Books, hardback or paperback, should NEVER be packed laying flat. I mean, that's how they do it in every library you've ever been in, right? That might work if the books will be unpacked in a short period of time but leave them packed for a few months or years and you're liable to find slick pages stuck to one another. Besides, I believe that packing them standing vertical allows to more efficiently pack more books into the carton.
A big void in that box lets see packing up a library with thousands of books & hundreds of book cartons stacked on top of each other those boxes will soon collapse & one piece of tape across centre will soon push & collapse in

Old newspaper could result in the ink bleeding and spreading on the contents of the box. This could be caused by water, where people may be moving in rain or by condensation from moving in different temperatures.
