I owned one of these cars for 10 years. I drove it hard (as I do all cars) and it was HUGE FUN to drive. Here is a hint. ALL Italian cars are HUGE fun to drive; no matter how cheap or how expensive. The Italians have a feel for feel that NOBODY else in the world has. I just saw the new version that came out in the Geneva show. It looks too much like a MX-5 (which shares the platform), but it does have a Fiat engine and transmission so I am sure the fun factor will be alive and well in the new car.
I have a new 124 Spider and I can say, after 20,000 miles, it's a BLAST to drive. (and I'm very happy they put a horn in it that sounds like a REAL car!).
I have a 77 that I bought in 78 and love it the same or more as when I first bought it. For 20 years it was my only car and was every bit as reliable as any car ever built in the 1970s. In 1998 I bought a bigger car because my wife wanted a more comfortable car so I didn't drive it as much. Now with 148,000 miles it has had only a couple of minor repairs and still runs fantastic.
