Might save the format, but also might end up needing to be banned for making it worse. Something to consider is that you can play all your free spells turn one, getting out early moxes and the like, then play the bauble to stop your opponent from doing the same. Turns the meta into a coinflip based on who goes first a not insignificant amount of the time.
Not saying it will do this, of course, just that its a possibility. Things like it have happened before.

@@diegoperezsommariva2509 Perhaps, but maybe not. It depends on the relative efficiency of trying to remove the bauble vs trying to do the bauble thing faster then your opponent.
Basically it depends on how the nash equilibrium of a chaotic system shakes out past its predictability horizon, which is alot of very fancy math words for "we can't predict the future, so we don't know." So, it might do a variety of things, but it is a variety of things, and predicting which one is going to be a matter of luck, not certainty.
I doubt it will be banned in Modern. But it's 100% getting restricted in Vintage; you literally play all your Moxen, then play this. Now your opponent can't play their Moxen. Basically, in Vintage, this gives a ridiculous advantage to whoever goes first.
+1 here that this card is on the watchlist from day 0. Maybe the odds are more positive than negative for modern, but it looks like every single deck will have to use it either main deck or SB. And dodging artifact removal for “1 mana, draw a card” is super strong

As a lantern player, this is a godsend 😂
There is a Wizard type creature, Academy Loremaster, that makes spells cost 2 more to cast, which might add a wrinkle to zero costing. And it is symmetrical, as long as each player decides to trigger it.
Finally, some good and simple card desgin and even at a low rarity. Will be running this in commander on princible. 👌

Plot only appears in one competitive deck in Modern, so it's not getting completely taken out back 😅
I already proxies it to throw it in all my cEDH decks free counters and fast mana deck until you want it is insane for just 1 colorless

I have been trying this out in my boros delirium deck as a better avacyn scroll
Oh, this is a must-have in ANY Legacy deck that doesn't play free spells, and still be present in a few of these decks too just to be another tool against even faster combo decks.
Oh, and every deck playing Urza's Saga will have one in the maindeck or at least the side board, even if sometimes it's a detriment to them, just to give them a chance against certain decks.
Why? Chalice of the Void is strictly better, unless it's a dead card.
@@LibertyMonkChalice is often worse. This counters all the Force spells, all the evoke elementals, and most of Affinity. That’s far from meaningless.
@LibertyMonk chalice is cmc not mana spent. Chalice on 0 doesn't stop omniscience atraxa. Boble does
@@LibertyMonk Chalice specifically checks for CMC. At 0, it doesn't stop evoking, discover/cascade, storm, and affinity, but it stops something like ornithopter, lotus petal, and mishra's bauble.
This is able to stop everything listed for a single mana.

This card is about to be the most played card in modern almost every deck will have this in the sideboard
Lantern got a much needed buff!
Kinda funny that against this, having to pay 1 mana for an affinity card is better than getting the full discount.

Pulled this one at the prerelease. Wasn't great for a sealed/draft event, but will definitely be good in constructed.

So a colorless 1 CMC that utterly hoses the mechanics of Storm/copy, Suspend, Cascade, Plot, Evoke, Affinity, Hideaway, and all zero CMC spells.
1 CMC makes it fetched by Trinket Mage.
This is now an auto-include in every commander deck.
There is no playtesting before release in M:tG anymore.
and urzas saga, and a handful of other tutors. seems easy enough to find in game, even without a full playset
it doesn't work against storm, storm copies go into the stack without being cast.
Most of the time copying spells doesn't require you to cast them, so that strategy is safe.
@@eerie_shroom8500 Wait what? If Storm copies and others aren't cast before going onto the stack then that means copying spells and the Storm mechanic itself doesn't increase the Storm count.
Say if I am running Melek in commander and cast an instant from the top of my library, with Chandra Hope's Beacon in play making two copies, that means the Storm Count is 1 and my opponent would have to pay full price for Mindbreak Trap, and also Flusterstorm would do nothing to help.

I think in 1v1, it only matters if you're on the play and just makes you stronger. In modern, if you're on the draw, it just gets eaten by Grief.

It's a great tech card because you can always just use it to draw, so it's not such a dead card in the wrong match-ups.

This seems cracked in any place you play Urza’s Saga, if not modern this definitely seems like it’ll see play in legacy with all the free stuff there.
As someone with void mirrors in my sideboard, this is so much better

Honestly might play this card in commander too. Some cascade and discover crap is getting out of control.
Doesn't trip discover up as much, since they have the option to just put it in their hand. Also doesn't help if they spin into something that can't be countered (like, say, if they have Chimil, the Inner Sun).

Feels like the meta can adapt to this one though. It's only a good card when free spells are everywhere. Astro was just straight up good as it immediately replaced it self while fixing your mana

It’s not like everyone is guaranteed to always draw this on their first turn. Also I’m pretty sure there are some cheap artifact removal spells out there. So no it’s not overpowered

Yes, but Bauble is half the cost, can be cashed in for a card and can be tutored with Urza's Saga.
Kinda wanna bust this out against pubstompers in commander 😂
This card only creates "fair" Magic scenarios, go for it!!
It’s neat to hold onto. At least for now. But my table doesn’t really get much value outside of running against a single Golos

Lol no. Mox opal's biggest problem was that you can cast a second one, sac the tapped one you control to legend rule and essentially have a new mox opal. If that was fixed then sure.
so does this work against spells like reanimate where you ou bring stuff from the graveyard? because otherwise it seems black green is gonna be top tier
Putting a creature into play is not the same as casting the creature.
So to answer your question, no. (Unless the reanimation spell was cast for free. Like the Flashback cost on Dread Return)

i know this is supposed to be a modern set but i'm more excited to try this out as a safety piece in cedh/edh lol
In Singleton formats, this might be OK as the 3rd or 4th copy of this effect. Modern etc already have Chalice of the Void and Void Mirror.
@@LibertyMonk it'll still see crazy play in modern, and it will most likely be an auto include in many cedh decks unless it gets stopped turn one too often but even then clearing up removal and free counters early is also really good for decks that don't have as much protection
Honestly it’s sad to think a bauble is the best idea wizards has had in a while. Unfortunately I think this is just necessary in every deck right now. It’s akin to drannith magistrate.

It doesnt further your gameplan though, if it were two mana i doubt it would be good enough
The 2 mana version doesn't see play, and the 0 mana version already exists in sideboards everywhere as a 2-of.
@@LibertyMonk my point is that a player should invest more resources for being able to completely block a Cascade or Discover deck, which for it's nature and design has inevitably big drops like Maelstrom Wanderer. If they make an artifact that constantly counter the other player's counterspells I'll be okay with this, but if they ever did something like that it would probably cost more than one
It needs to be or else it's useless. That's power creep in a nutshell.
Because you need to be able to counter a turn 1 mana crypt or youre way behind.

I just built a deck that plays around with Plot and this seems like all my friends are gonna play it just because they hate it.

They still technically fill different roles. Void Mirror might still be worthwhile depending on how the Eldrazi decks build their mana base.
@@attackoncardboard One mana spells are infinitely better than 2 mana spells. Simply because when you're on the play, a 1 mana spell can't be Griefed or countered (in most cases).
Modern players won't even play Void Mirror. But this one can cantrip, so maybe?
It's also half the cost and can easily be played on turn one!
Chalice of the Void exists. The only upside to this garbage is it cantrips if your opponent isn't running good cards.
@@LibertyMonk Chalice of the Void doesn't stop the free spells, like Grief, Force of Vigor, and others that are supposedly ruining Modern. If those players would just play Void Mirror instead of whining and complaining, maybe other cards wouldn't need to banned. But I'm guessing that you're one of the whiners.

@@LibertyMonk Chalice of the Void - Whenever a player casts a spell with *mana value* equal to the number of charge counters on Chalice of the Void, counter that spell.
Chalice checks for cost, not how much you paid.

At least with Discover you can put the card into your hand.

While I know Commander is casual and you play it how you want to. "Officially" Commander doesnt have a sideboard, so Karn can only fetch stuff from Exile 😅

@@attackoncardboard Even have a deck you have different packages you put together before the game to combine that changes the dynamic. I have friends who spend way to much money, i.e. all the good cards, so I have to be crafty in my budget decks.
Hopefully they're informed of the official rules and this is all something discussed in Rule 0.
This is exactly why "Wish" cards aren't played in Competitive, no sideboard.

I'm still kinda new to mtg, but I think I know the answer, would this stop spells that create tokens? For example skelvs hive?
Once Skrelv's Hive is in play, it has a triggered ability to create those tokens. It's not affected by the Bauble. Check out my video with Palpatine in the Thumbnail to learn about Activated abilities and triggered abilities 🙂

Key takeaway:
A spell is a card (or a copy of a card) that moves from one zone (library, hand, graveyard, exile etc) to the stack. If the spell was 'cast' (copies of spells are not always cast) and no mana was spent to do so, the Bauble will counter it.
Triggered abilities are denoted by "when", "whenever" or "at" 🙂
@@attackoncardboard Yea, he was thinking it would stop my Mondrak, glory dominus and skrelvs hive/ white mono deck. And everything I looked at was like "no, its a ability not a spell".

Yes and no. Void mirror is still good against colourless decks that cant produce coloured mana.
Colourless decks can still play into Bauble without issue.

Costs twice as much, can't be found with Urza's Saga, can't trade it in for a card when you're in a match up where it does nothing. Has loop holes to get around its ability.

Chalice on 0 doesn't stop the vast majority of spells I mentioned.
Chalice checks for Mana Cost, not how much you paid to cast it.

As a first sliver player, I hate this card.
No, because Nadu laughs at it.
No. You are still shields down against grief unless you have it in the opening hand, and are on the play, making it slightly worse against grief than leyline of sanctity. On top of that, we already had artifacts, and even creatures, with similar effects. Up to this point, none of them have seen substantial play, despite the number of free spells floating around. This might be the most mana efficient version of this type of effect, but it gets exiled by leyline binding pretty hard if need be, and can be easily targeted by the artifact removal packages of the common sideboard. I'd say it will see play, but only on the play against grief strategies, or control decks running cards like force of negation. It might be viable against eldrazi, too, but they still get those nasty cast triggers, so it isn't an ideal answer.
It hoses affinity hard. No bauble, no petal, no ornithopter etc
@jacobpearlman7451 sure, but so does chalice, and that does it for 0 mana, without preventing you from casting evoke elementals.

If it's not the OG emrakul that can't be countered then yes. Emrakul's cast trigger won't be countered by this though
