I think some kind of funereal bagpipes played when Pyxis and the others became titans because that was their death, and thanks to the Ymir we met first, we know that life as a pure titan is a nightmare. I think the music is cathartic because they're freeing them from that hell. And it's all done within a single song because pure titans are no longer the indomitable threat they once were because humanity within the walls had progressed and struggled. I still dont love when more pop kind of songs play at dramatic scenes, just like when that song played the first time back in season 2, but i do think that's what it's meant to convey.

I believe they played Barricades because they are doing the same thing they were doing in season two(when we first heard the song Barricades) they were fighting titans, fighting their former comrades. We also learned Titans were former humans in season two. I personally didn't find the music heroic in this scene like it was intended in season 2, I found it very bittersweet and I believe that was the intention.

    • @storieswithstyle

For me it was just "shonen music because badassary". Also, the people they fight WITH are the problem. it is as if they suddenly randomly started fighting a horde of titans with Reiner and Bert in 2x7 after the reveal (exaggeerating a bit here). =D

@@storieswithstyle I definitely think the fact that this is a show that I started watching when I was in middle school and finished in my junior year of highschool plays a part in the bittersweetness of the music choice.

My take about the choice of music during the fight against titans is that they wanted to do a call back to the first seasons where they were fighting titans.
Maybe they tried to create a contrast between the fact that now we know they're killing people and how heroic it seemed in season 1 and 2.
I agree with you, if they made a melancholic version of it we would still have the callback and the right mood for the scene.
In the end it was the anime director choice (and maybe a bit Isayama as he did take part in the anime supervision here and there)

Old Titans were killed just as Titans and later we came to know at least who most of them were before

I love how much you love Gabi. She gets a lot of hate from fans who simply can't forgive her for killing Sasha, but as soon as that episode hit, I immediately knew we were about to see one of the best character arcs ever. It was obvious that she was being set up as a parallel for Eren and the only reason to make her so hateable early on was to redeem her later. That said, even though I knew what direction her character was going in, I was still blown away by how well it was executed.
This and Children of the Forest are two of my favourite episodes because of how they progress Gabi's character.

    • @carljohan9265
      @carljohan9265 Месяц назад +2

Because the militaries can be rebuilt, and as technology advances titans will eventually become obsolete.
Also Eren will be dead by that time and Historia's kids will have had to eat her and each other to pass on the founding titan.
There are other reasons to but that's getting into spolers.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  Месяц назад +1

I disagree. Destroying the military bases would have been the most sensible thing. Especially just destroying Marleys, as they had then had problems with the rest of th eworld. Involving the others to unite against Edlia was just Eren wanting an excuse to kill everyone, after all.

    • @vincentvieille5996
      @vincentvieille5996 Месяц назад

@@storieswithstyle I agree, it was just an excuse for Eren. But from a logic point of view, Carljohan is right. Military can be rebuilt, the Founder will need to be passed down, to assure that Marley will never attack again, and for that you need to sacrifice Historia and her childs. No matter what Eren wanted, it's a fact. But it will be the original plan from Armin, who wanted Eren to use the Rumbling as a deterrant, to take time to built weaponery, so that they don't have to use the Rumbling anymore. And to work, it need Historia to be a titan, and an inheritor for Eren's titan, who will be cursed by its power again. It's the better choice for everyone, but it's not for Historia's childs... No matter what, children will be sacrificed in the process. There are no perfect solution in this. It's up to people to choose what they value the most.

It's even the Founder who made the Ackermanns, by activating some titan's power in human form. Remember Ackermanns are titan in human size ... They have their strength, and fight experiences from past generations.

The "friendly" music is because they are putting them to rest, Pixis came to terms with that, and when the time came he relaxed a bit just before hand. He knew his students and soldiers would do what needs to be done so the song is a sense of duty. Its sad but there is not time to be sad and sad music is slow. They need up beat, action packed shots and a rhythm to match just the imagery. The sense of duty comes from recalling Pixis, the growth between time when the last saw him as young kids.
Slow sad music is not the choice here. Just try to make it fit. You can't, 100% you wont be able to.

Nah, butting people to rest is not this action heavy. ZThis was "look how cool we are", even though the lyrics might have fit. if I could have heard the lyrics better, perhaps, but like this it was just unfitting "look we are shonen-fighting"

for the amount of time the show has been around, for how much of a masterpeice it is, you think they would just "f*ck up" this one thing right at the end? 3000 frames of animation for 20 mins. They dont just say "aaahh throw this song in" and wing it, it was very thought out like everything in the show. Not some throw-away music or scene.
Attack on Titan doesn't "look cool" for reasons like that.
It follows some anime tropes, but this is not one of those times.
Freeing music for freeing Pixis. Its a sign of respect they don't hesitate and they teamed up quickly and just got the job done. That whole scene they were trying to get ready to go to Eren but had to do this first, its a time sensitive moment and so faster music was needed.
I still suggest just opening two tabs and try to fit music to that scene that is sad and slow. It just don't match up.

I'll think about the price of our soul
We've got to learn to live free, live free
We'll live a life without barricades"
One of the Barricades to living free, is the situation they are all in. Having to lay their comrades to rest, their own morality was about to get in the way of putting Pixis out of his misery for a second there, but the sense of duty was stronger and again, they have 0 time to be all sad and emo about this. They have to kill the titans and get moving, they are trying to show this being a time sensitive moment. Keep pushing forward, even if its over the bodies of your ranking officers, again the reason that is "ok" is because those officers knew what would happen, they knew that once they turn their own soldiers would have to stop them, its their DUTY.
I still suggest that you look up a sad AoT track, and try to make it fit, no fancy editing just open two different tabs and play them at the same time. I tried some, it doesn't fit the animation. Also it just feels like, WAY too much sad stuff considering the last few episodes. Its been nothing but sad orchestral for a while. The show runners probably felt that it was all way too depressing and emo so they changed the pace.
I think it's contrasting, like how you pick contrasting colors its just contrasting music style. Changes everything.
Don't get me wrong, I get where you are coming from, but why does every single death have to be played off with sad music? can no one be put to rest with mutual understanding and respect?
this was "freeing" music, and they "freed" Pixies. That's how I feel.

I interpreted the heroic music as signifying the resolve to continue on. After everything that’s happened, they could give up, they could let the world continue on its course, but at the end of the day, they are still who they are, and have seen and done too much. They can’t sit idly by, so no matter how painful to kill their former comrades. they take action to save those who can still be saved. Which is a microcosm for the remainder of the series.

Nicholo saying we have to 'escape the forest' is a continuation of what Mr. Braus said in S4 ep 13. That the world is one gigantic forest that came into existence from the mistakes of adults and that it is the adults responsibility to keep the children out of the forest (stop repeating the cycle). It is definitely one of the most essential themes in the story and is beautifully done here as well.

Regarding your question about sacrificing Falco, while I think most of us have someone we'd like to bring back, I think there are several counterarguments to be made from both a logical and emotional perspective. Within the context of this story you'd be damning them to 13 years as a titan shifter, after which they'd again die, possibly to be eaten by someone else. And even without that stipulation how do you think that person would feel about being brought back at the cost of someone else's life, an innocent even?
That being said Connie's impulsive actions are entirely understandable.

Apple seed for sure would be a good decision too i think even though it's the thematic soudtrack for berthold. It's just how aot's soundtracks work they start with chords in season1 that evolve for the characters they're written for. Barricades was a bit out of the box mostly bc the soundtracks they have are linked to season1 characters while as Barricades is a completely unique theme only accuring in season2 episode 12 showing the scouts being slaughtered but making they're way out due to eren setting them "free". These fighting scenes and the topic of relief are linked to the new generation of scouts(and sadly yaegerists) that overtake and now kill the last normal titans to exist in a hommage to the first seasons. Ur indeed not wrong that other music would also fit, but it's more that the reaction can't really go into depth on the sountrack storyline. @storieswithstyle

Her features were more stereotypically exaggerated in the beginning and shifted a lot (pink lips, massive eyes, nonexistent nose) to make her distinct and ‘anime pretty’ but with a more consistent artstyle in S4, I like it more. In reality men and womens faces look more similar than one would expect, and also especially considering the fact that she IS very masculine due to her role in the story and her cutting her hair for tactical reasons. We see at the end she looks very beautiful and feminine when she wears a dress.

I think the music is there because this scene is a callback to season 1.
The manga fans have redone scenes from season 4 because they really wanted classic ost from season 1 right there. (Eren and reiner in the declaration of war but with the betrayal ost when reiner reveals he is a titan)
Also I have seen many fans be really happy when listening to classic ost reused in the scenes that are meant to represent parallels to season 1.
I guess this choice was for the fans. They literally would have redone this scene just to put that music... Again.
So I don't mind. Ruins the moment, but brings back memories to this same moment in season 1. Another parallel. The author loves to do them. And the fans crave for them 😅.

I would say the only logical explanation as to how the wall titans are able to cover the whole world is if the world that AOT is set in doesn't have the same map as real life. In fact, I would argue that AOT's land mass is much smaller. I think it was intentional that the anime omitted the world map that was shown in the manga and only focused on Marley and Paradis island. In my mind, AOT sets in a world where there is only one continent where the biggest nation is Marley, while other nations are significantly smaller and occupy the periphery of the continent down south.

To me, the choice of music for the fight against the pure titans scene illustrates something that's been true since season 1 but most of us failed to realize: This show is actually a tragedy disguised as an action show. Because all the titans they fought back then were people too, we just didn't know it yet. It also illustrates how far our main cast has come by showing how easily they can handle the titans now compared to the Trost fight.
As for Kaya and Gabi, that is indeed one of the best arcs in the entire show, and it does illustrate one very important thing.
The real reason they are able to repair their friendship isn't because Gabi saved Kaya, it's because they both admitted their faults and wrongdoings.
Because that is something that has to happen for it to become possible for people to work through their differences and problems.
If neither side admits fault you end up with mutual dislike, if one side admits fault but the other one does not, that only creates resentment (the eldian restorationists that Grisha belonged to are a perfect example of the latter).
Both sides have to do it or nothing will change.
Conversely, if both sides do admit fault (and means it), and also committs to actually trying to do something to atone/fix the problem, then the only thing that matters from that point onwards is discussing solutions.
The scene that best illustrates this concept is the "stew scene" a little bit further ahead.
Also, Eren would have turned the pure titans back into people if he could, remember when he saw Zeke about to scream, he tried to stop him.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  Месяц назад

Yeah, ithink Isayama hid the "solution" in the background, like the flowers and I love that.
I do not think Eren would have turned them back. He probably saw it and that is why he did not change it, to ensure the rumbling suceeds. had the old guards lived, Eldia might have stopped him sooner or not at all, leaving only ruins to come back to.
Also, in Trost Mikasa was already mowing titans down with no problem. I never feared for hear being eaten really. :D I think the gripe I had is also not who they are fighting against but Wwho the are fighting WITH. :D The poeple that indeed did turn people into titans :D

I like that you stopped to think who the Titans of the Wall were as people. It's even more frigged up when you think about the numbers. At the beginning of season 1, the population is probably near its highest count. In that context, the 100,000+ who died (if I'm remembering how many died in the operation to "retake" wall Maria) represented a significant amount of the population within the walls. So I think it's safe to say the population of the people in the walls was on the order of 1 million at most. Yet, there are apparently tens of millions of colossal titans. That leads to the disturbing conclusion that the people King Fritz led to Paradis were "lucky" if they had their memories wiped and got to start over. If those numbers are right, the majority of the people that King Fritz brought to the island were turned into living prisoners as Wall Titans, which I think number at least 500,000 (according to various web site estimates). Carl Fritz was Frigged Up.

i have to disagree with your opinion on apple seed being played in that scene. apple seed has usually only been played in the context of reiner and bertholdt or their battle against the scouts and so the track has lyrics that thematically fit with bertholdts/marlos storylines: "apples drop beside the tree, old man please remember me" (referring to the man who hung himself after talking to bertholdt) "steady we ride watching scenes playing out from our past, like the smell of her hair" (probably referring to marlo remembering hitch one last time before his death).
its for this reason that i dont think the track would really fit in this scene as it thematically has nothing to do with the context.
i can understand your criticism that barricades feels a little too epic, however i feel thats more subjective, as to me the song is energetic sure, but in a way thats very bittersweet and tragic. the lyrics themselves basically talk about being stuck in a cycle of bloodshed in hopes of becoming free, which perfectly fits the scene: "you know you had to kill her, oh my dirty hands it never fades".

22:47 Yes. He was born in this world, 100 years removed form the cycle of hate but the world brought them right back in.
In this fantasy world, the stakes are clear cut. We started this show with Eren and watched him grow up, we are basically on his side the whole show, even when he murders two adults to save Mikasa. Now he has to kill a couple nations to save Armin and Mikasa and so many more islanders who BTW up until recently had no memory of the outside world for 100 years, they don't even understand what a "nation" is, its a line in the show. They had no idea they can turn into titans, and the world still hates them for that fact. It's the world that has continued a cycle of hate for 100yr and brought basically, Sweden into WW2, by threatening to clip the balls of every Swedish male if they don't become slaves immediately.
Two times, Eren tried peace talks, he let Tybur finish delcaring war on the Island, then Eren attacked... by definition its self defense. Before you go crying about how genocide is not self-defense look down....
In the real world, there are no such ultimatums (I do kinda count the Mutual Destruction Pact though) Peace in the real world is far more achievable, also there isn't a race of people who can blow up into giants violently, and then start eating people at random around them.
Imagine if the Jewish peoples were the subject of Ymir? Guess the world might have joined Germany maybe?
What if The Taliban could blow up into man eating giants? 9/11 would be very different.
But we don't live in that world so yes, killing lots of people = bad all the time
For this show.... Team Eren all the way, f*ck Floch though. If he did a light rumble, still gives Marley and other countries to time to advance their tech and then they just come over and kill everyone on the Island. And for the rest of time they would abuse the same Eldians on the main land they have been, feeding kids to dogs, keeping them in zones with armbands, AND they would reflect that the "Island Devils" trying to kill us just means more "sin" committed by this race and "you guys are this race so you also are responsible you monsters"... see how that works? back to square 1. If they don't decide to keep the Eldian race around they will just kill them all. So... what? like numbers mean anything? 1 life or a thousand, its still the death of someone, someones MOTHER maybe?
"Is it me, or is the world that is wrong?" Grisha after watching the man who fed his sister to dogs lie to his family's face about her death. Its the world, in this fantasy setting. That is all.

    @Oldboy_was_taken Месяц назад

I'll admit, I was really shocked when you were so angry at the music lol. In my opinion, Barricades is the perfect song to represent the meaning and message of this scene.
I usually really love how much insight you give into so much of the scenes in this series, but I honestly think you misinterpreted the meaning of this entire sequence and missed the point.
From my interpretation, Pyxis, Nile, and the rest of the Old Guard represented the ineffective old system of politics on Paradis. And although they changed their ways in the end and tried their best to help fight Eren and the Jagerists, they still represented the shackles that kept the Military system down and prevented them from effectively stopping Eren before all this could happen. Even when they did the coup d'état in Season 3 and usurped the false king, they still couldn't agree on anything and couldn't do what needed to be done to stop Eren in Season 4.
Even after the coup, the system stayed basically the same.
In short, their deaths represent the shackles being broken and the Scouts and the rest of the Military now being able to operate unhindered by the old ways. This scene represents the passing of the torch from the old leaders like Pyxis and Nile to the new leaders like Armin and Jean.
If you go back to the moment where they see Pyxis as a titan, and everyone seems horrified and saddened for a moment, the music slows down and become a softer piano plays as Armin has a look of sadness on his face as he remembers everything Pyxis did for them to help them in a flashback.
But Jean quickly steps in front of Armin and takes the center of the screen, and he tells everyone to jump into action. In my opinion, this shows how Jean is different from the Old Guard, and why he's the perfect person to take up the mantle as one of the new leaders.
Pyxis was very wise and smart, but his leadership just wasn't going to help The Military anymore. They needed someone new with new ideas and a new approach.
This is a strong parallel to when Levi chose to save Armin over Erwin in Season 3 for the same reasons. Erwin was an incredible leader and an amazing tactician, and his style of leadership was exactly what The Scouts needed during Season 1 & 2. But eventually, when the Beast Titan arrived and shattered everything the Paradisians thought they knew about the world and the Titans, his ways started to become less effective. His final plan and the suicide charge were the last things he could do to help the Scouts, because his tactics weren't as effective against the new enemy. That's why Levi chose Armin, because he (and Hange too) was the person who could fight this new enemy better than Erwin ever could. Armin's plans and his sacrifice of being burned by Bertholdt were what allowed the Scouts to defeat the Colossal Titan.
These two scenes represent the same thing.
Erwin's final plan helped to defeat the Beast Titan, but only Armin could defeat the Colossal. Exactly how Pyxis's wisdom helped our main characters by being their ally and convincing The Military to let Eren live and experiment with his power; but only Jean can lead The Military into fighting Eren and the Jaegerists.
This is why the music makes sense to me, because when Armin kills Pyxis he says: "Commander, we've made it this far all thanks to you." And the music swells and becomes more heroic again as the metaphorical torch is passed.
It's sad that the Old Guard had to die, but there's no time to mourn in this warzone, our main characters have to act quickly and will have to mourn later.
The heroic music is the theme of the New Guard breaking the old chains, taking up the mantle and leading our allies to victory.
I apologize if I repeated myself a lot here.... lol. I just wanted to get my point across as best as I could.
If you *still* disagree with me and think the music didn't fit, that's totally fine! I just wanted to share my perspective of this scene.

I think the problem was the music itself, not even its lyrics. It was just heroic stuff while killing allies together with the people that turned said allies into titans. you are the only person I've ever heard complain about barricades, I find myself watching less and less of these because you get so angry and then rant about it, we get it, you don't like it, move on? you complained about it for 4 minutes, not really looking toward the finale cuz I know you'll have problems with music in there too :/ it is heroic, yes, they're also killing comrades, but they're also the strongest soldiers in the walls, they're saving a lot of people, its meant to be a heroic sacrifice. we haven't had our team fighting titans for a long time, it's a callback. and its very obvious no one in the show is being hopeful or trying to look cool while doing it, idk

I di dhave no problems with the finale, actually, I think. But 25-28 let me down a lot as we,, so you might skip those. Barricaseds was to happy and sucked here, sorry. It was just memberberries. I don't give a shit that they fight together again, it was meaningless. For example, Mikasa fights with Louise, yey. Does she care about Louise? No. It was jsut fanbait.

The music "Barricades" was used cause Attack on Titan normally has about 2 vocal tracks play during the show each season, and Mappa sucks ass so they just reused old ones cause they didn't re-hire Sawano.

Ah yes, let's cheer for Annie, a muss murderer who kills so she can go back to her daddy not caring for anybody else ( except maybe Armin ) , but Floch the guy who wants to save his country from destruction? Nah fuck him. You may not like him because he does unncecessary actions like beating shadis and becomes cocky to the point of annoyance but criticising him for his actions to avoid annihilation of his comrades is just showing people's double standards.

Annie changed for the better, Floch for the worst. How do people skip that part? Also, Floch had noone he cared about and did it for his ego, to be a hero "like Erwin". Annie had personal reasons, which were in the end love. I seriously can not understand how these two are even comparable other than on the most surface level analysis...?

@@storieswithstyle Annie changed? When? How? What? Saying things Floch is doing the things he does for his own ego is ridiculously wrong. After the trauma of almost dying in the charge he becomes extremist in a way that he thinks " to destroy our enemies, we must be ruthless as them " . Annie and Floch are both bad people but I'd say Floch is more sympathetic for wanting to defend his country than Annie who did things for her own selfish reasons.

@@adamturek210 Well, Floch is a N**zi, I do not see how that is sympathetic. At least Annie shows remorse, eevn during her onslaught in season 1, something Floch never does. Add to taht that Annie was still almost a child and floch is like 18 When he goes off. In the end, Floch wants to destroy the world for his short-sighted worldview and Annie decides to stake her life to safe it. I simply can not see how you can even come close to compare them?

@@storieswithstyle Thay may have been kids at the start ( which still doesn't change what they did ) but later there is no excuse for their actions. The next episode pretty much explains why I have no sympathy for annie specifically.
