One of the best cab ride videos I’ve seen. The footage is superb which makes it a pleasure to watch and the graphics are very nice too.
Up there with yours Don.
Thank you and I’m glad that you enjoyed the video.
If the 'Don' says it is good, then it is good. Gold stamp of approval by Don Coffey, you could not ask for more. I loved this vid, clear as a bell and a lower view than normal. I felt I was just above the Rail. Brilliant.
Time to put up one of yours, Don. I am running out of cab rides!
The Don seal of approval :)
Amazing video. At 18 mins and 7 secs. I used to stand on that footbridge at Vale Rd in Northfleet as a child in the 1970's, waving to the drivers. My parents old house is clearly visible. So many great memories of those times
Great touch showing the loco and train, before setting off...👍🏻👍🏻.
I love the sound of the engine frpm the 66!
Beautifully crisp and clear video.
Thank you
58 years ago i used to cross that footbridge at 45:43 every day walking to and from school.... the only thing that's changed is the antivandal netting. Wonderful video and interesting routing.
Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed it
Took me back 60 years to my boyhood in Tenterden. Left for Australia by train from Headcorn on a steam train. Loved the video. A brilliant tour of the Kentish countryside.
Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Route map = instant subscription. Clear, informative captions = instant like. Superb video quality = more please.
Thank you and welcome to the channel. More will follow
You’ve got Don’s seal of approval!
And mine in the form of a new subscriber.
Was a great video mate.
How wonderful it was to enjoy a virtual rail tour through my county of birth. A lot has changed in the forty plus years since I moved away, and yet after spotting a field of hops, a couple of oast houses and some brilliant white chalk quarry faces in your video I felt right at home. Thank you... 🙂
p.s. The origin of this journey is not a million miles away from where I was born (Strood).
Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video
Great watch! Used to work at canterbury west, how things have changed along the line in the many years since I moved ‘up north’ fully enjoyed that! Will be watching again some point - to much to take in on one watch!
Oh by the way, I’ve liked and subscribed 👍
Welcome to the channel
Great video, I noticed an old style WHISTLE sign at 2:19:10 very surprised to see on still standing, when were they superseded by the W signs and as the driver didn't blow the horn, maybe it shouldn't be still up.
Wonderful video, thanks. And the camera pointing at the track instead of the sky = subscription!
Thank you
Brilliant. My local area and routes I use frequently, only a different view! Yes, I have done the Lee Spur on a charter to Grain
Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video
Brilliant. Thanks for all the additional location information so I could follow you on a map. What a long way round!!
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it
Very good 👍 video, crisp and clear. Reasonably wide angle without too much distortion plus readable and informative captions. A pleasure to watch.
Thank you
Brilliant video. Lovely and clear 🌹🌹 and the views are outstanding
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video
Amazing footage, and superb captions to go with it too. Definitely one of my favourite cab ride videos to date, thank you for sharing this with us 😊
Thank you
Superb video, fascinating to ride along my well known local railways, including the "Dartford Loop", and past my favourite linesiding spots in the steam days of the 1950's. If Don Coffey thinks its good, then it really is. Thanks for posting a fascinating 2hrs 30mins of viewing.
Thank you
Absolutely fabulous... Thank you my friend...
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
@@BPMR Thank YOU...
Great cab ride , Tonbridge to Ashford section is practically straight the entire way 😃
Thank you, if you look at a map you’ll see that the line is straight from Redhill as it was the original mainline built by the South Eastern Railway. The mainline from Sevenoaks was built later.
A pleasure to watch. Thank you. I’ll return with all my questions later.
Thank you
Got to agree with Don, the video is superbly clear and the graphics don't overwhelm. I love Don's videos but sometimes I think there is a bit too much information, which detracts from the running picture. (Not a complaint by the way, Don is superb and works so hard on his vids). I love this area of Kent etc and Freight Trains are my favourite so I really enjoyed this and have obviously subscribed. Thank you.
Beautifully clear picture.. can clearly see smoke stains from steam trains of many years ago on some of the older bridges..
Thank you
I agree with Don Coffey. A great video, well worth the two hour delay before bed.
Thank you. I hope you got some sleep in the end.
Thank you for posting this fantastic video, I enjoyed every minute of it. Also thank you for everyone involved putting this together to make this possible. Please 🙏 keep up the good work.
Thank you. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.
Great video, good quality and really enjoyed the route. Hope we get too see more.
Thank you. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
absolutley brilliant loved every moment of this
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Thank you for an excellent video! I can't add to anything Don Coffey has said below!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks ! Really enjoyed that video Great couple of hours thanks.
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video.
Fantastic, great .. what more can I say ! very much appreciated. thks
Thank you
Great footage! reminds me of my days as a secondman at Gillingham MPD
Thank you
Great video, I don't see many cab rides around my local county, especially in a 66. Thanks for uploading :)
Thank you
@@BPMR You're welcome
Fascinating and informative- followed the whole journey on Google Earth on an adjacent lap-top. More please.
Thank you, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. More will follow.
Absolutely brilliant, a railtour of Kent, form the cab, did question the route myself at first, but that was explained, been on so many of these as a passenger
Thank you and I’m glad that you enjoyed the video
For those who didn't watch the entire video: what was the explanation for the route?
I'm in Louisiana in the US. I take it that this is an electric-powered freight train with third rail powering since it makes no stops. Loved the trip. Beautiful countryside. 😃
Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. The locomotive is a Class 66 which has a diesel engine powering electric traction motors. Doesn’t take any juice from the 3rd Rail. They were built in Canada.
I'm curious: How did you manage to NOT hear the loud diesel engine?
@@yvindascanius6061 Easy. KI wasn't listening for it, just as I don't give a crap about you.
Good stuff. Just the right amount of information.
Thank you
A great couple of hours, thanks.
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video
Part of my family left Headcorn and some other local villages to come to New South Wales about 200 years ago. Still here. 🏳🌈
I agree with other posters about the excellent quality of this video. I don't know if you are looking for suggestions for other routes in this area, but there is a freight train which leaves Dollands Moor nearly every weekday morning en-route for Daventry via Willesden. I would enjoy seeing the route from the Channel tunnel through London to Willesden, and the only duplication to this video would be the couple of miles through Ashford station.
Thank you, I am limited to where I get sent at work, plus waiting for the right time to film taking into account daylight and the weather.
Fantastic ride, love the real time videos 10/10.
Thank you
excellent, many thanks for posting.
Thank you.
Great ride, excellent video. Not that familiar with north Kent, so this was special. I’m a Yank, but Canterbury West was my home station when I lived in England. Looking forward to your next posting.
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. I’m currently trying to film the next video but the English weather has been so dull and grey over the last few days.
Once upon a time, German planes invaded the British skies... Today German trains (the red DB loc in the beginning) are crisscrossing British railroads, without causing alarms to go off. The world has changed a lot since the Battle of Britain.
Better to have DB than EWS (Wisconsin Central Transportation Systems/subsidiary of Canadian National).
As with other English freight trips, never straightforward. But always fun to see which way they chose. 🏳🌈
Thanks for a fab video, and good annotation too.
Thank you
Thank you for a wonderful drivers eye view. A variety of traction from Track M machines to 700s and other stock. I have also seen that Red/Green Barrier Crossing (Whitehall) on other RUclips footage (I think)
Thank you
Awsome i drive a lot with the 66 in TrainSim World 4 most advance trainsimulator ever but not much fun as in real in cab with thad much power under the hood 😁
Happy memories of the Loop Line from 1964 - 2009.
I’m glad the video brought back some happy memories
Really fab
Thank you
i drove this route in train sim world 3 and it aas a amazing route
Very enjoyable!
Thank you.
Great 👌
Thank you
Great video loved it 😃
Thank you
I'm curious as to where that train was going. There's nothing at Canterbury West that would accept a long aggregate train, as far as I remember (the mines and quarries round Sturry, a few miles past Canterbury West, are all closed now, I believe, and their sidings removed), and apart from an aggregate plant round Minster/Ramsgate, there seems to be nowhere else. Perhaps it was just a sightseeing excusion?
From reading another comment by the channel, the train was heading for an Engineering Posession
The train was on an engineering service carrying top ballast for a track renewal. The renewal was on the down line so that train had to arrive on the up line alongside so that it can be unloaded.
A 'text book' drive.
Nice one. Thanks.
However colors are not as natural as they could be. Perhaps you should play with camera settings and find a netter configuration of brightness and that red-yellow-orange-warm spectrum. Video will get on quality. In my opinion.
Thank you. This was my first attempt at colour grading and the video was washed out when first transferred to the PC.
I thoroughly enjoyed that video will you be doing more of these in the future?
I will do as and when the opportunity to film the routes in decent weather and daylight come up.
Fabulous ride. I am assuming the Hither Green Signal Box is now superfluous to requirements or is it still used for the yard? Many thanks.
Thank you. The box is disused I believe. At best it might get used for storage from the yard. Movement’s into and out of the yard are now controlled by Three Bridges ROC.
That’s a long way round to get to Canterbury from Hoo. Probably a good reason…so why not go via the Medway Towns and get there in minutes?
@18:19 45mph looks really fast
I see that around 2:07:50 there is a maintenance train running off the third rail. Although I am assuming that the vehicle gets its power from more than one source and hence wouldn't require the third rail for power when it is being stabled, is it common for trains other than those carrying passengers to use the third rail? Are there any freight trains that use it?
What you saw was a Class 73 which uses the 3rd rail and also has a Diesel engine for non 3rd rail lines.
Thank you for uploading this masterpiece!
But wouldn't it be faster to take the route via Faversham/Ramsgate to Canterbury West? :D
Thank you, The train had to arrive at the worksite on the opposite track to where the work was being carried out. It makes it easier for the wagons to be unloaded.
@@BPMR ahh that makes sense, thanks!
Thank you for this wonderful video, especially the trip around the Lee Spur. But why would a train take such a long and roundabout route from Hoo Junction? Can you explain please?
Thank you, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. The train needed to arrive at an engineering possession with the loco and wagons facing in a certain direction. Its a lot easier to just route the train around in a big circle (as it was booked to return to Hoo Junction later that evening) then it is to run the loco around the train. The train was carrying new ballast as a section of track on the opposite line was being renewed. If the train had arrived on the wrong line then there may not be any track for it to run on.
Brilliant video. This route must cost a fortune in fuel though?
Very interesting. i'm new to this 'game' and was wondering if someone could tell me why the third-rail (?), which I assume is an electrical pickup, swaps from side to side. I wondered if it was to even out wear but the lengths seemed random so ..... ?
You are right the rail switches from side to side to try and even out the wear, Gaps are provided for pointwork, crossings and electrical gaps between the substations but I’m not sure if it is random, or planned. I have seen the rail swapped over during track replacement so who knows.
@@BPMR Thank you.
Interesting - loved the route diagram, how did you create that?
Thank you. The route diagram was created on a piece of software called Davinci Resolve. Funny enough the 20 seconds of animation took me longer to make then the rest of the video.
Hoo Junction to Canterbury West is just 45 miles via the M2 motorway. According to Google Maps you can drive that distance by car in 41 minutes. But if I go by train NOW (Sunday evening 23.30hrs ) Google says it will take me 6 hours & 8 mins, with 3 changes necessary !! Probably be almost as quick to walk ! So where was that freight train going ?
The train was on an engineering service carrying top ballast for a track renewal. The renewal was on the down line so that train had to arrive on the up line alongside so that it can be unloaded.
A really great video…….why so much graffiti on every building along the line….?
very good but shame it fizzled out at the end......or is there part 2?
I’m glad you enjoyed it, unfortunately the memory ran out on the camera shortly after passing Canterbury. The train was booked to arrive at the possession just after Sturry so only lost a couple of miles.
👍
why not the south coast route.
Excellent video, thanks. Where was the train heading to ?
Thank you. The train was heading to an engineering possession just past Sturry for track replacement.
@@BPMR Thanks.
wellworth subscribing to. Q i thought speed limit for heavy frieght was 60mph also could you mention tonnage and final destination IE cement works or export?
Thank you, the speeds mentioned on screen are the maximum permanent speeds for all traction, i thought that I may start to confuse people if I posted the current speed of the train. Your right the service filmed was a class 6 freight so top speed was 60mph. The tonnage was around 1800-2000 tons of ballast for a track renewal at Minster.
@@BPMR thqnks for reply now im not so confused lol
@@BPMR 2000 tonnes of ballast? That explains why poor 66 was running such high revs during most of the journey.
Could you tell me how long the journey is?
Nice video
Thank you from Argentina
Gracias, the journey time is about 2 hours 30 minutes
Why was the route so elaborate
The train was on an engineering service carrying top ballast for a track renewal. The renewal was on the down line so that train had to arrive on the up line alongside so that it can be unloaded.
hola, datos tecnicos del tren?
Excellent footage but lacks the technical and historic information that sets Coffey videos apart.
Thank you for the feedback. I’m not looking to copy but I can add more details.
@@BPMR Just keep up the good work. Obviously there is a lot of history around your area but not everyone has the time to research and add a lot of detail. Did wonder what those old brick structures were (41:00). Goods sheds?
Is this your locomotive?
I was on board at the time
How many times did we pass over the river stour
A few.
I counted six such occurrences.
What is the third rail for ,electric ?
Yes, the 3rd rail delivers 750v DC power to trains.
Why such a long way round, please ?
The train was heading to a possession which required it to arrive on a certain line. The track was being renewed on the opposite line. It’s usually easier to route engineering trains round in big circles then arranging for locos to be run round the train on route.
How do you get cab rides like these? Would love to have one myself
I’m fortunate enough to work on the railway.
@@BPMR So I suppose it's almost impossible without any connections
where is this england
The journey starts in Kent in the South East, heads into South London briefly before heading back into Kent again.
? what country ?
♥
UK
This was filmed in Kent and South East London in the United Kingdom.
Play it at .25x……
thumbs up.
I should think if you put a small compass in one corner of the screen many would be surprised at how circuitous some of these routes are.
An interesting idea. Thank you
Is the reason it went to Lee and turned back on itself to go via a quieter route with all green signals? I would've thought heading south from Dartford would've been quicker.
