I have actually just cut off a cutting near the base and stuck them in the ground and they grew beautifully. Sedum root’s amazingly. Don’t even need the rooting hormone. I have actually started 30 or more plants from an original Autumn Joy that was 30 years old.
This is true, all you have to do is stick it into some soil, and it's good to go.
Yes I agree they are very easy to propagate. But sometimes it's nice to show people lots of different ways to do it. I don't think of video of me shoving a piece of sedum in the ground would be all that interesting to watch 😂😂😂. Although that's pretty much what I did when showing propagation of Angelina Sedum
I wish everything was this easy to propagate. I’ve been spreading them all around my property which is helping to fill areas that only had grass growing.
Love this video, TY! Can I propagate now (September), or is it best to do in Spring?
@@kathleenschubach5277with sedum really anytime except winter will work. You just want enough growing season so it can put on some roots.
Awesome video, very informative!
We just got a TON of rain here and I noticed my Autumn Joy Sedums (I have two HUGE ones in my front garden) flopped over! It's breaking my heart. So, now I know they need to be split but can I split them now? A week before fall? I don't want to run the risk of hurting them. I guess worse come to worse I can tie them up with burlap string?
ALSO! Sedums are attracting a ton of flies. Is there something you'd recommend to help this? PLEASE HELP
So glad I found this video.
I’ve had my sedums for years & never thought about splitting them. The whole in the centre when they grew huge always upset me 😅
Now I will spilt them up, I have 3 spots in the garden of these plants & now I can spit them all up & plant around the garden elsewhere. Thanks for sharing 😊
Haha no problem. Sometimes they'll also flop when they are fertilized or the soil is too rich. They like really lean soil 😊
I'm still a beginner at gardening so really appreciate you showing the process of taking cuttings in so much detail, like showing exactly where you cut the stem.
Glad it was helpful!
Me too 👒🙌👏

Wow! Best sedum dividing and transplanting video on youtube!
Thank you so much for this. I’m going to start cutting tomorrow. What light environment is your test gardens where you put cuttings ?
How can this video have only 620 likes? 😁 Awesome, instructive video and the host is casual enough to make you feel right at home! 🌿🍃🌸 Thank you for this video!
Aww that's super sweet of you to say. Thank you ❤️
I know so good, informative. Now Am so excited. Thank You so much for this video!
Thank you! I have Autumn Joy and haven't known how to manage it til now.
I think this is the first video of yours I'm watching. This was a great video, so much info and so many demonstrations. Definite subscribe.
Aww thanks! Happy to have you!
I just pull up some Angelina and throw the clump where i want it, and it will root. I dont even dig a hole.
I'd never had Sedum before moving to our current house three years ago. I LOVE the Sedum, it's beautiful, especially in Fall. But it was flopping open and that drove me crazy. I didn't know it needed dividing, so I put a peony ring around it last fall after I cut it back for winter. It grew this spring into the ring and is doing beautifully!
Great video! One question, though. Can the leaves you removed be propagated individually as well? Will a leaf grow a “pup” or baby like some of my other succulents?
I have seen people do that. They pull the leaves off gently and try to get a tiny bit of the base of the leaf where it goes into the stem. It seems to work for some. Sedum is really easy to propagate.
Very well explained! It's dark now, so I have to wait until morning to try out these techniques!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. You explain things so well. I will start dividing now that i know how
Love Sedum, it fills in gaps during the summer, and then in Fall, becomes a star player in the garden.
Fantastic video. Thank you for the easy to understand instructions. I appreciate your time.
So glad to find this video!! I was going to attempt this method with my Autumn Joy and have only found how to propagate with the leaves you remove rather than the stem. (I have done the "oops, I broke off a stem and poked in the ground" method, it definitely works😆) Happy to find that I can get multiple starts off one stem as well! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and I look forward to more of your videos :)
Glad it was helpful!
My goodness, one of the best video's. I can't wait to get more types of sedum
As I get older and less flexible, I'm using more and more of these easy-care plants. It's fun to learn about new plants!
It sure is 😊
Great video! I have taken cuttings of the ground cover sedum and sprinkled it into my garden and it just grows! It's so cool. I have white sedum and I am not a fan, it looks beautiful for about a week or so but turns brown very quickly. I chop off the heads and then place them into the soil and they make new plants.....super easy!
Unintentionally funny. Very informative though, thank you. Didn't realize I needed Autumn Joy.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love autumn joy 😊
Hi, good video. I love taking cuttings or dividing plants. All the éxperts' say, plant groups
of threes .... this way you can do it very cheaply. One thing about gardening I find, it pays
to be practical & patient.
Thanks for sharing. Does it matter what time of year that you split them? I have one that is huge and needs split but I didn't know if I should wait until fall.
she advises to manipulate them when actively. growing.
No it doesn’t! They are really hardy!
I do everything while they are growing and they always turn out beautiful
You gave a lot of great information on this plant Sedum is very versatile.
It sure is. That's why it's so popular. Can be used in so many different scenarios and always seems to look great.
@@PrettyPurpleDoor They make great dried flower arrangements also.
Thanks so much, I learned much. Great job 👏. Subscribed & liked.
Very helpful! And you are super easy to listen to. I look forward to watching more videos!
Thank you that's such a sweet comment 😊
I have both & i didn't know what they were. I dug up from my bf old house.
Thank you, very helpful. I'm off to grow more sedum.
I have yellow bouquet, coral reef, and firecracker sedum. I have it planted it a tree circle. To help spread it, I pull a piece near the base with a few starter roots; then replant it in a bare spot. After a week or two, it starts rooting good on its own. Got to keep it damp. For fertilizer, I use Dr Earth 2-2-2. They don't need much. Too much they'll get leggy. 🍀🌿🌾🐀🐾
Yeah I never fertilize them. They really love yucky, poor soil
This looks like my cherry tart sun sparkler - do you propagate them the same?
Yes
My 1st time watching your video. Great content
Autumn Joy roots in a flower arrangement situation. You can use it in your flower arrangement and then plant it out after......it is TOUGH
Good idea!
Such pretty flowers and such a helpful video!!
Sedum ground cover makes good hiding spots for insects
and tiny toads!
I watched your video last year and now my sedum have taken off!!
1 big plant is now 4, and they are about 75% as big as the mother plant
Awesome!! So fun to divide plants and get more plants 😍
Very good tutorial. Thank you.
I have autumn joy in all my flower gardens. It grows like a weed.In the spring .I have it in all my flower gardens. I always find places to put a start.
Thank you so much for the terrific video!! Question- what soil does sedum grow in? And how often do you water them?
Crappy soil lol. They don't like fertilizer and our drought tolerant once established. They thrive on neglect
Thank you, I couldn’t understand why some of my sedums were collapsing, and splaying out, so I asked RUclips and found your channel, I’m looking forward to dividing mine now and giving them a new lease of life.
Thanks for your advice.
Janet 😊 🌿🌸🌿
Glad I could help! I love sedums 💜
@@PrettyPurpleDoor me too 🤍~ 🦋🌸🐝
I love variegated leaves. So pretty❤
Omg, where have you been all of my gardening life?! 😍
Omg, I have been here... where have YOU been? Haha, so nice to meet you I'm glad you found me!
I like your ‘nursery’ area. You are a great teacher. Thx
Thank you!! This is so helpful! Is the process same for many perennials, like Catmint, Perennial geranium, and others of that sort of mounding type?
Yes
Thank you Amy. A great video and I'm ready to get outside. you make it looks so easy.
Thank you. Excellent teacher!
My sedum has been doing okay but starting last week, some of the flowers are turning brownish black? Can I cut it off?
It has some small ones sprouting out. Thanks so much! I found your channel this morning.
I thought a stray cat was napping in my Autumn Joy! LOL. Going to start sharing it with my coworkers.
Hahaha that's pretty funny 😊
Just found your channel while searching for why my sedum is splitting in the center. Great video with awesome advice. Thank you! Subscribed 💚
to split the root ball i would recommend a full size spade shovel. one clean kick.
Yeah I have a video about that called dividing daylilies with one tool.
Thanks this was helpful! The cutting that rooted at the end did it originally have the flowers at the top or did it appear in those 6 weeks?
Hi! I believe the flowers must have grown after it rooted. I usually cut the flowers off before rooting them.
I was wondering, are they deer resistant?
Best video on RUclips thanks
Thank you so much for this information. I have three of these plants in very big pots and one of them just flopped over and I was very sad. I thought I was going to have to get rid of it. I thought it was dying so thank you very much for making this video.
Great video! I have randomly cut multiple flowerets and stuck them in the soil and they grow 🎉
Great help for others, but my experience with sedum autum joy is much different. Mine are about four times larger and have never flooped. You will have trouble if the soil is not right. Also, they like full sun. But even better they are deer resistant.
Most of mine are fine and don't flop. If you have rich soil or a lot of rain they will flop sometimes, though. I've never seen them 4x the size of mine... 8 feet wide?
Maybe mine are more established, they are huge and really dark green. and fuller.
My Autumn Joy are definitely NOT deer resistant - we are near a reservoir and those deer eat ANYTHING! Even rudbeckia! I’m going to try putting them somewhere else, maybe even a container. Love your video Amy and am looking forward to viewing more!!
@@traceyjackson8159 Same issue with the deer…I was so upset when I discovered they had been eaten on. 😞
I wonder if that is what's happened with mine. They didn't flop until the rain. They are about two years old, a good size and have done very well until all the rain. @@PrettyPurpleDoor
Really good , very good ,thank you
Very good.thanks
Thanks. This helped me immensely!
Love this video!!!! Thank you!!
Do they need all the cuttings to make a plant, or will one cutting make a whole bush
One cutting will make a new plant
Great explanation! Thank you very much ❤
You're very welcome!
Good stuff, thanks!
Do you split the sedums in the fall or in the spring?
Whenever you want. They are very hardy.
Thank you 🙏 This was exactly what I was wanting to see and watched several videos that talked about it but didn’t show it and I clearly would’ve wasted my time with the way I thought they did it.
Is it really necessary to remove the WHOLE PLANT of Autumn Joy sedum rather than cutting off sections all around and giving those away or replanting elsewhere?
I suppose you could dig around it but for me it's easier to pull it up and divide then put a small piece back into the hole. But if you are good with a spade I don't see why you cant do it your way. Just get a good chunk of roots for each division.
Hello, I'm in zone 7, right now is fall season and is raining these pass 2 days in the northeast of NY. Can i divide my autumn joy now or best to wait till spring of 2023? Thank you
You can divide them pretty much any time. They are very hardy. I am in zone 6 and still haven't done it yet, no big deal 😊
Great video…thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing I have 3 or 4 that I love & now I can do that, I have 2 that my husband love & hi usually doesn't like anything I do like, he always asks when I will get the plant out of the pot & one Russian yellow one so beautiful.
I'm sure you can make dozens of beautiful new plants from those now 😊 enjoy!
Great video! I cant wait to try this on my sedum
Honey works as well instead of rooting powder.
I have read that it works due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties however I've never tried it Plus rooting powder is way less sticky to deal with then rooting powder hahaha, if you have it on hand of course. Even if you don't have anything on hand you could still try propagating sedum. They are very easy plants.
When you say it should be actively growing how do I know that it is? Theres a sedum that’s still all green, is it not ready yet then? Until I see color? It’s august 10th, I’m not sure if that’s when they’re actively growing or still too early
Needs stalks with flowers on top. So if it's just a mound there isn't much to propagate from. And if the stalks are dead and brown, it won't work either. Does that make sense.
So sedum angelina could be in a short ditch in front yard so we don’t have to mow?
Sedums are drought tolerant /succulents so if the ditch fills with water it would not be a good option. Otherwise, yes
@@PrettyPurpleDoor okay it doesn’t unless a lot of rain. Just trying to find something tidy, very short for the sides so we don’t have to try and get down there. 5b in Canada.
Thank you!!!!
Ohh thank you. I just rescued a sedum today and it needs some serious attention. I am going to use the cutting technique.
Tk u for info I really learned a lot. My husband has Dementia and I have started to wrk in the yard. U give lots of info 🤗❤️
That's great to hear you learned a lot. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you...Did eighth of the autumn fire this year I am zone 3/4. What is the preferred zone for all of these?
Most sedum are hardy in zones 3-11
Awesome video! The echinacea in the background is stunning 😍
Thank you so much. I am in zone 6a. Can I cut and plant in the Fall? Does it have to be still warm? I mean the temperature wise
Fall is a great time to plant, as it gets cooler.
It says it needs soilless matter to grow in? Well draining? How do I prepare a flower garden like this?
It doesn't. Plant it in the ground. Sedums are drought tolerant so they like good drainage. If you have poor drainage add compost to amend your soil.
New to the channel. Great video.
Thanks and welcome
Hi, I am so excited to have accidently found your very informative video on these beautiful flowers. We live in VA zone 7 and were cleaning up a home that hasn't had any outside attention in many years and discovered pots of these flowers thrown around the sides of the house. What is so amazing is how all these plants have adapted to the sun/shade they received for so many years and are still beautiful. So, I have a few questions in hopes you will respond. The text book says they belong in full sun. These plants have not been in full sun. If I had to guess it would be part sun and part shade for years. Should I keep these plants in these gross pots till next spring or should I start taking them out of these pots and transplanting them in the ground now? Our temperatures at night have taken a serious drop. Last night was 44 degrees. You are amazing and watching you gives me the courage to try and save these beautiful flowers. Thank you for all your help.
I have sedums that grow in anything from full sun to almost complete shade. They are very adaptable and difficult to kill. If you don't like the pots they are in, just move them to where you want them. They will adapt.
Thank you so much for your quick response. The containers are broken and worn out so I will attempt to get the compacted concrete heavy plants out of the pots and begin putting them into the ground now while we are in the fall of the year. Sure hope we can get some warm weather long enough for these plants to take root in their new beds. I bet these plants have been living in broken containers for over 15 years. I am amazed that they would continue to come back year after year in soil that is heavy and compacted as concrete. I could hardly pick a few of these containers up. @@PrettyPurpleDoor
I’m a new subscriber and really like and will benefit from your advice. Would like to know what zone your garden is in. Thanks for sharing
Hello, welcome. My garden is in zone 6b
You do not need rooting powder lol! All my cutting grow lol all I did is stick them in good soil and they grow😂
It's not necessary but it does help with the success rate
Is there a reason why mine might be turning a lime green? I live in Oklahoma and we don't get that much rain and they are in a clay, with soil area.
There is a variety called lime zinger. Do you know what variety you have for sure?
Great video, thank you!
So we have two autumn joy plants. They are full and beautiful but taller than the tier above them. Can the be cut down? We don't want to lose the buds.
No, you will definitely lose the buds if you cut them. You can divide them in the fall after they bloom, or in the spring, though.
Who else heard the plant crying? 🤣🤣. Newbie here! I love your channel!!
😂😂😂 Welcome
My autumn joy is huge. Should I cut the blooms off to help it?
Not necessary to coddle sedum at all. They are very hardy and take care of themselves. Sometimes I think they prefer to be neglected
It’s best to remove the flower heads to concentrate energy on forming roots.
Eh, sedum are so hardy it really doesn't matter in my opinion. For some plants yes, I agree.
Love your shoes! What kind are they and where did you get them?
Thanks. They are vans. They were a shark week edition version that were only available for a limited time a few years ago when this was filmed.
So helpful. Thank you!
What's the airy white flower next to the autumn joy?
Daisy fleabane. Native volunteer
Thank you so much!
So helpful, thank you!
I live in Ontario. When is it too late to take cuttings? Thank
It may be too late but it wouldn't hurt to try since it's free to do it. Look up your "first/last frost dates" on farmers almanac website and make sure you mark that down for next year.
I also have a video on my channel about creating a gardening calender that will explain this.
Thank you.
nice
Can you divide sedums in the fall? It is Oct. in Ohio and we have just bought a new house where the sedum have the whole in the middle that you showed us. Can I dig them up and divide now or do I need to wait until spring?
Yes, fall is the perfect time for dividing! I also do it during other times of the year and give away to others because I have too many now!!! ✌️
Yep absolutely you can divide now
Great video on sedums
