A big thing to point out is the importance of doing these drills in a full length cage. Seeing the ball flight direction and spin will be instant feedback on how good the bat path is.
My Son is a big LSU fan and I took him to the South Carolina vs LSU series last year in Columbia, SC. He met Tommy Tanks, Dylan Crews, Trey Morgan and Paul Skenes. He plays 3rd base and is a big Tommy Tanks fan. After he found your previous video about Tommy's hitting routine, he adopted the same routine. He had a breakout year. He is in the 7th grade and plays for his school's Freshman team. He hit .545 with 1 strikeout. Last week he played in the first tournament with his 12U Summer team, and he hit 2 Home Runs. He has always been a solid hitter, but he really took off after the Tommy Tanks videos.
Awesome drills! Love you alls stuff. I have a daughter going to a P5 for softball and couldn't agree more with the bad barrel dump. Also want to send her to you guys for a week.
Very impressed. Been watching and digesting as much as possible as coaching 12U including summer All Stars. My son is a talented hitter but can hit with so much more power. I was a pretty good pitcher back in the day. Threw 88mph at 16. Agree 110%. Cranking it up and seriously, seriously challenging batters can have immense benefits during the game. I throw my son about 65-70 mph including sliders and pretty decent breaking balls. I can certainly strike out my son if I am throwing to do it. But when I just throw 70 mpg fastballs? Kids is on top of them. Kid has no fear of them. And kid is an amazing hitter in game times. Struck out twice during regular season and that was early. Proof in the pudding. Problem is, soon I wont be able to throw hard enough. Gonna have to teach my old bones to get better with the off speed stuff! Subscribed and gonna watch many more.
Just worked this high & tight T drill, seems to help almost instantly, college hitter said felt quicker to the ball on reg zone pitches …interesting feedback
I think everyone has a power v, it's just where in your swing your power v is, sometime earlier and sometime times later depending on where the pitch is and where in the swing a guy makes contact
I’m curious about the high speed drill ? Seems like you could be very susceptible to off speed stuff. Seems like you need to add in some off speed stuff so you’re not so out in front in a game. I do understand the concept. Love the videos! Keep it up!
All good hitters are susceptible to off speed stuff. Bad hitters are susceptible to the fastball. The fastball is thrown more than 60% of all pitches thrown. All hitters are guaranteed fastballs. Choose which you want to be.
@@tinbus149"dumping the barrel" in the way that people don't want to see is more nuanced than that. There's nothing wrong with bringing the elbow to the ribs if it is done as part of the swing. Most of the greatest hitters do that. The problem is when people dump the barrel and lean back hard as their loaded position before they actually swing. You can often diagnose this, especially, if a batter drops their hands to their waist. Then, all they can do is either A: try to pull the bat back up at a problematic vertical angle like you are referring to or B: push the bat forward for a weak swing. The only way you're not gonna tuck your elbow is if you cast your arms badly.
What kinda pitching machine do you use? I want to buy the bata 2 for my son his a freshman in highschool on the varsity team but I want the machine to grow with him for the next 3 years
If you do the high tee drill it will take no time at all to realize if your doing something wrong. It’ll be super uncomfortable and hard to do the drill if you dump your barrel
What people are teaching that you're calling "dumping the barrel" is actually turning the barrel. It just looks different depending on tee height placement. Your hitter in this video is clearly turning the barrel. He's just not driving his rear shoulder under here because, obviously, he doesn't need to lean over as much to hit a high tee. In a game, you would have a more crouched/athletic loaded stance, and you would straighten out to hit a high in the zone pitch. In either case, the barrel is going to turn and work from behind the zone up and through. Saying that someone who turns the barrel can't hit a high pitch would be like me saying your guy can't hit a low outside pitch. Either person should be able to hit both if they're turning the barrel. It's just a matter of tilting their torso correctly for the pitch. Perhaps, the guys that are hitting off a low tee all the time just aren't practicing off of a high tee ever, so they only have one generic swing with little adjustability. I mean... if a guy only ever practiced on a high tee, they'd have the opposite problem. I do tee placement drills both ways. In either case, the rear shoulder/rear hip drives the swing with the wrists turning the barrel on plane palm up/down
Most of them do but they deny it. Basically they don’t want you doing what’s giving them success. They rather you continue the old way that wasn’t working!
You do have to understand, the barrel will always work rearward first with a good swing mechanic. He’s just focusing on a tight turn vs casting where the barrel has huge separation from the shoulder. Remember guys, this is a quick video and lots of hitting stuff is semantics. Try to see the spirit of the drill vs focusing on the precise way he describes it. These drills make good sense. We call the power V “half or 3/4 swings” to show direction and extension. Always do High T, but will incorporate the tight 1 ball in - high T and max velocity machine as well. It’s just like adding a couple new excercises to your workout to train a new muscle group.
@@mattwalker138 - You summed it up right here "the barrel will always work rearward first." He made it sound like that was a bad thing, regardless of semantics or the length of the video. Calling a reward launch a barrel dump is just wrong...sorry.
@@daveb8795the revelation here is that he's basically admitting that he could never hit a low outside pitch well by "turning the barrel" when he said "it never worked for me". Because, if he's working the barrel rearward (like he should and clearly is in this demonstration), then to hit a low outside pitch, he's gonna have to bend over and tilt the shoulders and drive the rear shoulder under with his turn. To say that a person should never do this, means they're only ever gonna turn the barrel and hit well on a high in the zone pitch and they're gonna push the barrel and slap swing at anything low. The real magic is when you actually do both what he's saying for the high pitch and also do what he's saying you shouldn't do for the low pitch. The barrel turns rearward and the shoulders stay closer to level for high pitches. For low pitches, it's the same, but with more bend at the waist so the rear shoulder works under. It's only "dumping" if the elbow/ barrel/hands are dropping as part of the batters loaded position prior to swinging. Then, they will pull the hands up with a goofy looking more vertical bat path or will try to push the barrel through the zone.
FWIW: teaching a mechanism that "stops" at contact is a really bad idea. Maybe good for hitters that already know what they're doing (and understand follow-through) but really bad for a hitter that literally does this in a game (they hear/feel the contact, and then let the ball "bounce" off the bat rather than pushing it with power).
😂 the onky way he getd to that pitchbid dump the barrel rearward as his 1st initial move...lmfao good advice but its all the same just difficult fir some to see through the different verbage and real vs feel for each individual
Ugh! The V comes at contact with hands in fairly tight to the body, elbows at 30-45 degree angles, you're showing hitters with extended arms after contact, thats the follow through. Anytime anyone mentions extension to a young hitter they think they hit with their arms extended; thats death to a hitter. Also, why anyone would teach a drill that stops the bat is beyond me. You want acceleration through the duration of the swing. That "drill" imparts deceleration. That's one of the culprits (among others) that give so many softball girls a funky two part swing with deceleration at contact. High tee? Sure, gotta be able to hit all quadrants of the zone. Hi velo? Absolutely, as long as it doesn't cause a change in mechanics to just but the bat on the ball rather than swing the bat.
I actually love the power V or finishing as hard as you can as soon as you make contact to feel our decelerator muscles working. While this certainly isn’t the first drill I teach and is something I get to after we understand the swing better, it’s a great drill for immediate feedback in my opinion.
Just a note: Substitute the word “inability” for your use of “unability”. Then you won’t sound so uneducated. Same goes for the beard. Trim it nice and short. Plus do you have to use foul language in your videos? It diminishes you. Don’t look and talk like a hayseed. Your info is great. Just class up your act.

This guy is great. He isnt acting like his way is the only way to hit and gives good examples of how these drills come into olay in the game.
A big thing to point out is the importance of doing these drills in a full length cage. Seeing the ball flight direction and spin will be instant feedback on how good the bat path is.

Could you elaborate on the “dump the barrel” term you used?
Guys who take their back elbow to the rib immediately dropping the barrel low enough that their only path through the zone is on an upward path.
