and even the way it smells, Let us know which ones smell like Jack Daniels, I want one of those boards to just Nail up on my wall. Great show you put on,
Simon is a beautiful snow shoe.
Thanks for watching
You can brag on those blades all you want but they would be nothing without that awesome Wood-Mizer.
agreed,
Gorgeous as always.
I've started going through your backlog again and I'm realizing there are very few shots of you at the controls of your mills (if there are any). With your current camera/mount/tripod inventory, would some such camera angles or over-the-shoulder views be possible? Seeing what you're doing is informative and engaging as all get out, but seeing the Man/Myth/Legend at work would be an eye opener for sure. [If not, oh well, it'll still be the usual 5/5 star content.]
ill try that
Awesome drone shots. That new toy...i mean tool for the tracker reminds me of a giant crab... Lol...have a great weekend
Thanks buddy
Great video sir! I had stopped watching because the content was lacking...I come back and you have microphones, multiple camera angles, cool edits, and the whole experience is on another level!!
it's about time you got back over here, pull up a chair,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 thank you sir, notification bell is on. i'm a sucker for figured wood and quarter sawn hardwood myself, :)
Two quick questions… are you happy with you new mill and do you foresee a need for a higher production machine? Is you tractor still serving you well? (Ok, three questions)
Always good. Only thing missing was pooring water over one of the slabs for the viewer to go "sweet!" lol. Thanks for yet another enjoyable video.
Next time!
Ok... The fall colors of the trees in the opening scene are amazing. Well played sir!!
Thanks 👍👍
liked you saying smelled like root beer. Enjoyed sasfrass as a kid
Thanks
Love maple as cabinet wood
Out of all the different types of wood I've worked with over the years, sassafras has got to be the best smelling of all.
Agreed
Thats a nice friggin mill man!
ty
Nice work Nathan👍
Thanks buddy
Greetings from RB, Nova Scotia., Happy New Year.
Nova Scotia,
We had a sassafras tree in the front yard at the farm. It was about 28 inches thick. It was about 24 feet to the first limb. A doggone wind storm came and twisted that tree to splinters. All the way up. Not even a 3 ft. log left.
Great video homie you have real talent
I appreciate that
That's funny, I have wanted a mill for a couple years now and today I just finished pushing out and piling up about 30 Sassafras into a burn pile. A few of them would have been real nice logs, such is life.
Pretty lumber Nathan have a day love from TEXAS
Thanks for watching
Starting to look like a pro on that thing brother.
Trying
Amazing!! Cant wait to see the sas cut up. Ordered 10 blades same as what you use and I tell you Joe was a pleasure to talk to and deal with. Should have my blades here in no time vs 12 week delay lol. Customer service if nothing else will keep me going back to Joe for sure. Also he had nothing but good things to say about you Nathan :)
That's a heavy looking grapple
Weighs less than 400lbs
Those are some big Sassafras logs. I'm looking forward to the day you open those up.
next video
I have some small sassafras trees here and there on my land, and I dig a root once in a while and make sassafras tea...TASTY!
Woodmizer carries the Turbo 7 silvertip blades.
Love that cut finish.
Sassafrass my absolute favourite timber I use a to of it on knife handles particularly spalted sassafras. I love the smell when its cut
Root bear for everyone! Great video Nathan, thumbs up.
PS From Blackburn. I LOVE NICE WOOD. 💖🇬🇧🙏💕🇬🇧

You live in a lovely 😊 area Love. Not like that, in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. That’s for sure. 🇬🇧🙏💕🙏💖🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧
It really is!
Wow, insanely beautiful intro! 😎
Glad you like it!
Great video, RB, Nova Scotia.

Nice looking Maple! Looking forward to seeing that sassafras, great video!
Thanks
I have sassafras going all over my property. We’ve been making tea with it. It’s supposed to be good for something. Not sure what..
i dont think ive ever seen sassafras logs that big, sure would make some beautiful furniture may have to swing by the sawmill and see if there is any left.
I'd love to go to work at that log yard every day - pretty area!
Thanks for watching
I had a cat that looked like that Tom cat all but his name was Semore because he was crosseyed
Nice grappler. Looks strong. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching
that sass' will make beautifull lumber i have done alot of it and have two bed rooms all trimed out with it
Holy moly. That's the biggest sassafras I've ever seen!
Hi glad to see your video on a boring day. That is some beautiful maple last year I was getting firewood for a friend cutting down dead Maples and I discovered lots of birdeye in the rounds I really want to get a mill
thanks for watching
Sassafras makes some of the most beautiful lumber. Great drone shots!!!!
Thanks 👍👍👍
Cuts like a hot knife through butter.
This is so funny, I have a all manual 32" mill, this looks more like driving than sawing haha. Beautiful machine.
Is that spalting at about the 15:08 mark? That looked like a sword. It's like you say. You never know what you're going to find when you open up a log. Love how you educate folks while doing what you love.
Good morning from RB, Nova Scotia.
Hello there
