One minor part of the steam locomotive story is the cog railway. It was good for mountainous steep grades that regular trains could not handle. I know of only two cog railroads in the U.S: Mt. Washington, New Hampshire and Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A cog strip rail is located halfway between the track rails. The loco would have a corresponding gear that meshed on the strip. The gear would turn along with the wheels when the train was moving. Powerful but extremely slow in speed.
