A Retrospective on Godzilla (1998)

  • We all have those movies we remember from when we were younger that we think back on with fond memories, regardless of the quality of the film itself, and for me
one of those movies has always been the 1998 version of Godzilla. I've mentioned in the past that this was one of my personal favorite guilty pleasures and I figured
I'd revisit the film and actually analyze it for the sake of the channel having something different for a change of pace. After viewing the film again,
I have a lot to say about it and thought you guys might like to hear my thoughts. When this thing came out it was advertised all over the place and a lot of kids like
myself were super excited to see a new version of Godzilla, with the Special Effects of Jurassic Park. Now back in that time of my life, I would stay up late some
nights and watch TNT's MonsterVision, which would show a ton of Godzilla movies every now and again. These old Godzilla movies got me really interested in the series
as a kid and I can remember getting a ton of Godzilla toys from the Japanese Heisei movies being made in the 1990's that same year the American remake came out. I
thought Godzilla was cool! He was a big dinosaur that smashed cities and fought other monsters. Nothing more and nothing less really. When it came time for me to
watch the new movie in theaters, I left pretty happy with what I had seen. Now nearly 20 years later, revisiting it from a critical standpoint is pretty interesting.
A lot of Godzilla fans seem to hate on this movie for being so radically different from the old Godzilla movies they used to love from the 60s and 70s. I sort of
understand why, but at the same time I don't find that as a valid argument when discussing something that was inherently made to be Americanized...especially in the
way this movie presents itself as somewhat of a satire.
These are my quick thoughts on Godzilla 1998 and I do not show the Godzilla 1998 Trailer and just give a Godzilla Review or more like a Godzilla 1998 Review with some of the Godzilla 1998 Commercial stuff from this Godzilla Reimagining featuring the Revenge of Godzilla with a Remake of Godzilla back in the day. The movie has the infamous Godzilla Dies Scene and would probably have been on Godzilla Monster Vision today in a Retrospective of Godzilla but than we must remember the weird Godzilla P Diddy song and why some people say Godzilla 1998 Sucks but that Godzilla 1998 Reaction is a bit forced and the Godzilla 1998 Scene I always loved was the one with Godzilla 1998 Fire which is better known as the Godzilla 1998 Fire Scene from the film. Not to mention the Godzilla 1998 Eggs and the Godzilla 1998 Babies or the animated shows Godzilla the Monster Wars and other keywords I could tag.

I met the actor that was in the Gojira suit in the first Japanese films while seeing the newest Godzilla film opening night in Japan. He sat about 5 seats down from me in the theater and clapped and cheered. It was a great experience, and may he rest in peace now.

Godzilla 98 and The Lost World were definitely movies I loved watching when I was a kid. Re-watching them now, I see the flaws and gripes people have with them and agree, but damit do they still give me that 90s nostalgic feeling. All I can think of when I watch them is how many times I rewound those VHS tapes.

Dude. 100% agree with you. It’s not a great movie but it is entertaining. Honestly, I feel like the 2014 Godzilla movie portrays the character of Godzilla better, and overall is the better movie, but this one is genuinely more entertaining. I have to be in a certain mood to watch the 2014 Godzilla because it is so long and you don’t see Godzilla that much. At least this movie gives you consistent action.
Also the animated series that spawned from this movie is actually pretty great.

honestly, I really only liked the movie because of the "Jurassic Park" style you mentioned. because back in 2002, I had seen all three Jurassic Park films (and was desperate for a forth to come out) so Dinosaurs where heavy on my mind, when my dad brought home a movie for is to watch called "Godzilla" I was overly excited that the movie felt kinda like a installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, (I used to do fantasy battles between baby Godzillas and Velociraptors) we still have that original DVD that my dad bought all those years ago. In the bonus features there was a pair of trailers for the 1991 and 1992 Godzilla films. that was when I first learned about the other Godzilla films that had been made (I thought the rubber suits looked so cheesy) , so I really have to thank Godzilla (1998) for introducing me to one of histories most famous fictional monsters.

End of The Lost World meets an episode of Friends is a PERFECT way to describe this movie. Lol. And looking at the time it was made and the way Hollywood is. I could easily see that description being tossed around in early board meetings about the movie. “Jurassic Park meets friends with a little bit of Independence Day thrown in there.”

The Zilla classification has always worked for me. The problem the film had was being called GODzilla, if it was just called Zilla and like you said if the tone of the movie was more consistent than this could have been a classic. The scenes that work, and hold up do so magnificently.

Definitely a guilty (but not really guilty) pleasure of mine, too! I actually first saw this movie because it happened to be on TV and I noticed Matthew Broderick was in it and I was a big fan of his for a while when I was a teenager. I remember thinking that Matthew Broderick plus epic giant moster was one of the best things ever lol. Even then I never took it seriously, and the awkward "human plot" side of it was hilarious to me, in a "so cheesy and terrible it's good" kinda way. I love "monster movies" of all varieties, so I became immune to low-quality CGI effects pretty early on. That's always made it super easy to just sit back and enjoy the '98 Godzilla film and basically take it at face value; I'm fairly easy to please so long as a movie has cool creatures and action and explosions xD I mean, I love a good plot and characterizations, etc. but the more simple (and seemingly stupid, at least to some) movies tend to be my go-to feel-good favorites :)

This is a totally guilty pleasure for me. It came out when I was still in primary, and for someone who grew up with the Jurassic Park films, this is something I can put on and just laugh my way through it. It's popcorn entertainment, plain and simple.
I'm not a die-hard Godzilla fan. So I can't see what all the fuss is about. But Godzilla 1998 is a spin back to better times in my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    • @yuyaricachimuel555

The fuss is from Godzilla fans who mainly know the source material and felt like this movie has no respect for it (which they’re pretty much right about, because the director blatantly said he never had respect for it in the first place), but that’s a whole other discussion and I won’t burden with it...

The plot is pretty much the standard Solo Godzilla formula but with a 90s American twist to It.
If Godzilla wasn't killed or killed so easily it would probably have had better reception at least from fans.
And this is the first I've ever heard of the humans being copies of the 'Friends' characters and it's true as well.

The sounds effects from this movie are the silver lining in my dreams. I still think about a fleet of fishing trawlers getting dragged away all the time 20 years later. That wasn't cool?

I remember watching this as a kid. My dad asked me what dinosaur it was and my brother and I were debating on what it was. Then when I heard the military say "Godzilla" I realized that it was Godzilla. My reaction was, "this isn't what Godzilla looks like". But I still enjoyed it either way.

I love the content on your channel. I remember going to see this when I was 12 or 13 in the theater and had fun watching it. I had never seen a Godzilla movie before and just enjoyed it for a big dumb popcorn flick. I agree when Godzilla was going against the army was probably where it was at its best. I never thought about the human characters being like a Friends episode, but man are you straight on point on that. I still enjoy it as a dumb action movie to this day and just wish Godzilla had eaten Siskel and Ebert. Lol

This film got me into Godzilla and as a kid this movie was awesome. As an adult well I agree it is deeply flawed but that doesn't bother me, in fact I never looked at it in a satirical way but that makes a lot of sense. I get why hardcore Godzilla fans don't like this film (also I can respect everyone's opinion) but for me it's my favorite out of the series and a fantastically fun guilty pleasure. I'm into filmmaking and I am in Montclair State University (and all the film school's on campus) and in the future I wanna remake this film and give it a badass approach with good and fun characters with a good amount of destruction.

I’ve been a huge fan of the original Godzilla and honestly this movie wasn’t really that bad. I actually really liked it. I’m pretty sure if it had a different name, people would be praising the hell out of it, but since it’s named Godzilla, it’s still getting hated on to this day...

I’ve always enjoyed this flick. It was goofy and a little derivative but I was never bored. And it is true that people taking issue with the outlandish aspects or even the overtly earnest ones should watch the original films before passing judgment. They are filled with committed super serious moments and also some of the goofiest shit ever seen in a monster movie. Good video.

I am a die hard fan of the Japanese Godzilla, but I love the 1998 Godzilla. I think they did it just fine. Also I am fine with Godzilla not fighting anything in the movie. I mean this is a re-boot of Godzilla 1954. I also am fine with the way Godzilla 1998 died. It gave us something different, and that is why I love it.

It definitely was a cousin to the Jurassic family kinda feel. & I would say the look of Godzilla or “Zilla” was beautiful. In a way a bit sexier less bulky. I wish there was a sequel I feel like that definitely had a great chance to be a decent film tbh. Yeah the cartoon was fun but we’ll never know...

I really loved this movie as a kid! I remember being so excited for it, and my parents dropped a huge surprise bomb on me when one night they said we were going to grab fast food for dinner and ended up pulling into our local drive in movie theater and buying our "ticket" for the movie. I got the vhs for either my birthday or Christmas when it came out, and got a bunch of the toys. Now, I look back on it with fond memories, but I don't love it as much anymore. I've grown to seriously dislike movies that shoehorn in human sub-plots and ESPECIALLY romances. Like, gross, stop sucking face, get back to the monster/dinosaur! Also, man that commercial took me way back. I loved that little taco bell dog, and miss him.

This is pretty good. I love your retrospective of this movie, and I do mostly agree with your statements. As a Godzilla movie, it sucks ass, but as just a dumb fun, movie it's not that bad. Even I have nostalgic memories of this movie and I didn't really think that hard of it to compare it to Godzilla. Yes, like everyone else, I understand how terrible it is compared to the toho and legendary Godzilla films, but just looking at it as its own thing, it's pretty interesting and entertaining to watch. Certainly better than godzilla's revenge (I recommend watching that awful movie if you're on steroids). Anyways, I do like this retrospective view on this movie and I hope you do more of these, i wanna see you do a retrospective of Godzilla 2014 and the toho movies.

A lot of people don't seem to like this version of the Godzilla creature, let alone the movie. I personally don't mind this one. In fact, I think I might like Zilla slightly more than the regular Godzilla. To draw parallels to Jurassic Park, if Godzilla (like the one in the 2014 movie) is like the T. Rex of the Kaiju, Zilla (Godzilla 1998) is the Velociraptor. It's even something they expanded upon in the follow-up cartoon series.
