As I was helping my parents to clean out their old house I found a 1996 Smithsonian Crystal Growing Kit in my closet and it still had a couple of packets left from when I was a kid! So I'm going to grow these crystals for your amusement and then show you how you can grow your own with some items you may already have, or can get, for just a few dollars. This is a great experiment to do with your children to show them how many of our every day items have to mined. And how crystals can grow!

I should be sleeping but here I am, watching you grow crystals….. but oh my, they are pretty!! It would be cool if you could buy just chemicals and try making them from scratch :)

You can actually. The Potash Alum is available online as is the monoammonium phosphate off the top of my head. If you want color you'd need to add a dye or food coloring but hey!

I absolutely LOVE doing these things! I've got some MEGA crystal growing kits waiting to be done right now. (Ive found National Geographic brand is best) Got one for me and one for my best friend. And another kit that has 6 crystals to grow if dif colors. ❤❤❤

If you want big crystals with ones that usually only form little ones you can grow a ''seed" crystal in a separate container and then suspend it in another, letting it grow big(with slow evaporation so maybe half cover the container) and occasionally removing other tiny ones that have formed, im growing a big copper sulphate crystal rn

I remember wanting one of those kits so bad as a kid 😅
This was a nice nostalgia trip, actually got a chemistry kit two different times, one from a tag sale and one for Christmas, and both I think had various chemicals to be able to do different experiments with (christmas kit I got to use them, tag sale kit I did not because I was like 6 and nothing was labeled, but the microscope was fun), including a starkly yellow power that could be used to grow crystals, think there was a clear one too, and of course the fun ones - rock candy (aka sugar crystals, though those were made in food safe containers not the test tubes)

The supposed crystal growing kit my son got for Christmas one year was longer on promise than anything else. Maybe if he had gotten a scanning electron microscope to go with it... Needless to say, the disappointment was palpable.
