  • in spite of all the technological advances, locomotives are still one of the backbones of industry. remove trains from the picture, and this economy suffers inexorably.

One of my childhood memories is of hearing these trains rumble by and blow their VERY loud whistles. My great-grandparents' house was VERY close to the tracks...in Fitzgerald, GA...where my great-grandfather and great uncle were engineers for Atlantic Coastline. It's interesting to look at old maps and the locations of the many DEPOTS...and the small towns where the trains stopped....many are "ghost towns" now.

Congratulations to old gal 844. Good for you girl. Show those dirty nasty rotten diesels that you ain't giving in to their modern ways. Wow....I'm 22 years old and saying this to a steam locomotive that I will never see....GOD I wish I could see another preserved steam locomotive again and take a ride on it...the one in rusk Texas has got me yearning to see more steam locomotives but I am so broke I can't.....😭😭

9:02 is it just me, but does anyone else think there is something plaintive, a sad, lonely wail of an old giant in the sound of the American steam whistle?

Funny, how watching this in 2023, when this video was made in the 90's, 4014 was still rusting away in southern California. No one knew she'd be brought back to life.

The 4-8-4 was definitely the pinnacle of passenger steam power, the N&W, NYC and later C&O models are great examples. 75"-80" drivers, but meanwhile on the N&W, their passenger Js have 70" drivers, yet made excellent use of them, and the C&O, either 72" or 74", also made superb use of them.

Steam engines are just so much more charming than Diesels. Some British diesels are still beautiful, really, but the ones we're making in America today... no beauty, no romance, no grandeur. They're just cold, soulless thingamajigs that have no character to them and aren't exciting in any way.

for the most part at the beginning of this segment it is mostly about #3985 but The Challenger is not the only Steam UP owns at 2:03 here she comes The Queen of The Rails, The Star of The Train World, and yes The Living Legend herself #844 doing what she does best visiting all of us railfans. but #844 has an amazing story to tell at 3:58 in November of 96 when #844 was coming home from Railfest she was fallowing a slow moving freight into Cheyenne half way down Archer the lead engine stalled and came to a stop at the choke point of the track in to Cheyenne. Cheyenne dispatch got on the radio and called #844 to action then she came behind the train and pushed it into Cheyenne. #844 saved the day up there on Archer in 96.

An amusing coincidence in model/unit numbers here --- the only continuously-operating "4-8-4" in the world is unit #844 --- the same numbers as its model :)
