I was a soldier posted to Korea in the 90's. At the time I was there , the Army was closing the last M.A.S.H. hospital. We were at a gunnery range called MPRC. While there , we were visited by David Ogden Steirs , Larry Linville , and another guy whose name I forget (a producer , I think) Larry seemed kind of frail but he was a nice seeming guy and we took pictures with them and they had MRE's with us for lunch. Our Lt. Colonel took them for a ride in his Bradely. It was a memorable day almost 30 years ago.
Linville was right that upon leaving MASH, his character had become one dimensional. There wasn't anything else to do with him, except have him be a punching bag for Hawkeye. As Alda took over the series, it became different.
I didn't know he was in so many shows. He played his part great on M*A*S*H. Thanks for all the info about him. Died too young. I loved M*A*S*H and was sad when any of the original cast left. You're doing a great job.
MASH was never the same after Larry Linville left. It actually began it's decline when McLean Stevenson and Wayne Rogers left, and Linville's leaving just pushed the show further off the cliff.
Couldn’t agree more. The proof in the pudding is in the eating, and the episodes from the first couple seasons with the Trapper John and Henry Blake characters are just so much more entertaining, for me anyways.
The first time I saw a ferret, I suddenly understood why that was Frank Burns’ nickname. Every time I saw him in MASH after that, I got the giggles. Winchester had his moments but I missed Frank.
Like you, I felt the show lost something special when Larry left. I watched the entire run of M*A*S*H, but I'll go out of my way to watch early episodes of M*A*S*H, with Frank. Thanks for the video.
Mr. Linville came into a bookstore I was was working at in college. Just a sweet and super nice man. And you're right, the show just wasn't the same after he left ✌❤
You did an amazing job creating this Video . As usual . In my opinion , MASH can't continue without a few of the really important Characters . And Larry is definitely one of them . I would absolutely Love to see more Videos about more people from MASH . I hope you're doing well and staying safe . 🎸
You know it’s going to have a sad ending when someone leaves a thriving series and the subsequent appearances are on Fantasy Island, Love Boat and Murder She Wrote…
Wow, he was a brilliant man. This video helped me realize what a super job he did w the Frank Burns character. He made the show a success as much as any of the others.
The Love Boat and Fantasy Island were where up and coming stars got their start, or aging former stars ended up on the downside of their careers when they were no longer relevant. Many were sitcom stars from shows in the sixties and seventies who you hadn't heard from in years. I remember seeing some of them and thinking I didn't know he/she was still alive.
I think almost all MASH fans would agree that the early seasons with the original cast were far better than the later ones, though it was still much beloved right up to the end. Also. while they always injected social and political messages, the comedy came first in the early seasons. That wasn't always true in later ones where they often got quite preachy.
Agreed, it was not the same after he left but still a very good show, to this day I was angry I missed the final episode when it aired and it was many years until I was actually able to see it. As alway Steve thank you for creating this content ❤️
I loved Larry Linville on MASH. He was only 60 when he passed? Oh my! Every time someone left MASH, there was always a shift. And things were never the same. I enjoyed it to the end though. 👍
Great channel concept!! Three major changes that I didn’t enjoy were the loss of Henry Blake, Trapper John, and Frank Burns. The loss of their energy was a total game changer!! Every show needs the yin and yang and M*A*S*H lost that loving feeling by losing 3 excellent actors!! I do feel that the writing was excellent throughout the entire show!!
M*A*S*H was still a great show even after Linville left. David Ogden Stiers was also a fine actor and he portrayed Winchester very convincingly. He blended in with the cast very well, alongside Harry Morgan and Mike Farrell. Linville also starred on the short lived Jefferson's spin-off Checkin' In, which starred Marla Gibbs as her character Florence, but was cancelled after only four episodes. Linville was also in the 1985 teen exploitation film "School Spirit". Although he said that he never regretted leaving M*A*S*H, he became the victim of every actor's worst nightmare, which is typecasting. The only roles he had ever received were much the same as his Frank Burns character. He was a very good actor who deserved better roles. Not only that, his fellow castmates on M*A*S*H enjoyed having him around. They said that he was always friendly and had a dry sense of humor. Too bad his true talent was wasted and lost as a result of him being typecast. May he forever RIP.
Linville was a great sport about playing Frank Burns. Don't blame him for leaving though. The show really changed after Alan Alda was made a 'creative consultant'. Still quite good, but not really the same. All four of the prominent characters that left did so for very good reasons. I was a huge fan of the show; in retrospect, I do agree it went on for about 3 seasons too many.
He was a likable actor in any role he played, but I think he was a very special 'character' in MASH which was crucial to the show. I only saw the in German dubbed shows in Germany but once he left...no, it just was not the same. Thanks for covering Larry Linville.
I think MASH went as far as it could with Major Frank Burns. The addition of Charles Emerson Winchester was a good move. I agree with some earlier comments, MASH has too long a run.
I like your Chanel you say it like it is. And you are also very factual and respectful. 👍. Mash lost its magic after Larry left and McLean Stevenson left the show.
He made the best decision at the time. I thought Winchester was a good character foil to bring in and the show was good through the ninth season. I wish they had called it quits then. I had to force myself to watch the final two seasons ❤
Larry was great in that role and I don't think the show was as perfect after he left. I used to get such a kick out of him & Hot Lips and their, er....relationship. Thank you for sharing!
I watch mash every night, I've seen every episode about 20 times ,plus. I think the show had a loss of comedic value when Larry left, he was the third stooge that the show never got back. When Alan started writing and directing the show took on a more social stance for that time in the 1950s,, larry was definitely missed and should have stayed on for 2 more years but all-in-all, it's still my favorite show of all time..and will say maybe the best sitcom ever..
Larry Linville’s character (Frank Burns) had become some what one dimensional. As noted by the changes made when David Ogden Stiers character (Charles Emerson Winchester) came in.
I think Larry had no choice! Once Hot Lips 💋 changed into Margaret, the writing was on the wall, no more Mutt & Jeff!! And by the way, I really am from Fort Wayne, Indiana‼️ RIP Honorary Citizen of Fort Wayne - Larry Linville 🇺🇸🙏
I worked with Larry Linville at the Theatre of Arts acting school where he was an instructor. He was very much the same character in real life as he portrayed on Mash. Kinda dorky and goofy.
As a lifelong military careerist I did not care for M*A*S*H the TV series. I did, however, like the movie. I did particularly like Larry in the Rockford Files episode A Deadly Maze.
Every one of his co-stars on MASH said that the role of Frank Burns was both the polar opposite of who Larry Linville truly was, and the most difficult role to play. Larry and Gary Burghoff were very close friends off camera. Frank was always my favourite character, and you’re right Steve, the show simply wasn’t the same after he left. If it’s okay with way you Steve, I’d love for you to do a video of one of my favourite TV stars, Vic Morrow. He was a very underrated actor who is sadly more remembered by how he was killed on the set of “Twilight Zone; The Movie” than for his acting. Interesting fact;- When Morrow was filming “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry” in 1974, his role was of a cop chasing the protagonists using a helicopter. He insisted on a one million dollar life insurance policy before he’d film anything in the chopper. When asked why, he said “I’ve always had a premonition about dying in a helicopter accident.” Spooky huh?! Cheers mate, Craig 🇦🇺🇺🇸❤️
It did run too long, and I read that after Hot Lips got married, he felt extraneous which led to his exit. He was great in his role. I'm surprised he had so many wives who cleaned him out, however.
Linville was the man! He played the part perfectly, and left at the right time. As for the “one dimensional” complaint, I can see where as an actor he’d have wished for more. But when you look at real life, aren’t there a whole lot of one-dimensional folks out there? And aren’t many of them of the same ilk as the Frank Burns character?
There's no question Linville's contribution to the earlier episodes of MASH made it legendary. In some respects, he painted himself into a corner and could not possibly humanise the Frank Burns character and therefore left the series. One thing I do know - the acting in MASH remained top shelf and made it, in my opinion, the best TV series to come out of America.
It was never the same when McClean Stevens and Wayne Rogers left actually. I kind of agree with Larry. His character Frank Burns was getting stale, I mean they made him dumber and dumber each season. Seriously how much farther could you go with this character? I have never been a fan of turning M*A*S*H into a drama, which really is what they eventually did. The first 3 seasons will always be M*A*S*H for me, the rest of the series turned into the Hawkeye Pierce show. Later the over dramatic Hawkeye Pierce show. Hate the final episode. I always felt that Wayne Roger's Trapper John was my favorite character, still think he should have been equal with Hawkeye rather than giving Alan Alda star billing.
I totally agree. You hit the nail on the head. First three seasons were so Superior !!!!! Four and five were ok but after Larry left I was pretty much done.
I think that M*A*S*H was at its best in seasons 4 & 5, the last two with Linville and the first two with Mike Farrell and Harry Morgan. After this, the show evolved, taking on deeper themes, and Frank Burns' character wouldn't have been a good fit. This isn't a knock on Linville as much as on the writers, who never let his character develop.
When i watch reruns of Mash, I always look for ones that have Larry Linville.
Larry was my acting coach in the early 70s at "Theater OF Arts" in L.A. He was a cool guy to work with. RIP my friend.....
Mash was never the same after Linville left, he played that character to perfection. One of tv's all time great buffoons. The man you loved to hate.
I was a soldier posted to Korea in the 90's. At the time I was there , the Army was closing the last M.A.S.H. hospital. We were at a gunnery range called MPRC. He sounds like a man with a good sense of humor and a desire for versatile roles. I always liked MASH.
Rest In Peace 🕊️🙏 Mr. Linville.
Your right. Mash was never as good without Larry Linville He played that part perfectly Always made me laugh
He played frank so well that he knew it was hardly possible to like him personally but when you see past frank I can appreciate all the more.❤
I didn't know he was in so many shows. He played his part great on M*A*S*H. Thanks for all the info about him. Died too young. I loved M*A*S*H and was sad when any of the original cast left. You're doing a great job.
Meet Larry in I believe 1998 0r 99. He was playing Scrooge at a local play house. Very Cool guy . RIP Ferret face
Wow, that is great.
Rest in peace Mr Larry Linville God Bless 🙏 to you 😊❤
You're right. I loved watching Mash to see Frank, Radar Henry and Klinger. It just wasn't the same after Larry Linville left.
Thank you for this video. I learned things about him that I didn't know. MASH was definitely not the same after he left.
Huh?? You way off base
You're right!
He was a winner. Thanks Steve.
Larry was one of my favorites on there. I agree with you, the show wasn't the same when he left.
You are correct, sir. The show was never the same after Larry left. Kudus to another great tribute. Love the channel 👍🏼
I agree, wasn't the same after he left.l loved his character on M.A.S.H!❤❤
Frank was MASH .
The first time I saw a ferret, I suddenly understood why that was Frank Burns’ nickname. Every time I saw him in MASH after that, I got the giggles. Winchester had his moments but I missed Frank.
MASH was even worse when Gary Burghoff left and Klinger became a normal solider ditching his “Section 8” persona.
I was born in '76 and I don't remember very well M.A.S.H. but I would say: such a caravan of amazing film credits he had!!
It seems to me that the chemistry in original casting of some of those shows could never be topped. Linville was the right fit.
Absolutely agree. Never as good after he left.
You did an amazing job creating this Video . As usual . In my opinion , MASH can't continue without a few of the really important Characters . And Larry is definitely one of them .
I would absolutely Love to see more Videos about more people from MASH .
I hope you're doing well and staying safe . 🎸
One of his plague is how well he played Frank Burns. Too well not to judge his real life character.
No, M*A*S*H wasn't as good without good ole boy Frank Burns. I always looked forward to his character. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for the education, Steve.
Any time!
Thank you Mr Linvill
I liked him. Fun and good actor. RIP 💟
It was a bit empty after Larry left. He took care of the wounded soldiers when he wanted to.
Frank made the show hilarious. After Frank, it was just funny. RIP Larry.
Larry was the best character on MASH
I liked Larry for sure! We watch 2 episodes every evening at dinner time .😇📺🎥⭐️
Good old MeTV.

Frank Burns was from my hometown of Fort Wayne - "The Brussels of the Midwest" 😂😂
Great channel concept!!

I agree that the show was not the same after he left. I also understand that he had to do what he felt was best.
Don't forget that Dr. Frank Burns was from Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Brussels of the Midwest.

My favorite character on Mash.
I was upset he left. The show just wasn’t the same after.
I think Winchester filled in fine... I think the Series ran longer than it needed to!
Worcestershire.
@@TheLifeandSadEnding Wisata-sheer!
Winchester sucked!
He was a likable actor in any role he played, but I think he was a very special 'character' in MASH which was crucial to the show. I only saw the in German dubbed shows in Germany but once he left...no, it just was not the same. Thanks for covering Larry Linville.
Thank you for leaving an excellent comment!
I liked him in MASH ❤
In the end credits of TV shows. His name was Laurence Linville.
Missed Frank. It wasn't the same after he left the show.
There were a few episodes that showed Frank Burns' vulnerability and insecurities.
I appreciate that.

From what I have heard, Larry Linville was absolutely the opposite from the Frank Burns character he portrayed.
Larry was great in that role and I don't think the show was as perfect after he left. I used to get such a kick out of him & Hot Lips and their, er....relationship. Thank you for sharing!
I would have liked to see the Frank Burns character be given the opportunity to grow and become more multi-dimensional, as Major Houlihan did.
He is listed in my family tree as 5th cousin 😊
That's cool.
I watch mash every night, I've seen every episode about 20 times ,plus. I think the show had a loss of comedic value when Larry left, he was the third stooge that the show never got back. Frank Burns Eats Worms!
I believe that mash was real in the fact that they did replace certain personnel, which the Army does during combat situations.
Larry Linville’s character (Frank Burns) had become some what one dimensional. As noted by the changes made when David Ogden Stiers character (Charles Emerson Winchester) came in.
I never grew tired of MASH. Linville's leaving didn't impact me much, though I enjoyed the character he played.
Funny, I always thought you were pretty much washed up if you took a ride on The Love Boat!!😂

As a lifelong military careerist I did not care for M*A*S*H the TV series. I did, however, like the movie. I did particularly like Larry in the Rockford Files episode A Deadly Maze.
I personally enjoyed the show more with the character Charles Winchester. I didnt realize Mr Linville was only 60 at time of his death. Cancer sucks..

Frank Burns eats worms.
Great show Mash yeah show was fine after Larry but better with him.
It did run too long, and I read that after Hot Lips got married, he felt extraneous which led to his exit. He was great in his role. I'm surprised he had so many wives who cleaned him out, however.
He was also in The Jeffersons spinoff show "Florence "
I think I may remember that. Maybe not.
Larry should've left the women alone !
And even though I missed the character of Frank played by Linville I still enjoyed M.A.S.H. after he left !
Linville was the man! He played the part perfectly, and left at the right time. As for the “one dimensional” complaint, I can see where as an actor he’d have wished for more. I agree. Larry was mash , i didn't much care for Charles or the show really after Poor old Frank left.
Frank just wanted to be included in the fun.
It was never the same when McClean Stevens and Wayne Rogers left actually. I kind of agree with Larry. His character Frank Burns was getting stale, I mean they made him dumber and dumber each season. He passed nearly a quarter century ago
Time flies.
When Larry left the show was different....not better or worse....just different...
How is the monetization thing now? Hope it is better👍 I enjoy your video's.
It's good for now. Thanks. Fingers still crossed.
Hell yes. Mash grew stronger w out Burns, Trapper and Henry. Whats wrong w you people??
Good video. I watched him in many shows, but on MASH his character was slightly obnoxious. Just me. 👍
Obnoxious yes, funny yes!
Larry's character never had the chance to evolve. This was one of the few glaring miscues of the heralded series.
Winchester was a good replacement but Burns made the show go along with Henry Blake.
MASH definitely wasn’t the same after Larry left. He was an integral part of the show’s success.David Ogden Stiers fell way short of replacing Larry…
MASH was better with Linville then without 🤣him…..
Yes, I thought David Ogden Stiers was great as the wealthy surgeon Major Charles Emerson Winchester III.
M*A*S*H was a good show- but it got played out and over-dramatized. The best episodes were with Col.Blake and Frank Burns.
