The soundtrack is one of the best ever. The same guy made the soundtrack to IXION and it's worth listening to on its own. Nailed the space exploration vibe perfectly.
This is the kind of game that is hard to master but once you make it you can really swipe a map in a single turn and i love it Plus the OST is pure fire
I've just recently started to get into the 40k games man. I've been stuck on Inquisitor for a couple weeks now and really loving it! So, I'm happy to see/hear about other games in the universe. Thanks for the video my man
My favourite character build in Mechanicus is the dual pistol build. There is a pistol that ignore armor but only do 1-2 dmg. But in two skilltrees there is a skill that adds 2 dmg, so you get 4 extra whenever you do your special shot and pistols get those special shots often. This means you get 2 weapons that instead of doing 1-2 gets 5-6dmg EACH and ignores all armor.
The weapon is a Gauss-Gamma Pistol, which does indeed deal true damage (rather than physical or energy based damage). Firing it costs 2 Cognition Points, but the skill "Cognitive Freedom" can alleviate that. The added damage you mention comes from the skill "Wrathful Spirit" skills in both the Explorator and Dominus skill trees; these skills stack, and apply the aforementioned bonuses when a weapon has an activated machine spirit. To get more value from this build, max out the Dominus tree to get bonus stats for only wielding ranged weapons. To make up for the lack of a melee weapon, equip the priest with the Infestus Mechadendrite; it gives a melee strike that pushes a single target back by one tile, which is useful for keeping melee Necrons from tying up the priest's ranged weapons.
@@kylenguyen7371 The pistol I talk about are the simple "Gamma Pistol" that cost no cognition points to fire. This means that the Tech Priest is not relying on cognition points to function. Since you invest in the Explorator tree to one of the "angered spirits" perks you have freedom of movement and can therefor leave melee without penelty. You can then go two paths: Either go for a jack of all trades and equip a melee weapon to be able to end your turn in melee to get attacks of oppertunity and extra cognition points with a "Cognition Mechadentrite" OR go down the Dominus tree and focus solidly on ranged as you suggested. I have taken the jack of all trades since he has so much armour that he usualy acts as frontline distraction and other party members acts long ranged instead.
@@Johannicus that's right! I forgot about that. I would definitely continue to recommend the Gauss-Gamma Pistol later on, though. Cognitive Freedom making that weapon CogPoint free every other turn is well worth the improved damage output. Was my Dominus priest's primary weapon through much of my first run's missions.
Awesome! I was confident that you would like it. I also think it is the perfect entry point for Warhammer 40k... unless you like first person shooters. Especially with the DLC... so many build options for your tech priests. And, enjoyed the mechanic of needing to balance exploring more to get more rewards versus increase of awakening so you had to be strategic with it.
Hey @MortismalGaming ! Since you haven’t fully gotten through the game yet, I thought id chime in and HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the “enhanced exploration” option in the settings - it will give you hints for what effects the choices you make will have - ie you’ll see an icon for a new weapon/blackstone/awakening/initiative. For some reason or another, it’s set OFF by default but checking it on doesn’t interfere with trophies. ALSO - for first timers that have figured out the combat but are struggling to lvl up all your priests: increasing the number of extra fights per mission and the extra enemy units modifier doesn’t interfere with trophies either but will give you more chances to clear out trash mobs - thus awarding more blackstone!
Looking forward to the review as I am def eyeing this one. Glad 40K is starting to have more quality titles behind it. I was a huge Dawn of War fan and ever since those games it's been a pretty rough ride for the franchise (Kill Team and Space Marine aside) until very recently. Mechanicus is on sale on the PSN for $13.99 until 1/19. PoE2 is also on sale on PSN, $14.99 and $11.99 if you have PS+ until 1/7.
Missed this game at launch and picked it up on a deep sale earlier this year. Great fun, loved the moment where after you are hearing your tech priests talking to each other in code, you suddenly have a Necron talk to you in english and it's pretty jarring. Music is also awesome.
I miss the old Necrons when they didn't talk or it was very rare. Felt more menacing, also there was less emphasis on pseudo-Egyptian themes and names (now they sort of overlap with Eldar and Thousand Sons in style).
The main thing with the mechanics (pardon the pun!) to realise is that there aren't any 'to hit' chances - every attack lands. It then just depends on range/cover/defense/dmg type vs mitigation/etc as to how much damage is done. Quite a different approach to most rpgs. Awesome TRPG aimed more at non-hardcore TB fans. Short but sweet describes it perfectly!
I feel like it’s way less involved, but more enjoyable than the newer trpg with the grey knights. I am huge fan of both the mechanicus and the necrons however, so I may be biased.
I've played a good number of the 40k Turn based games, Mechanicus is up there with one of my favourites so far =) Just something cathartic about developing your characters and not being Beefy Space Marines for a change! Tech Priests are cool.
@@luigibagigi7725 Not a problem. Rites of War, Battlesector and the original Chaos Gate come to mind, there was even an old RPG on the DS/PSP called squad command which had great potential. I'm pretty keen to play Daemon Hunters at some point in the future =)
One thing I really like about this game, is that it doesn't withold best gear till end of the game like most games of this type do. However there is also one VERY important diffrence. It's one thing to have big guns, and one entierly another to have enough cognition to use them every turn. Also, soundtrack is simply fenomenal. It's not flawless game ofc, I wish there would be better balance between skill groups, troop upgrades beeing offered more often, more variety for enemy units, and - especialy ! - lychguards not beeing such a utter bullshit to fight.
A thing that is not obvious is that you can pursue different quests, depending on the missions you undertake, and those may influence the narrative at the end of the game.
I recently got this game from the epic store for free and have been curious about it. As it will be my first ttrpg I am glad to hear it is more newcomer friendly.
It has a bit if a learning curve, so the first 5 or 6 missions can be really tough. Dont give up though, it gets really good when you get the hang of it

At the time this video was posted, it is on sale for the next 12 days for $10. Even if you aren't sure how you will feel about Warhammer, $10 is worth dipping your toes into the world.
The problem with this game is that the early game is the absolute hardest part of the game, then you start leveling and suddenly you haven't taken damage in 5 missions.
Yeah. A lot of turn based tactical games suffer from the reverse difficulty curve but this game has the biggest drop off in the endgame. All the difficulty just falls off a cliff when you can clear whole rooms of high level enemies in one turn without breaking a sweat and even bosses don't offer any challenge at that point.
yeah that last point is what made me drop the game. i got crushed in the beginning and rly had no idea why are what i was doing (despite the tutorial). i have to admit i am generally rly terrible at TRPGs and only got this since i'm into the 40k lore. maybe i'll jump back in after some point but am preoccupied with too many other games atm. but have to give kudos regarding the atmosphere and soundtrack...some of the best i've ever experienced and so fitting for the scenario
My issue having bought the game on PC release day, is that the animations for a move took AGES, and repeated over and again. Really slowing the game down to a crawl. They were also none shippable. Has that been fixed or any changes there?
There are tons of average WH40k games. Mechanicus is one of the better ones, but if you want to check the best one, it's WH40k: Dawn of War and all it's expansions, epecially Dark Crusade. It's an RTS but even as a fan of cRPGs I would say it's the best out there of all WH40k games.
Interestinf obaervation about this game - notice that as your priests talk to each other via noospheric babbling Necrons do talk in standard english. I know its technically made for cost reduction but it also almost makes your own side less human than robotic foes. :)
good warhammer games are few and far between... and they have been making them since the 90s... imagine how horrible their movies will be... even DnD movies still looks like crap today
Idk about "few and far". Warhammer, be it WFB or 40K have plenty of good and great games over the years, from Final Libaration in 1998 to recent Total War Warhamer III in 2022. Plenty of terrible too, yes, but I belive ratio of good-to-bad games isn't as awful, as people think.
The soundtrack is one of the best ever. The same guy made the soundtrack to IXION and it's worth listening to on its own. Nailed the space exploration vibe perfectly.
Yes! One of the greatest of all time. Love it.
The only game OST that I not only own but listen too. It is wicked cool.

The soundtrack is so perfect for this game. Unbelievably immersive to the setting.
Special mention goes to the atmospheric soundscape. Sound effects, "speech" and of course the music. Beautiful and all in character.
FROM THE MOMENT I UNDERSTOOD THE WEAKNESS OF MY FLESH
IT DISGUSTED ME
Really good game, with a great aesthetic, sound track, audioscape, and some game design/balance issues. Was my fav 40k game for a long time.
This one has a banger soundtrack
the only title drop i watch every time i load the game
The OST is amazing
Great game! Always fun to fight the Necrons🙂 a little too easy after a while, but you do feel the poker of the Mechanicus! Good show sir!
I have this game on Switch. It usually goes on sale for a very good price. Honestly, it's one of the best modern Tactical RPGs.
Thank you for your initial impressions my friend, as someone new to the "Warhammer 40K" universe I'm eager to learn about all their games.

"NOOSPHERE" INTENSIFIES
Yeah, the power curve in that game is great once you get to late game tech you're basically unstoppable.
While cool to be OP in the endgame for a bit it gets boring after a while and I wish at least the final boss fight would have some challenge.

Yeah, there's a lot to like here. Definitely one of the best modern Warhammer games.
Great game, superb soundtrack. Has some balance issues - you will easily destroy all end game bosses in a lot of cases.
Game can be unfair at early game sometime and then just get easy near the end. Still a really solid warhammer game.
It was a pretty good game, I prefer new chaos gate though as greyknights are awesome :D
