I watched one too many of these videos and now spend a few hours every night on my lathe making bowls, rings, pens etc.... Amazing how relaxing and satisfying it is to ACTUALLY make things instead of buying them!!! I'd strongly recommend it :)

first of all, the video is really great, thank you I also now want to make a glass, but I am a very beginner and there are difficulties That's why I would like to ask what kind of turning knife he used and how is it sharpened? Maybe a Torm code? It would be a great help Thank you very much in advance for your help
Thank you Nelson. Not all the credit is mine. My wife designed my logo. She is quite talented professional graphic designer. Thanks for your feedback. Regards!
I really like what you did here. It came out looking really nice. I think it would be cool if you re did this project but used a resin wood hybrid blank. maybe 2 pieces of wood with a layer of resin sandwiched between.
Beautiful piece. One question though. Did I understand it correctly you can use a cup like that for coffee ect? Doesn´t tung oil give off taste? Love your videos, they have tought me a lot. Only problem is that it´s hard to get good wood for turning here i Iceland.
@@WoodworkingBarcelona When your end result is that good no further explanation is needed. As I imagine you've noticed, beginners (like myself) are often the most vocal critics while the more knowledgeable folks have learned to temper their words.
Greetings from Bangladesh! Beautiful work indeed. Can u please tell me, can i use almond oil? Coconut oil? Would that work? Or soyabin oil? In here getting tung oil is so hard to find! 😥
Great video, I'm just learning myself.... question: did you attached the top of the cup after doing the inside the same way as you attached the base.... didn't show that on the video....???
Nice demo n beautiful end product 👍! Well, I would like to know that if wooden bowls and cups are suitable for serving searing hot items like soups, ramen, tea etc. Or are there any chances of developing cracks? Pls suggest..
I notice plates and bowls are turned on the cross grain. Would that be a better way to do a cup? Because would have also done it this way, to hollow out through the end grain.
There's no very durable natural finish but since that a going to be in touch with food or drink I won't use any other finish. Time to time need to be refinished.
The wood stain or wood finish, the chemicals could be dangerous if you're not in a ventilated area. You can always use the wood finish outdoors and let it dry then it will be okay.
Gracias compañero! Una vez curado el aceite de tung puedes hacerlo sin problemas. Eso es lo que entendí después de hacer una búsqueda bibliográfica sobre el tema. Saludos!
I'd use flaxseed oil. Also known as NOT boiled linseed oil. Flaxseed oil is approved as a food additive by the FDA. Flaxseed oil is available from online health food stores. I picked up 5 quart a couple years back for ~$8.
Cool, I heard/read most finishes are safe once cured.... I can picture that true so long as it isn't alochol or something that can break down the surface. Thanks man
Hi There, İf u dont mind May I have a bit information about that machines and accesories please. I am glad to comeacross to your great work. wish more n more great works
Hi WWB. Great video, thanks for posting. I'm getting my new Axminster lathe and SK100 delivered tomorrow. Quick question - when you reversed your work, and held what was essentially the finished rim of the cup in the jaws, did you protect the workpiece at all? I noticed you had tissue in between the jaws and the piece when oiling, was the tissue there when turning off the base too? And where did you get your motif made for the base? That looked cool...
John Urquhart Hi John! Yes, I usually protect my workpiece with some paper or cloth at the finishing stage. About the motif question I made it myself. I'll show how in quick tip video soon, I promise that. Regards and enjoy your SK100!
I like the ink transfer with your logo on, I'd like to use the idea on my walking sticks. Do you mind me asked no where they came from. I'm making my first coffee cup ,I'll let you know how it goes😜
Of course it can be done without a lathe but the result would not be as perfect (in therms of shape) and I would need to spend more time to get it done. Regards.
Great project I’m just turning one myself and struggling with my bowl gouge what size is the one you’re using thanks in advance and cheers for the greatxcodeo
It saddens me greatly we wont be able to use ash for alot of things thanks to the emerald ash borer. That being said turning end grain like that is so satisfiying.

what sealant did u use for the inside and outside that is food safe and doesn't swallow using hot beverage?

Nice demo n beautiful end product 👍! Well, I would like to know that if wooden bowls and cups are suitable for serving searing hot items like soups, ramen, tea etc. Or are there any chances of developing cracks? Pls suggest..
Thanks. It depends on stability of the wood. There are species capable to move less with humity changes.
I love this.... Thank you for sharing your talent with us...
Thank you very much!
I notice plates and bowls are turned on the cross grain. Would that be a better way to do a cup? Because would have also done it this way, to hollow out through the end grain.
It depends on which wood species you're going to turn. I'm not a pro turner so I just experiment.
Quick question, did just 3 coats of tung oil make it water/heat proof?? That's awesome!
+Mike Barratt That finish will protect the wood but you'll need to refresh it from time to time.
What’s the best food safe, heat resistant, wood finish >>> coffee cups & soup bowls
There's no very durable natural finish but since that a going to be in touch with food or drink I won't use any other finish. Time to time need to be refinished.
idk what u think but this is rly satisfying
+Hi Myz Thanks for your comment!
Great project. Is tung oil safe for a drinking cup
As far as I know, once it's cured it is food safe
Nice job. Just i have one question, What kind of wood it is?
I take it tung oil is going to hive it enough protection to actually use it as a cup and prevent liquids seeping in to the wood?
pretty nice work! i would like to know if the tung finish is not dangerous for people!
Once it's cured (no residue of drying agents left) it's fully safe. It's same rule for most finishes.
The wood stain or wood finish, the chemicals could be dangerous if you're not in a ventilated area. You can always use the wood finish outdoors and let it dry then it will be okay.
That is so cool..I really want that cup!
+Reichael Chua I'm glad you like it!

Question. Is tung oil food safe? And how long will it last? Will it work with coffee?
It definitely hold hot brevages. You only need to wait the tung oil for its full cure time (aprox. 2 weeks).
Beautiful piece!

Did you use Tung on the inside too? Is that safe to drink from once cured?
I'd use flaxseed oil. Also known as NOT boiled linseed oil. Flaxseed oil is approved as a food additive by the FDA. Flaxseed oil is available from online health food stores. I picked up 5 quart a couple years back for ~$8.
Hehe, worse case you get a little fiber :P Thanks!
