    This speaks to my heart. I've been saying that when I get to start woodturning I want to make a simple espresso cup. Until then I will cherish this

      I watched one too many of these videos and now spend a few hours every night on my lathe making bowls, rings, pens etc.... Amazing how relaxing and satisfying it is to ACTUALLY make things instead of buying them!!! I'd strongly recommend it :)

    I really like what you did here. It came out looking really nice. I think it would be cool if you re did this project but used a resin wood hybrid blank. maybe 2 pieces of wood with a layer of resin sandwiched between.

    what sealant did u use for the inside and outside that is food safe and doesn't swallow using hot beverage?

    Beautiful piece. One question though. Did I understand it correctly you can use a cup like that for coffee ect? Doesn´t tung oil give off taste?
    Love your videos, they have tought me a lot. Only problem is that it´s hard to get good wood for turning here i Iceland.

    question using the tongue oil and then putting coffee in it do you have to reapply due to the heat of the coffee breaking down the oil? beautiful work

    Nice demo n beautiful end product 👍! Well, I would like to know that if wooden bowls and cups are suitable for serving searing hot items like soups, ramen, tea etc. Or are there any chances of developing cracks? Pls suggest..

      Thanks. It depends on stability of the wood. There are species capable to move less with humity changes.

    I notice plates and bowls are turned on the cross grain. Would that be a better way to do a cup? Because would have also done it this way, to hollow out through the end grain.

      It depends on which wood species you're going to turn. I'm not a pro turner so I just experiment.

      +Mike Barratt That finish will protect the wood but you'll need to refresh it from time to time.

      There's no very durable natural finish but since that a going to be in touch with food or drink I won't use any other finish. Time to time need to be refinished.

    I take it tung oil is going to hive it enough protection to actually use it as a cup and prevent liquids seeping in to the wood?

      Once it's cured (no residue of drying agents left) it's fully safe. It's same rule for most finishes.

      The wood stain or wood finish, the chemicals could be dangerous if you're not in a ventilated area. You can always use the wood finish outdoors and let it dry then it will be okay.

    Question. Is tung oil food safe? And how long will it last? Will it work with coffee?

      It definitely hold hot brevages. You only need to wait the tung oil for its full cure time (aprox. 2 weeks).

    Did you use Tung on the inside too? Is that safe to drink from once cured?

      I'd use flaxseed oil. Also known as NOT boiled linseed oil. Flaxseed oil is approved as a food additive by the FDA. Flaxseed oil is available from online health food stores. I picked up 5 quart a couple years back for ~$8.

      Cool, I heard/read most finishes are safe once cured.... I can picture that true so long as it isn't alochol or something that can break down the surface.

      Yes it is. Once you notice its losing its properties you can apply it (really easy to do so). Regards.

    Great video, thanks for posting.
    I'm getting my new Axminster lathe and SK100 delivered tomorrow. Quick question - when you reversed your work, and held what was essentially the finished rim of the cup in the jaws, did you protect the workpiece at all? I noticed you had tissue in between the jaws and the piece when oiling, was the tissue there when turning off the base too?
    And where did you get your motif made for the base? That looked cool...

      Of course it can be done without a lathe but the result would not be as perfect (in therms of shape) and I would need to spend more time to get it done. Regards.

    It saddens me greatly we wont be able to use ash for alot of things thanks to the emerald ash borer. That being said turning end grain like that is so satisfiying.

      +Prsty Zq Thank you for your kind comment Prsty! I'm glad you like my work. My lathe is an Axminster AH-1218VS (500W with variomatic), a entry level one. As you can see it performs well for turning small objects like those. I might start turning bowls and other bigger stuff to test it out. Best regards!

      +Daniel Wood Nope, but closely. Before that I only turned small spinning tops, rings and small candle holders. Regards!
