I agree with you about Islam and thank you for your podcasts which I enjoy. As an Iranian, I can say most people in Iran are very different from the picture many people have in mind about them. I agree that 40 years ago they were more brain-washed, but nowadays, the number of jihadists and extremists is very few among Iranians, most of them are peaceful and they resent Hamas and their barbaric acts. Just wanted to mention that the Iranian government is different from the people. It has been many years that Iranian people have been fighting against the government that has taken them hostage for these years. Most of us actually feel deep sympathy towards Israelians who now have hostages in Hamas's hands and stand with them.

Judaism is where Islam gets its violence from. The torah and talmud also command the believers to murder and rape, and as we see both abrahamic zealots currently follow those orders- except harris only has concern for one of these groups of zealots

Do you think it's unpreventable that our countries will clash ? 😢. I have many Iranian friends from previous student exchanges, and am aware of the sentiment of the people vs the government. I love them very much. Some of them even tole me straight up Iran must eventually be dealt with. I can't imagine how painful it must to speak of your own country in such terms. Is there no hope of a peaceful change of regime in your opinion?

I wish I could say the same about Pakistan too. It has been state propaganda since 1980 in Pakistan it is default position of everyone. Our government and people are pretty much on same page. Just condemning H*m*s once and then focusing all attention on Is*ael alone is not enough. Why don't they call back Pakistanis who work in Qatar or any country that funds H*m*s? Why don't they boycott all Arab countries that support them? Why only boycotting Is*ael? Why was there criminal silence for first 3 to 4 days when attack began even though videos were circulating all over the internet? And millions of them only took to the street as soon as Israel began its action?
Edit: I just wanna say Sam Harris is one of the few intellectuals who sees how much religion has to do with all of it. I have ordered his book End of Faith which is supposed to arrive this week.

“…he does not mention Israeli settlements on the West..” How can Israel be a “colonizer” of its own land?
Under international law the principle of _Uti Possidetis Juris_ all of the land within Mandatory Palestine which was agreed to by the League of Nations in 1922 belongs to Israel.
Don’t understand that legal concept? There’s another way to view ownership.
When the 1948 war concluded with an armistice the Jordanian army controlled the West Bank, and two days later Jordan annexed the land. In 1967 Jordan attacked Israel, lost, and Israel took control of the land. While it is a violation of international law to acquire land as the aggressor in a war, it is not illegal to do so as a victim of aggression.

Very tidy indeed, easy because Sam fails to mention anything about the origins of Isreal, please watch 1948: Creation and Catastrophe, free on RUclips. And this is the way we all have been brainwashed into thinking Isreal is just defending itself. They have been the aggressor from the start and it was a bad deal that is finally falling apart completely. Learn the actual history, not the propaganda, and certainly not Sam's smart but myopic anti-jihadist line. As Sam himself here says, there are many contributing factors that make up a conflict, but he is not even allowing the basis for this conflict which begins with a Zionist campaign that was exactly terrorism from the get go, look up the 1946 bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in which 91 people were killed, it was organized by Menachem Begin as Israel’s prime minister. Begin was only the first of the continuous right wing Zionists who are frank exponents of Jewish supremacism and who continue to rule Israel right this minute. I have used Sam's waking up ap for 3 years now, and I will not be renewing it again. I love all the guests he has on, but I can find them elsewhere. I find his guided meditations to be as strident as his thinking on this very critical moment of crisis. He has a lot to offer in criticizing Jihadism and nothing to offer in criticizing this other "lunatic ideology" which the US government backs.

Only one thing I would disagree with you on. The real "leaders" of Hamas or Hezbollah do not live in Gaza or Syria, nor are they willing to sacrifice themselves for the cause of jihad. They live in Qatar or London, or Iran, a dozen places far, far from the fighting, where they can "call the shots" but suffer none of the consequences. They call for martyrdom of their followers, while living lives of luxury in their adopted homes. If those counties that hide these monsters were to seize their wealth and send them to Gaza to be part of the mass slaughter of its citizens, I wonder how long these calls for martyrdom would last.

@liberalegypt, I am an atheist, also from the Levant. You are absolutely correct, and I wish more people were aware of the agenda of world domination that Islam has always propagated. If one is a true believer of Islam, one has to embrace Jihad, and it's all downhill from there. I wish there were 2 billion non-religionists who understood that. There are a lot of westerners who are dealing with white guilt, who divide the world into oppressor and oppressed, just by color of skin or place of birth. I worked at the UN for several years in the peacekeeping and security area. The UN is system of Agencies and organisations, some of which do great work to foster cooperation between countries on issues as diverse as international post to nuclear safety. However, large parts of it that are concerned with peacekeeping, promoting security and the delivery of services to refuges, displaced people and those in fear of starvation of endemic illness have become highly politicised and deeply cynical and corrupt organisations. Anyone who has worked at the UN for any length of time knows that UNRWA is by far the most compromised Agency. I have no idea how many UNRWA staff in Gaza are active Hamas operatives - that is those who will fire a rocket or use a rifle or RPG. However, that huge numbers of the UNRWA staff in Gaza actively support Hamas's campaign of violence against Israel is well known.

But do you know why there is a surge in Gaza's population? It's turns out isn't caused by increase in Palestinian's birthrate, but its because they are refugees. Gaza residents are displaced people from other regions of Palestine such as Jerusalem, West Bank, or other villages that got ransacked and taken over by either israeli armed settlers or expelled by the IDF. This is well understood by us Israelis, Druze, Christians, Muslims, Beduins and Jewish Israelis but we are not great at explaining this. My family had lived in modern day North Israel for over 1000 years, as druze our ancestors teach us that they always lived along jews and until the ottoman empire where a muslim majority rule, there was fairly peaceful times and collaboration among jews, Christians, Druze.. it's islam subjection of all minorities to live us second class citizens that brought much of the suffering. @tamhiker1 let me tell you something, 1. I won't let anyone tell me how to self identify. Our druze community won't let overlord muslim arabs control how we see ourself. The title arabs was bestow on us a subjection/colonization. There is a term for Arab colonization.. it's called Arabization! I say no more! If the middle eastern jews managed to decolonize themselves from being looked as arabs! So will we the druze people.
      2. As an israeli Druze, jewish Israelis are not our enemy, our villages often are as close as 1-2 km from jewish villages and towns and they never attack us, they never force anything upon us, they live among us in peace and don't ask us to convert or be subjected to their way of lives the way muslims always trying to convert everyone to islam or arabization. The jews let us be, as they let the Christians and Muslims villages within 5 KM to us alone. This is why jews all over the world is 15 million, no history of oppressing and force converting others. How do you think islam expanded? Do you know basic islam history? Let alone arabazing native indigenous groups like druze by arabs. Zero respect to others, yet tell themselves their a religion of peace. Only peaceful Muslims I know live in israel and are good people with no desire to convert the rest of us to islam. The same cannot be said about fundamental islamist in Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, etc.
      3. I live in a town in North israel, where my ancestors have lived for over 1200 years, we live on a mountain overlooking Lebanon, when Islamist Hezballah shoot rockets into Israel that fly to our village, they don't consider that these rockets fall on Druze, chirstain, jewish or Muslim towns. And often the only thing between our homes and ancient towns built thousands of years ago being destoried by islamist rockets is israeli technology and israeli soliders risking their life to protect all of us. So weather israeli jews fully see me as an Arab or not, I can guarantee you they will 1. Not treat me differently to how they treat themselves. 2. Risk their own life to protect my home, my small children and my elderly parents. You need to understand that 99% of the media you are seeing online is either Qatari propaganda or American propaganda. On the ground, day to day, the reality is very different. 99% of minorities including Muslim beduins in israel, support Israel. And are as much part of israeli society as jewish.

@@tamhiker1 I misunderstood your last response. Those in the west bank are living horrifically. If you want to blame Israel for that then there really isn't much to discuss. I'll just point out that I don't know what Israel could do in light of the fact that the only goal of the "Palestinians" since 48 (and really, even before that) has been to rid the entire region of Jews. They have been pretty clear about that in words and in action. So what can Isreal possibly do? And by the way, my original comment was to yours about Israelis seeing the OP as an Arab and the implication that he was somehow subordinate. Its still a croc.

@@tamhiker1 I don't mean this to be condescending but is awareness of this conflict fairly new to you? The Pals have rejected two state solutions over and over again. As mentioned before, their goal is to rid the region of the Jews. Even when given the ability to govern themselves (there hasn't been a Jew in Gaza since 2006)....well, you saw the results in Gaza. They took the billions they received in foreign aid and instead of growing their economy and building infrastructure, they built terror tunnels and terrorists. The reason they live the way they do is twofold. 1. They are a certain security risk for Israel. If you can't see that then you are willfully ignoring reality. 2. Their ability to get responsible leadership in place has never come to fruition; beginning with Arafat and down through the years. "There will be peace when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us" - Golda Meir. Hasn't happened yet.

Sam…It’s a shame that you squandered an opportunity to inform your audience, and instead volunteered to be a propaganda, puppet for misinformation, provided by a foreign government. The right side of history is never on the side of the oppressor. without understanding the imbalance of power, the illegal status of Israel’s 75 year occupation of Palestinian territory, and an understanding of centuries.
You need to recalibrate your moral compass. Justifying the murder of children and an absurdly high civilian death rate as “urban wear warfare”, is straight from the Zionist propaganda talking points. Shame on you. Suggesting that this Hass to do with religion is proof you have absolutely no understanding of hundreds and nearly 1000 years of amicable relations between the Muslim and Jewish communities. Zionism is a colonial political ideology. If you don’t believe me do your research on what the original name was. Judaism is a beautiful religion that is intentionally conflated with a barbaric political ideology to insulated from criticism and accountability. Like all humans, Palestinians have the right to live free or die trying. international law afford this right to all humans, including Palestinians. Over 13,000 children have been murdered with our taxpayer dollars, over 7000 women have been murdered and over 80% of Palestinian civil infrastructure has been demolished. The suggestion that this has anything to do with a clash of civilizations and religious ideology is laughable. Kindergarten level research would have proven that even Christian and Jewish Palestinians are part of the resistance movement Determined to end the 75 year oppression of Palestinians. They will live free or die trying. In case you forgot, Mandela was also a terrorist, according to the apartheid state, trying to discredit him. the truth will prevail and as always, the right side of history will be on the side of the oppressed… Not the oppressor. Wake up.

Here’s Kyle Reese describing the motivation of the Terminator to Sarah Connor: “It can’t be bargained with, it can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop - EVER - until you are dead.”
Replace “you are” with “Israel is” and voilà, we have a perfect analogy. Is Hamas a Terminator? Is the Terminator Hamas? Either way, Reese’s description of the four key factors of the Terminator’s motivation - (1) it can’t be bargained with, (2) it can’t be reasoned with, (3) it has neither pity, remorse, nor fear, and (4) it won’t stop until [Israel] is dead - are as true for Hamas as they are for a fictional remorseless killing machine.

It’d be interesting for Sam to discuss how, perhaps, many people can’t fully comprehend the threat of Jihad because they can’t allow in the heart of darkness, the base, bloodthirsty, demonic, savage, nihilistic psychological realms inhabited by Jihadists, can’t understand that “death cult” actually means death cult and isn’t some phrase meant to shock or boost a point. As Bob Dylan said, “See life from a fair garden and everything looks cheerful. Climb to a higher plateau and you'll see plunder and murder.” Does some portion of general anti-war sentiment come from an inability to have “negative capability”, to hold war and its horrors as sometimes inevitable, that practicing non-violence or being nice or fair cannot overcome real evils (I once believed like this)? Life has much light and so much beauty, yes. But there’s no doubt a shadow side, which’s mostly been Integrated and expressed by the poet, artist, or mystic, who fully accept angels AND demons without judgement. In order to really understand the reality Sam’s describing, is it necessary, on some level, to personally encounter some of the uncontrollable chaotic violent side, that heart of darkness within us all? Does this account for why people, notoriously afraid to feel things deeply, can’t wrap their mind properly around the phenomena of Jihad, and instead cling to a more superficial and palatable reading of currents events?

IMHO and with a background in child psychology (studies), teaching, professional astrology leading to karmic astrology and then onto Buddhism, my answer to you is "yes," it is necessary to "shine light on" our Shadow side, that is, what we do not want to face about ourselves (we also have in our Shadow good things, but this is not the discussion here). I quote Jung : "When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate." This happens on an individual level and a collective level and because we live in the world of duality, there is good and evil and most of us are somewhere on this linear spectrum. I dare not write more here, but psychology, Jung and Jungian thought, art (poetry, writing, painting etc ), astrology (karmic astrology particularly), mysticism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hermeticism etc... show the way. I wrote about a linear spectrum, but our spiritual evolution is spiral (just to complicate things). Would love to write more and what you have written is absolutely true. @PhenomenalWorld

I totally agree with Sam about jihadism. However, as an Iranian, I find parts of this episode about Iran a little unfair.
In the Iran-Iraq war (which was imposed on the people by two maniacs, Khomeini and Saddam Hossein), Iranian people who went to defend the country were NOT suicide bombers. When you use the phrase "suicide bomber" in the context of jihad, it implies terrorism.
When people go to war to defend their country, they are not necessarily committing jihadism.
I love Sam and he's one of the people who's had great influence in my life. But I have to say, after this episode, I'm a little bit disappointed!

@@solehthesandmonkey I didn't say people didn't believe in martyrdom. And I agree that Islam is to blame. Nobody's defending Islam here. But you have to make a distinction between defending your country and depicting acts of terrorism. When Iranian people went to defend the country, it was NOT because they wanted to be martyrs. It was because they felt an obligation to defend their country, as people should! But at the same time, they believed that if you die for your country (and of course for Islam), they would go to heaven! While this was a stupid reason to feel better, it was not the reason they went to war! It's just a bad argument to imply Iranian people loved going to war to become martyrs!
However, people who commit jihadism, actually do want to spread Islam by force and die for it because they believe they will go straight to heaven.
There's a huge distinction here which was not made in Sam's podcast episode!

    • @solehthesandmonkey

@@ArsamTajabadi the point Sam was making and that I reiterated was that it is because of the religous beliefs of some Iranians that children were being used as mine fodder. Can you imagine the Israelis or Americans or British sending their children into battle? Much less tied together with rope to traipse through a minefield. No one is saying all Iranians sent their children or that all Iranians hold these beliefs about martyrdom. But at that time, in Iran, mothers allowed their children to go to their certain deaths. It is an uncomfortable and horrifying truth. Islam is a putrid belief system which enables and supports these actions and we should not shy away from that.

Thanks for the post Sam. One thing that appears to be bolstering the support (often blind from what I can tell) of Hamas and other terrorist actors by people specifically in the west, is what appears to be an increase over the last decade of anti-west sentiment. There are people who seem to be quick to support anything that is at least perceived to be anti-west or anti-American foreign policy. It has me questioning if people who claim to be in support of Palestine are genuinely in support of the civilian population or are actually just anti-west.

I have a few issues with Sam’s argument here. Although I’m firmly in the camp of religious extremism especially Jihad is non sensical and fundamentally destructive and dangerous. Many studies have shown that many of these Jihad movements and extremest group flourish and these idea of martadem are more palatable in conditions when a population is pushed to the edge. If we assume Islam much like many religions is a cult and we know from multiple studies that people are far more likely to be convinced by a cult and ignore that obvious red flags when they are in a vulnerable position in their life. Hence even if I agree with 90% of what Sam is saying it still makes the war counter productive in terms of extremist production non just in Palestine but the whole of the Muslim world. It’s the same reason we saw an increase in religious fundamentalism after the US’ war in Iraq

Sam's argument is surprisingly obtuse here and amounts to 'Israel is good because Hamas is bad'. He cherry picks his facts. And the blood libel comment was on par with Ben Affleck's attacks on him. He ignores A) many Israeli top officials stating they want and intend ethnic cleansing B) it is largely the west restraining Israel at all C) declaring all of Jerusalem theirs, dividing the west bank with settlements, thousands, these past few years, is considered an act of war D) those settlers regularly attack Palestinians and aren't prosecuted for it. D) Israel also gets free passes other nations don't get, with more support from the west due to lobbying and feeling bad over what happened during the holocaust. The Hamas need to be destroyed but "we are gonna put them on a diet" (quote) starvation and ten thousand kids dead, with videos showing unjustified strikes causing mass casualties, is still criminal.

And even if they drop the martyrdom, they clearly want to rule and subject everyone to Islam. What happens when they can’t? They will resort to the same tactics. I don’t know, it’s easy to cry fault, but now find the solution.

So also the Egyptian Arafat that died as a very wealthy man not produced anything than destruction his whole life. These people thrive in hard situations af see no reason to elevate their people from poverty as its risk of losing their power.

I think that people will always find a reason to blame others for whatever they feel going wrong in their lives or around the world. What happened for decades is that the UN, the Arab countries and the Palestinians themselves are being treated as they are incapable to act differently or to care for themselves. I don't know if you saw the kind of material being taught in their schools- even in the so called moderate Palestinian authority- they are still paying money to the families of terrorists that ended the lives of Jews. There is a lot to fix from the Israeli government (s) that's for sure- but this is not an excuse to become a raging fundamentalist. Just see what happened yesterday at a Chicago ELEMENTARY school.

It feels like you only speak to people that agree with you on this topic, which is keeping you locked into this short-sighted and dangerous perspective. It's been well-documented that Israel has committed ethnic cleansing in Palestine since the 1940s - read the book "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" by Israeli historian, Ilan Papé.
There's also much evidence to suggest that such oppression creates fertile ground for radical groups like Hamas to form. Israel helped fund Hamas in order to sow division amongst the Palestinians, who, for a long time, were relatively peaceful compared to the Israelis. Where is any of that information in your perspective?

@sassansalamian3428 -- He addressed the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in the formation of Israel and pointed out that numerous modern states came into existence through similar acts. He also pointed out that overt oppression does not necessarily lead to this kind of violence (or any at all) and that the distinction in ideologies is meaningful in understanding the behavior. For example, the East Timorese (Catholics) were subject to an Indonesian (mostly Muslim) invasion and attempted integration from 1975-1999 and they did resist militarily, but they did not r*pe or murder Indonesian civilians in West Timor as an act of rebellion. The example that Sam Harris gives is of the Tibetans whose most violent act of rebellion is to burn themselves alive, never mind negative actions against their Han invaders.
We can accept, for the sake of argument, all of Ilan Pape's claims of ethnic cleansing, Gabor Mate's claims about Palestinian oppression, etc. and none of this would sufficiently explain Hamas' response UNTIL we add in their religio-political ideology.

@@oremfrien Ethnic cleansing rhetoric has existed since the founding. It never ceased. It exists in political parties. Popular political parties. Parties that predate Hamas by a decade. The same rhetoric that people claim comes from Hamas was literally written into the current ruling party's founding document. Extremism breeds extremism. The more extreme, the more extreme the pushback.
You can see this sort of thing happen throughout their history. One people push and the other push back with something more extreme. You can see it in what is happening now. You can say Hamas is extreme but not without looking at the extremism within Israel and the ruling party. It's difficult to not see the incitement in a statement like, "between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty". It predates Hamas by a decade and predates their radicalization by much longer than that. This same rhetoric predates the written version, of course.
