  • Vlog Ep.50 - Big Algonquin Canoe Trip - Day 4 - The Giant Portage! (4K) This video is about the 4th day of our canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park's interior, as we paddle up Big Crow Lake to the biggest portage of the entire trip, taking on a giant 3.75km trek through the forest. We then paddle a short while on Hogan Lake, leading us to our second portage of the day, before finally arriving at Lake La Muir and finding our campsite for the night, where we enjoy an evening by the campfire. We've also been filming select, interesting moments throughout each day of the trip with a 360° 4K VR camera (link to separate 360° video from the day below), and today's shots are from our paddle into Lake La Muir, as well as the relaxing campfire at our campsite on the lake! After the trip, we'll also post an unabridged version of all the 360° clips for those who would like to enjoy a longer VR experience in the park :)
    __
    There are several different ways to enjoy the 360° VR video linked below:
    1. Select desktop web browsers like Google's Chrome, or Firefox will allow you to scroll through the 360° VR video by clicking / dragging the image on the screen left, right, up and down, so you can look around in the environment.
    2. View the 360° VR video on your smartphone or tablet using RUclips's Mobile app (a free app on iOS or Android devices), which will allow you to pan and tilt your phone around in 3D space, almost as if it's a window in front of you that you can look through to see the VR environment around you - the RUclips Mobile app uses your device's internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking... which is really cool!
    3. View the 360° VR video through Google's Cardboard app (a free app on iOS and Android devices), and a relatively inexpensive head-mounted VR viewer, equipped with lenses designed to help you focus on your smartphone's screen. The app creates a stereoscopic version of the 360° video we filmed, which you can then put into a head-mounted VR viewer, which allows you to look around and almost feel like you're there inside the VR environment. The app uses your phone's own internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking. Please note, your VR experience with this method depends on your phone's resolution and the quality of the VR headset you purchase. I personally own a "Merge 360°" VR headset which works with a range of different phones, and sells online at B&H Photo for around $79 CDN / $59 US, though you can find inexpensive VR viewers for as little as $15 - $20 by searching online. There are many to choose from - you generally get what you pay for though, and more expensive models will typically be more comfortable to wear for extended periods, or come equipped with more built-in adjustments for precisely aligning with your eye. Before buying any VR viewer, please ensure it will fit your phone. You may also want to enjoy this method while wearing stereo headphones.
    4. View the 360° VR video through an Oculus Rift, or HTC Vive, which are much more expensive VR devices with their own software built-in.
    Today's 360° video clips are moments are from our paddle into Lake La Muir, as well as the relaxing campfire at our campsite on the lake! Before you check it out, please don't forget to like, share or comment on today's vlog and let us know what you think! Thanks! It really helps us to create more content and moments like this :) ...today's 360° VR video link: • BIG ALGONQUIN CANOE TR...

    My wife and I moved overseas to Borneo 7 years ago and this series makes me want to move back to Ottawa so I can enjoy Algonquin's sights and sounds again. Thanks for these truly superb videos and making me homesick for the first time in a long time. Cheers.

    Great work as usual! I love Julia's spontaneous singing and I am glad you didn't hurt yourself on the log. Here's a short but cautionary tale. Two summers ago as I was setting up my food hang, I stepped on a rotten log. Within seconds, I was swarmed by some angry, threatened wasps. Now I avoid walking on rotten or semi-rotten logs. I' was so glad that the stings were minor.

    Nice! I did the 5200 meter from DIckson when I was about 16 years old, carrying one of those wilderness battleship Grummans that weighed 78 pounds. Those longer portages will put you through the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance), followed by the five stages of portage grief (pain, despair, resignation, submission, numbness).

    I get excited when I see new vids from you two. They're so uplifting with your positive personalities and cheery banter. Your skills in filming natural beauty are 2nd to none. As for long portages, as tri-athletes you understand the rewards from hard work. I'm slightly handicapped and I sweat all day in rehab for increments. But I sleep well at night knowing I'm better today than I was yesterday. :-)

    Hey Chris. Been following your channel for a while now and have to say you are making some of the best outdoor content on youtube. period. You have a true gift for film making and editing. Even better, you and Julia give off such an infectious air of positivity, fun, and happiness at being together and at enjoying the outdoors. It's such a rare quality to find on youtube and a real treasure. Only wish you'd find a way for the fans to give something back! Maybe some affiliate links or a Patreon? Got to be able to afford that next latest and greatest gimbal!

    That 3.7k into Hogan was a doozy! I remember taking a nice long swim in Hogan after that to cool down. I almost didn't recognize the grassy end of Hogan and portage into La Muir. Whenever we've gone through there the grasses were taller than we were, and it looks like they extended the dock on the La Muir side back through the mucky area. I also didn't recognize the campsite, which we've stayed at as well, because the water was so high. There's a nice beach when its lower. Thanks for the different look at familiar territory! As always beautiful footage, great editing, and you two rock!

    Just a thought. On long portage's we have found that if the person not carrying the canoe grabs the stern and guides it it makes it much easier for person who has to carry it, because they can walk with both arms down. It works for us anyway. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

    Hi C&J really enjoying watching this trip and your other trips. After watching your film and KCHappycamper I sought out somewhere near me that hires canoes and took my son for a short trip for his birthday (7) and I'm happy to say he loved it and can't wait to go again he also watches your films with me (when he can sit still long enough😄) so I'm now in the process of looking into getting our own canoe to explore some of the other rivers/canals nearby I'm looking at 16ft 3 to 4 seats as my little girl wants to come but not yet she wants to be able to swim better (her choice not mine lol) she's only 4 but so headstrong....
    So thanks for inspiring us, I might be able to convince my wife to give it a go when she sees the fun that can be had...
    Keep up the excellent work you do in producing these films. Thanks.

    Good morning ladies, nice work on the 3.75k portage , fitting to wear your ironman/women💪💪💪 hats 😊, How long did it take to navigate? Not many bird sounds in the one, the chickadees in one section, by the vegetation it looks to be early spring? I hope you're having a wonderful summer, thank you for the adventure. 😊😊🇨🇦👌 ,, Bob,

      Thanks Bob! Yes, this was early spring... I believe the portage took about 3 hours - character building for sure! :)

    when portaging, if you put a strap on the front thwart you can control the back end much better....like going down a hill so the back doesn't bottom out. Also..I like the videos much better when there is no music playing. I like to hear nature.

    • @ChrisProuse
      @ChrisProuse  6 лет назад

      Thanks Rae, we do that from time to time - during day 6, you'll see Julia holding onto a strap from the front thwart. I do try to include some nature sounds, though music's a really helpful storytelling tool that professional editors like myself use to bridge quick cuts and interesting shots together more succinctly over time. If you're more interested in watching long basic string-out edits without music, I'd recommend watching Joe Robinet's Algonquin videos :)

    Wow! 3 hr portage. How long did Opeongo take to paddle?

    • @ChrisProuse
      @ChrisProuse  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching! I think the paddle up Opeongo took about 3 hours too... though we had a pretty good tail wind that day :)
