"My knowledge of obsidian is. It's a type of natural glass, you can get it in many colors and patterns, it's in westerros and minecraft" . *Seconds later* "Hey, actually, I know everything about obsidian"
Ya know, I know absolutely nothing about geology or gemology, however in the hour or so I've been watching this channel, I learned way more than I expected! It's awesome what you were able to do with my lost cause of a brain. I subscibed!
I have a piece of obsidian from Hawaii with flecks of green in it that only show up when light hits it just right. Could you do a video on why obsidian can range so much in color and appearance and (specifically) what could cause iridescence in it?
I have this large chunk (about the size of an adult human's head) it is pure black with no visible streaks/stripes or anything like that, sadly it's currently only being used as a doorstop
Loved the show. I love rocks and have since i was a child. Stuffed my nose full of tiny rocks while playing outside in our dirt driveway - about 63 years ago lol. Was telling my granddaughter the tale cause we watched a tv show (9 1 1) and a little boy shoved a toy car up his nose. Took geology classes in college and wished i had made it a career. Gid bless you all!
I learned in the old times, the stone age, they used to use it as weapons or to cut. I learned that they can be all sorts of colors. I know there can be some big ones, small ones, and medium ones. They were also used to look at the sun.
Rustle around the bag enough, get some static electricity going, if it can make a full ring reaction, you might lose your finger to a small portal in there as well.
From my grade four class! What we learned is: 1. There are different types of obsidian 2. There are many different colours of obsidian 3. There are many shapes of obsidian 4. Obsidian is a rock that happens when a volcano erupts (igneous) 5. Obsidian was used for weapons and tools 6. There can be some rocks that are soft and some rocks that are hard. Obsidian was 5 7. Some obsidian that is really sharp can be used as scalpels in the medical field Our questions were: Where did you find the obsidian? What is the one that looks like an egg called? (grey and white one)
Here on the island of Sardinia, Italy, it is used in jewelry as a talisman/bead that is said to keep away the "evil eye" and absorb your negative energy. It is very much a part of the Sardinian culture and tradition and the talisman bead is called "su coccu". As you may know, there is still much archaeological evidence and remains both from the stone age and nuragic period still standing on Sardinia.
I think i found a huge chunk of obsidian today! Been wondering wht it was for a while now, though it was a piece of rusty metal until i picked it out and broke it in two! Its glassy, its black and has big air pockets in it!
I have a question. Why did it cool so quickly as to avoid crystallization? Is Obsidian from the portions of magma that cooled quickly by oozing into water (oceans/lakes/streams)?
VERY important note. I know i'm late to the party here but Blue/Green slag glass is often sold as "Helenite", "green obsidian", "Blue Obsidian" or "Mount Saint Helens Obsidian". ALL obsidian will appear black/brown/auburn in normal light, and only reveals its true colour when a light is shone through it. As anyone in the states should know, Mount Saint Helens is a protected area, NO rock of any kind may be removed by the private collector. Obsidian that apears green when light is shone through it only occurs in a few places around the world, usually associated with mixed chemistry magma, with the site closest to me in NZ being Mayor Island in the bay of plenty, which was famous for producing very high quality obsidian varieties that would appear green or gold/amber coloured when a torch was shone through them.
Obsidian has been my favorite ore or natural rock I don't think of it as a gemstone. Rubies are gemstones that I love but obsidian is such an important ore in history. I read a lot about history as a kid and I loved Mayan and Aztec history so they used these obsidian weapons and just stones for rituals and war. Before video info thanks for making this
My son Jayden said, "my favorite thing I learned about Obsidian is that it was used to make weapons. My favorite type of Obsidian is the sharp flat one."
I love this! You go into so much detail! I myself have quite a good collection going. I have banded, mohoagany, sheen (rainbow and silver sheen), snowflake and regular old obsidian. The sheen stones are my favorite because I love how light can be played with in gemstones such as chatoyancy, sheen, labradorescence, asterism and opalscence. All of which I have a few stones for.
Have I ever said that I love the box concept..? Some mystery, some weight based pre-evaluation... It's kinda cool... Also, you look SO different with your glasses of... Wow! Lol
I have alot of black obsidian and other lava stone in my yard and in the forest behind me in Hartford Wisconsin where there is no evidence of volcano ever why?
Today, there is no volcanic activity, but thousands of years ago there could have been. I know people who were surprised to learn about previous volcanoes in Utah.
Really enjoy these videos you put out. When I was a kid I was really into looking at all the rocks I found in the creek behind my house to see if it was something rare and I liked seeing the big gem stones at museums. One critique I have and its no biggie....is that the videos seem dark...like the lighting or brightness is dark...I crank the brightness on my laptop/phone and RUclips gets super bright white, but the videos are still dark, and have a in the shadow appearance. IDK no big deal :)
You guys MUST make a dagger out of that, let's use more accurate terms - dragon glass mkay? So You really should make a dagger out of that and show it out in one of your future episodes!

Learning more in a 5 min. Video than in 1-4 years
So, obsidian is a gemstone, but one without a crystal structure? Cool. Rapidly cooled, that is.
LamanKnight ok FAM
The rapid cooling bit is bunk.
Its a rock
Geeks and nerds are my favorite kind of human which is what makes this channel so damn good.
" So you think parents have a favorite child " is the best line
I'm hooked on obsidian.
It is also found far from places with volcanic activity. It's found in most places where early humans lived.
Ya know, I know absolutely nothing about geology or gemology, however in the hour or so I've been watching this channel, I learned way more than I expected! It's awesome what you were able to do with my lost cause of a brain. I subscibed!
That's great! Glad we could help educate you and turn you into a JTV fan/subscriber!
Makes great arrowheads and really is very sharp. I generally get small cuts working with obsidian and don’t with other stones.

Olivine
Its actually a pink diamond, a ruby, a sapphire, a pearl and an amethist

Love this channel ❤ Been a rock hound most my life. I have learned so much watching you all! Thank you 😊

A cut ._.
Aw, I just just commented something similar lol

Hey how much obsidian will need to build a portal? Have ever tried?
Fnyx MC in Minecraft and if so its like 15 blocks
Actually you need a bare minimum of 10, and I',m pretty sure the maximum is 529, although that could have been changed.
Fnyx MC minimum of 10 where you don’t have corner blocks (or they’re something else like dirt)
Fnyx MC
Is that a reference to a Minecraft Nether portal? xD
{} AzulExePastel {} yeah sure it is😊

I have a question. Why did it cool so quickly as to avoid crystallization? Is Obsidian from the portions of magma that cooled quickly by oozing into water (oceans/lakes/streams)?
How practical is it's use in jewelry?

When she pulled out that giant snowflake I just shouted

Why does Obsidian have a pink and Blue color to it when the sunlight hits it
Hi Nicholas! Rainbow obsidian shows colors because of the interaction of light with included nanoparticles of magnetite.
@@gems thankyou for replying.
I have one of those it is smaller though

Obsidian doesn’t always form just due to rapid cooling.
