Lived through this all, and will never forget how the scene just changed from 92 into 93. It was like a switch had been flipped. Brilliant, brilliant times.
Was listening to this with Bluetooth earbuds. Right when the drop started in your playthrough, I got a “low battery” message. It timed out perfectly as a rave vocal sample! 😂
Ah Tim, this tutorial is absolutely amazing and covers in detail my favourite sub genre of old skool. Thank you so much for the mention it's utterly appreciated. ❤ FM8 is amazing and it's a Synth I use regularly. It's Arp is one of the best features of any Synth I've ever used. Ron laid a foundation that so many have tried to reach. A true genre defining pioneer.
This entire vibe is being heavily revisited at the moment under the label '140bpm Jungle'. That plus the resurgence of breakcore is showing that people got sick of standard, quantised beats.
As a natural follow on to this I'd love to see a deep dive into (as we now call it) oldskool hardcore jungle. You touched on it with the sy and unknown tracks, but ofc that was just the happy hardcore's beginings side of it, and it further split off into another dozen directions with all manors of moods incorperated into the style. 😊
Great video. Top Buzz, Ibiza recs and Jack Smooth are the innovators for me. 1991 top buzz sets feature many belgian techno tunes that for me are jungle techno. Mental Overdrive Soma as an example.
This is absolutely awesome. Great history. Felt like I was in a Time Machine briefly 🤘 Super cool to see what some of the newer jungle producers are doing and revisiting these vibes.
Fantastic stuff!!!! Also, for the current Jungle Tekno artists section, a Dev/Null has been reppin that sound sometimes in his Jungletrain show and has some Jungle Tekno releases!!! I discovered this genre from his mixes
Hi Tim. I first hear your music on liquid brilliants when I checked their catalogue after I released a few eps on that label, many years later I watched your first video without realising it was the same person, but now I realise and it's a pleasant surprise. One of the tunes I really like from you (apart from the one in LB "Just Can't give you up") is the one you released in Spearheads' "Heaven" which by the way is exceptional. After I watched this video I can see there is a bit of jungle techno influences in the 4x4 jungle beat, more jazzy like in Nookie's "only you". Anyway, it doesn't make sense to you but is nice to see you are doing these videos, I found them very interesting and educational. I hope you keep doing more videos like this!
Hi Lucas, thanks so much for checking my music out and big up to another Liquid Brilliants artist! 😀 You know I hadn’t thought of the thematic similarity between “Heaven” and “Only You” until just now. At the time I was listening to a lot of future bass (especially the Tourist album “U” ruclips.net/video/ppa1BBzvScI/видео.html which is well worth a listen), and was interested in fusing it with hardcore-style sounds. I seem to remember I started the track at 160BPM or so and then ended up speeding up to DnB tempo. Thanks so much for taking the time to write and I hope to hear more Playful tracks! 😊

A great era, a very experimental few years in all genres of dance. Many great tracks - edge of darkness' come together always sounded epic when dropped in any mix.. so i knew this was worth a watch soon as i saw the first few seconds ! there is so many little variations to the old school sound & lots of the quality tracks still sound good today. Most deserve a top quality repress ! I preferred the sub bass with breakbeats, the 4x4 sped up too much which was weird bcos i loved the harder 4x4 techno but i didnt like where 'hardcore' went with it. It wasnt a happy place for me.. Music from the 90's has a special key for my mind i just cant find anywhere else ! The atmosphere some clubs had was unique & a big thanks to the distributors & dj's from those days !

Great Video Tim. Grew up to this genre and still listen to it to this day. I would love a share of the preset within FM8. Probably on of the best stab sounds. Keep doin what ya doin.
Lovely stuff! Been into hardcore since the mid nineties and never really understood what Jungle Tekno actually was so this was very helpful indeed. Great little tune too…now if you can just show me how you made Positive Energy Part 2 that would be great.🙂 Deffo gonna check the links.👍
Positive Energy pt 2 was a vocal off Carl Cox Concept - The Planet of Love, the Amen off DJ Solo - Darkage (you can still hear the subs underneath! 🙈) and piano and strings off a Korg M1. I “programmed” the string patch by mucking around with parameters at random as I had no clue what I was doing, but I think I basically put a low pass filter opening up over a one of the string waves. I could never make a tune like the early Vibena tracks again as loads of it was random button mashing 😆
How on earth are you recording your voice-over with an SM58 at that distance? I have to crank up the gain and shove mine right up in my face just to get a bit of signal.
Thanks for the sub. It's not mono, but it doesn't have the mid/side mixing approach I'd use on a modern tune. Tunes back then definitely weren't mono :)

It was played at all the big raves in the early '90s, a darker offshoot of hardcore with more emphasis on synths rather than samples.
