My concern isn't so much how to pack, I'm pretty good at that. My problem is I have thousands of books, most in super-fantastic condition, and I live on the fifth floor of an apartment building. Getting my books to a moving truck is going to be quite a job.
Did your building have an elevator? Otherwise, gathering a bunch of friends to pass (small) boxes of books down the stairs, bucket-brigade style, would seem to be the easiest way to get the books down to a moving truck. (Selling off whichever books you can bear to part with (maybe on eBay or Amazon Marketplace?) would help, too.)
I'm moving and I've started doing something that works well for me. I have bins labeled "miscellaneous" where I didn't really know where to put something (e.g. "kitchen" or "bathroom). When I'm done packing a box meant for a specific destination, I'm filling up the remaining space with these miscellaneous items. I'm doing the same thing with books. Instead of putting the packing paper in the extra space, I'm just stuffing my miscellaneous doodads. It's probably not as safe for the books as the paper would be, but I think it's going to work well for me.
I sell books on eBay, and thought I pretty well knew how to pack books, but I still picked up a few tips here. Currently helping my daughter purge her book collection before she moves. (Lots of YA books she hasn't read in a decade will be going to Goodwill this weekend.)
I find that it differs on category. Many Scholastic or generic "chapter books" are the same approxinate size. Manga has 2 main, 3 overall standard sizes. Any English language manga after 2003 is the same size. Textbooks and workbooks that have partners(textbooks designed to each have an accompanying workbook) will also be similar. Otherwise, yes. So many books are incredly different in size especially with larger time periods(books 100 or more years in age vs 3 years)and various countries. Time periods and age range help you find similar sizes, but with only a small amount of books, they'll be uneven, and with a huge amount, you'll be best served by starting a few boxes at a time and gathering your books based on size. When you unpack, leave space for books that may have been separated and picture a general area that you want to use for series, author, age-range, or genre. It's exhausting when thinking abiut and planning, but in practice it's faster and more natural when actually moving the books, but repetitive and time consuming.
Depends on the size of the Bankers Box. I've sold books on eBay for several years, and I've learned the hard way that I don't want to ship bulk lots of books in anything bigger than a copy-paper carton (approx. 17"x11"x10"); they're just too heavy otherwise!
I am moving & I had some women come in to help me pack & they charged me a fortune & packed my books incorrectly. They bought a ton of bankers boxes that I paid for, because they said that was the best way to pack books. I don't want to waste them (there's at least 75 left & lots of books to pack). I'm concerned that if I need to put them in storage for a bit, bugs might get in the boxes due to the handle openings....,albeit, I would put them in a secure temperature controlled building...mouth I'm still afraid they may warp. When I had a flood in my basement, the ins co sent these jerks who just threw all my hardcover books in boxes & they came back warped & bent.
@@shepburn4755 Agreed that you wouldn't want to have anything in a cardboard box on the basement floor; plastic tote tubs are far better for that purpose. The only thing with plastic tote tubs and books is that the large tote tubs may be too heavy to lift if they're filled with books. So if you want to use plastic tubs for books, pick smaller ones (no bigger than 12"x12"x18"). Or pack lighter/bulky items in the large plastic tote tubs (my kids would put desktop computers in them, well-wrapped in bedding & towels, when moving into college dorms), and have those on the basement floor, with the "bankers boxes" of books stacked on top of them.
I'm packing my books which are all white papered and paperback, if theyre packed like this (horizontally) they wont turn yellow will they? Because of it being in an inclosed space
For long-term storage of books, you want to keep them dry and away from vermin. Away from direct sunlight is probably a good idea, too, as covers will fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight. For myself, if I have books I no longer want ready access to, I'd rather sell or donate them than keep them boxed up long-term.

@@ReadingAde A box called Book Box. Most moving companies sell them. Some even sell them as a bundle. Just look for them to get the best fit for your books.
As a long time Mega Book seller I can tell you this is so sorry it makes flames shoot out of my eyes! You never never never pack hard backs like that! By the time you pull them out of storage you will have destroyed your spines if there is any weight on top of the box at all. Bad idea!
As profoundly simple as this concept is, I had not thought of it.🤨 Thanks! 😎
Thanks for posting this. I'm moving a good size library and this was a great help!

I hear ya. Kind of a nightmare.
Do you have a window that opens above the truck? Just make sure no-one is standing underneath when you drop the boxes.
@NakedSnake Nerds take such remarks as compliments.

I used my small stuffed animals for the extra space lol. Saved paper and moved more stuff in less boxes/bags
FEWER!
Sorry, just had to.

Who has books that are all the same size like that?

Oh no, all my books are special lol so do I cover all of them? Hahahahahaha
Ha ha
I would have to do it to all of them lol 😂
I've been packing my books wrong!! Thanks for setting me straight.
What type and size of box do you recommend for moving collection of LPs long distance? Thank you.
Thanks so much for the helpful advice!
It was a great help.
Thanks for this! It helped me
Very helpful!

Are there any drawbacks to packing the books as shown in the video and storing it for months or years. Will that cause degradation of paper?
***** yes it will. IF you just leave them like that for years it will. I suggest do this for shipping. Storing is another matter.

What if the books are mostly Paperbacks?
Thanks
This guy knows SOME SHIT ABOUT PACKING BOOKS

U-Pack what size box is recommended?
@@ReadingAde A box called Book Box. Most moving companies sell them. Some even sell them as a bundle. Just look for them to get the best fit for your books.
Why put the spine facing inwards?

Ca Ther Jesus, sorry yikes I feel your pain.
You have my sympathies. I know the feeling. :(
Woah! Digital might be a good option in the future if that’s a normal yr for you!LOL
You must have commitment issues
Did the movers complain?

What would you do instead?
Gardenslover always pack them flat and fill the empty spaces with paper if you can.
I'm moving to my home about 200 km far from my current address by train.
I was concerned about my books.
I have over 300 😮
I ve got LODES of books AND I ve got more then THAT BOOKS 📚
How *NOT* to ship books. The corners of those books are going to get smashed during transit.
How do you prevent them from getting smashed corners then?
