This is great to hear and yes, unless I am doing a video specifically on Live, you can take what you learn and apply to your DAW of choice. I never want anyone to feel they must use Ableton, as they should use what is comfortable for them and gets them the results they are after. It is the all about getting the final track to be the best it can be, not what software was used to create it!
Good to hear that you are taking what I am teaching and applying it in your own way, to whatever DAW you are using as it shouldn't matter and the producer should use the tools that works for them!

the left and right microphones are represented by what is known as stereo field, yes you got that part right, but when you select a left in utility you're actually selecting the left recorded channel of the stereo field, because the fields they overlap each other, it's more of like an EQ value when the original 70s recording was made, and of course they used tape machines back then to record, it was all analog. it's close to what you said but even more nuanced.
Thanks so much for this Stranjah, I’ve watched it twice already and am about to watch it again, I’ve learned so many new things from it. Thanks so much for all the support and I am glad you are spending the time to watch this as many times as needed, in order to get all you can from it! To answer your question, no, unfortunately there is no means to get the 'gapless' playback in audio if you slice your breaks with anything other than ReCycle. Even though the software is 25 years old, it still holds the crown in this regards. You can certainly slice in all modern software, but it won't sound as clean and artifact free, unfortunately. Since you say you are running an older PC, ReCycle will run PERFECTLY on it, as it was designed to run back on Windows 98. You will have to purchase a license, though. Worth it if you ask me, but it is money you have to be willing to spend, to get these results.
Thank you for your reply! I will get a licence for ReCycle, it sounds so clean the way you were doing it and allows so much more control. I didn’t know a lot of those tricks you were doing existed haha. I recently got the Amigo plugin to get my drums sounding a little more 93, I need to watch your vid on that too!

You are most welcome and thanks for being a loyal supporter. It makes my day to know people are getting stuff out of what I do and are able to successfully apply it on their own tracks!
I follow you and Fanu for jungle production stuff and I noticed he does a similar thing with stretching each hit but instead uses the loop function in Sampler, which also gives it a tail. Good stuff, thanks for the breaks!
Does this technique sound as natural and artifact free, as doing it in Recycle? Sounds like I need to check this method out. It is likely more time consuming this way? Do you have a link to this technique, so I can see? Thanks for the insight!
Starting off with the Hot Pants (my personal fave break) is strong. I have all these breaks and more, and I use them to add a bit of thickness to my drum patterns. One break you don't see often is the forbidden break/PH break. I think it's because people don't see it as a breakbeat, but if you slice it up, you can get some neat patterns, especially with the triplet kicks and the mouseclick sound.
Nice suggestion! I agree, the key is to not always focus on straight up breakbeats, but use any source that when spliced, processed and manipulated, can be used as either a breakbeat on its own, or as a nice compliment to other loops.
Just wanted to mention, the title card for the sesame break says sandy instead of sesame. Not really a huge deal but I thought I would mention it in case you want to fix it. Brilliant video btw. Also thank you, I downloaded the breaks and there were a couple which are better quality than what I already had. Cheers :)
Hi Stranjah, maybe you already did it but can you review how to make basslines like Jonny L’s Sam … stuff like that. Im sure its based on a distorted 808 sample but maybe you could go deep into it more. Thank you for dropping all the knowledge!
@ nice. Ive been thinking a lot about it. Some of my thoughts are ….Bass to Kick ratio , small kick and big 808 distorted bass ? Eqed kick to more of a midrange sound, leave the sub for the 808 , compression, distortion, saturation, eq, sidechain, what key works best….Theres just some magic in tunes like this! It seems to sound great on most sound system as well. Maybe there is something to the old school way of doing things….anyways Thanks for getting back to me. Also Sully does an awesome job of this sound…ofcourse he is a much more modern producer.
Yes, edits and variation are key to keeping things interesting. Certainly play around with tricks like this, to keep things rolling and sounding fresh, without getting stale, or boring.
30:15 Try using Versatility (Instrumental) version for Sandy break, it sounds cleaner and has that cool snare fill. Also there's version from Three Times Dope - Mr. Sandman (Extended Club Mix), where I believe they used noise gate to make it tighter, this one can be found in Jungle Warfare pack.
I think the user needs to use what works for them, as it isn't the DAW you use, but how the final track comes out. If you can get by fine with Serato, I say stick with it!
Glad to have your enthusiasm! Thanks for checking it out! Say, I know you are an oldskool Junglist at heart, so I know all these breaks are super familiar to you!
Hey, the sandy break is actually a second hand version from 3 times dope the sandman , cj Macintosh remix , Took me years to find the original, fine work 👌
@STRANJAH It's a sample from Ohio players - Funky worm, and yes I can loop the sample in my head to the tune we're both thinking of. Thought it was a joker tune but I'm not sure, maybe something that came out on switch, it's definitely a 95/96 tune though.
Hi and thanks for your interest in our products, primarily the Production Suite Bundle. If you are using FL Studio (or any DAW for that matter), you would be perfectly fine. Most of those packs are Sample Packs, which are compatible with all DAW on the market. All of the Ableton kits also come with WAV (sample) variants, so you don't lose anything there, either. In summary, you will have 100% compatibility, with no loss due to using FL Studio with the Production Suite Bundle. Reach out to support@deviantaudio.com if you have any further questions!
Ya, all DAW can do this internally, but you will lose out on the 'tail' aspect of the stretch functionality, unfortunately. This is why we still stick with ReCycle, over the newer tools available to us. That is too bad if they dropped MAC support.
Awesome video 🙌🏻 There's a break used in early 90's jungle techno I've been trying to find . It's used at the beginning of Kev Birds This is A Trip . Do you know what it is ? 🙏🏻
Hey man! Check this... Hip This House - Shadows J. This is one of the earliest uses of that break, otherwise you can just sample it from the This is a Trip track itself.
Those James Brown make highly influence Hip Hop too, same as Kraftwerk Computer World and Trans Europe Express tune , it's crazy how many old funk and disco album can be use as a source for one shot drum sample or loop.
They were a goldmine back then. There wasn't many other sources to choose from (today we are over saturated with sources) so everyone had to scrounge and make good use of anything and everything they could get their hands on!
You know it as the sandy/sandman break because that name comes from the 2nd gen version off the 90's UK record Mr. Sandman. I think most old hardcore and jungle used 2nd gen breaks, nobody had 70's funk records laying around so they grabbed them from more recent hip-hop, hardcore, sample cds, whatever. Those versions already sounded fat too! For example Ray Keith and Bizzy B have both mentioned that their Amen came from Mantronix - King of the Beats.
This could very well be the case! We will never truly know, but this definitely sounds plausible. Thanks for taking the time to share this info with us all!
These samples can be found just about everywhere nowadays. The only difference is in how they are processed and used. Chop them up and layer with other breaks and you will be good.
Recycle doesn't work on the latest Apple Systems... Propellerhead and Native Instruments discontinued to support it anymore. And no single other app to fill this gap. Unbelievable in the year 2024. I'm kind of desperate. For any hints regarding to convert breakbeats to Rex files I would be more than thankful!
It really is too bad, I know. Windows systems are always supported, because they use off the shelf CPU that are always backwards compatible. Apple tries too hard, in always changing things up and it ends up leaving a large portion of their user base in the past, when this happens. Recycle is super old now. It really could use a massive update, in terms of GUI, algorithm and even newer MAC support. That would be amazing!
BIG UP stranjah, every time I hear the funky drummer I think of the end of Shadrach by the Beastie Boys. Thats where I sampled it from 100 years ago on my ESI32. lol "the best in mens clothing, call up Pauls Boutique and ask for Janice....."
It was great to hear that other genres were also sampling and using these breaks, sometimes many years before hardcore and Jungle were even a thing. I can remember hearing LL Cool J, Maestro Fresh Wes etc back in the late 80's all using these samples. I actually liked the Hip Hop back then, that were using breakbeat samples and were implementing vinyl scratching etc. Definitely a much different sound to today's Hip Hop!
Definitely! Even the 140bpm genre was popular not long ago! I was simply giving the most common range for tempo, but of course, use whatever you think is best! If it sounds good, it is good and there is nothing wrong with that!
Well that is just it! Yes, all modern DAW have full slicing functionality, but none are able to create the tails that Recycle does, so you will still get the gaps present if you pitch and speed up the loops. It's a shame really, that a 25 year old program is still needed to do this, but Recycle really is fantastic and I do still use it to this day, as do many other artists!
That is an unreleased track of mine I was working on! Glad to know you are liking what you hear! It is actually from a previous video I did on phonk music.
I like your list! As a fan of the Ragga Jungle sound from 1994 - 1996, I would add the following breaks, sorted by popularity: - The Winstons - Amen, Brother (1969) The #1 Jungle Break - Kid'N Play - Do this my Way (1988) Very popular; 2nd gen break using the Think Break - James Brown - Soul Pride (1969) Medium popular back then - James Brown - Cold Sweat (1967) Medium popular; quite modular like the Amen - Kurtis Blow - Do the Do (1981) Moderately popular; the used part comes near the end - Jimmy McGriff - The Worm (1968) Moderately popular - Eddie Bo and Inez Cheatham - Lover and a Friend (1967) Rarely used, but a nice hectic character
The think break has always had me wondering if he says Georgia! And what else ? Keep at it Ed? So much that I named one of my songs using the break "Georgia"
@@STRANJAH My hunch was always that maybe it was recorded in Georgia. The actual recording location is unknown, so it plays into the mystery. The JB's we're always ad-libbing with the energy. Those minor details make tracks like these timeless #iconic
If you listen hard, now that you know what the breaks are, I'm sure you will hear it in LOADS of tracks back then, without even realizing it! There was very minimal resources back then, so everyone was using whatever they could get their hands on and even directly and blatantly sampling from each other to get the goods!
Definitely on the agenda. This video has been quite popular and there are certainly many more breaks that could be covered, so yes, I will be doing a second video with 10 more, at some point in the future! Thanks for checking out the video and showing your interest in it!
Hey, check this guy, so behind the times. He comes in here beating his chest about... 1995? Where have you been? Most knew about these breaks, since AT LEAST 1992!
I have dreamed for years that they would update Recycle. It has technically been updated many years ago, but it was just a UI change and to add compatibility with later OS's. The algorithm is certainly far from being perfect. It very often misses obvious transients, or places the split point pretty far off from where it should go, making for a lot of tedious, manual editing, but the end results are working. If they updated Recycle to include a better, more fine tuned algorithm in this regards, I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Nice suggestion! I agree, the key is to not always focus on straight up breakbeats, but use any source that when spliced, processed and manipulated, can be used as either a breakbeat on its own, or as a nice compliment to other loops.
I don't even make dnb but your tutorials are rad as ef. Really versatile techniques
🙏
Just wanted to mention, the title card for the sesame break says sandy instead of sesame. Not really a huge deal but I thought I would mention it in case you want to fix it. Brilliant video btw. Also thank you, I downloaded the breaks and there were a couple which are better quality than what I already had. Cheers :)
Oh, thanks for letting me know. I will have to look into that. You are most welcome too and thank you for taking the time to check the video out!
Hi Stranjah, maybe you already did it but can you review how to make basslines like Jonny L’s Sam … stuff like that. Im sure its based on a distorted 808 sample but maybe you could go deep into it more. Thank you for dropping all the knowledge!
I'll see what I can dig up and put out on this topic!
7:59 gappy drums sounds cool as a detour from the full on drums and great on a bridge part of the track.
Thanks for this insight! So this was included in Jungle Warfare already? Do you know which volume and where exactly?
@@STRANJAH Vol. 1, break called "Tiny"
Thanks so much for pointing me in the exact direction for this. Definitely saves times looking for it!
You're such a wizard. I learned a lot in this video. Abelton though? Am I out growing serato studio or can I replicate this with that daw?
I think the user needs to use what works for them, as it isn't the DAW you use, but how the final track comes out. If you can get by fine with Serato, I say stick with it!
Renoise is the one.
Oh ya! For those that still like the oldskool tracker interface, you can't go wrong with REnoise!
Quality tutorial and knowledge 👌 big thanks for the all the links
y0 y0! Looking forward to this one!
Glad to have your enthusiasm! Thanks for checking it out! Say, I know you are an oldskool Junglist at heart, so I know all these breaks are super familiar to you!
Hey, the sandy break is actually a second hand version from 3 times dope the sandman , cj Macintosh remix ,
Took me years to find the original, fine work 👌
This is new to me and very helpful! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to add this to my arsenal! 💪

Big up for the link! I can definitely hear where this could be sampled from! Lots of clean parts to grab! Nice!
Oh, I can hear another sample from an old Jungle track back in the mid 90's! Can't put my name on it though! That horn/lead type sound!
@STRANJAH
It's a sample from Ohio players - Funky worm, and yes I can loop the sample in my head to the tune we're both thinking of. Thought it was a joker tune but I'm not sure, maybe something that came out on switch, it's definitely a 95/96 tune though.
Nice vid! If I use FL Studio is it really worth to buy your production suite? I feel I may loose many content :S
Excellent video top to bottom. Pt 2 3 4 … lets go!
Haha thanks! I think a second is definitely in order!
Recycle is no longer available for Mac, is there another way to extend the chops? Cubase user.
Ya, all DAW can do this internally, but you will lose out on the 'tail' aspect of the stretch functionality, unfortunately. This is why we still stick with ReCycle, over the newer tools available to us. That is too bad if they dropped MAC support.
Yes yes STRANJAH big ups
@30:31 Also Bad Company's The Nine
Awesome video 🙌🏻
There's a break used in early 90's jungle techno I've been trying to find . It's used at the beginning of Kev Birds This is A Trip .
Do you know what it is ? 🙏🏻
Hey man! Check this... Hip This House - Shadows J. This is one of the earliest uses of that break, otherwise you can just sample it from the This is a Trip track itself.
Really educative video. Thanks a lot !
Anyone know how to do that texture Warp setting in Hot pants using FL Studio?
King! 🙌🏻Thank you
You are most welcome!
Those James Brown make highly influence Hip Hop too, same as Kraftwerk Computer World and Trans Europe Express tune , it's crazy how many old funk and disco album can be use as a source for one shot drum sample or loop.
They were a goldmine back then. There wasn't many other sources to choose from (today we are over saturated with sources) so everyone had to scrounge and make good use of anything and everything they could get their hands on!
my favorite use of the "sandy" is in Carlito´s "Cascade" one of my all time TOP 3 D´n´B Tracks...
Amazing as always. Thank you!
🙏 You are most welcome!
hej do you have any massive (the original native instruments vst) on deviant audio?
No, I have a preset pack on Massive X only. Sorry!
@@STRANJAH That's fine, bro. Yeah I have used both now. Love Massive.
It definitely was a great synth at the time and a game changer when it came out!
Could we use these samples and not get copyrighted
These samples can be found just about everywhere nowadays. The only difference is in how they are processed and used. Chop them up and layer with other breaks and you will be good.
Thanks for the rex files. Some i didn't know and the ray keith sample was on my whichlist.
stranjah! 🎉
@omaisgee123 🎉
C&K&M's use of Think break in breakaway knocked my front teeth our the first time I heard it.
Big ups for this, could start a jungle career with it
💪
Great lesson bro. TY!
BIG UP stranjah, every time I hear the funky drummer I think of the end of Shadrach by the Beastie Boys. Thats where I sampled it from 100 years ago on my ESI32. lol
"the best in mens clothing, call up Pauls Boutique and ask for Janice....."
Wicked! How about Soul Pride and Life Could breaks in the next one?
There will definitely be a pt.2 video and I think the Soul Pride break would be a PERFECT addition! I love that break too!
Tbf on the BPM topic there was a lot of jungle getting made in the 150s BPM range and it sounds so good
Definitely! Even the 140bpm genre was popular not long ago! I was simply giving the most common range for tempo, but of course, use whatever you think is best! If it sounds good, it is good and there is nothing wrong with that!
@STRANJAH yea man 100%, good example of all this is Demons Theme by Bukem that you mention in the video is 145 BPM!
There you go! Perfect example indeed!
Great stuff!!
this is so educational
You sir are a legend 🫡
❤
thanks for the info and the breaks
Superb 🔥💯☄️
Quite shocked to see recycle still being used in 2024 😮 thought modern DAWs would have this functionality now!?
Well that is just it! Yes, all modern DAW have full slicing functionality, but none are able to create the tails that Recycle does, so you will still get the gaps present if you pitch and speed up the loops. It's a shame really, that a 25 year old program is still needed to do this, but Recycle really is fantastic and I do still use it to this day, as do many other artists!
something we used to do manually on the Akais by quickly triggering multiple duplicates at decreasing velocity’s and re sampling, back in the day 👀
Nice tip! Always nice to hear how things were done back in the day. Definitely different from nowadays!
What’s the track in the background in the intro ?
That is an unreleased track of mine I was working on! Glad to know you are liking what you hear! It is actually from a previous video I did on phonk music.
@@STRANJAH a few of your background tracks have caught my ear before 👍
Thank you! After being in the game for so long and having so many releases in the past, it is nice to hear that I still got it! 😅
It was real time consuming doing this sort of thing on an Akai S2000..😟
Oh I bet, especially on the particular model that had the smallest screen of them all!
I can't believe the propellerhead software is still around!
Recycle isn't updated anymore, their Reason DAW certainly is.
❤DJ kinkychinkylove ❤ is the master of the todgers🎉
I like your list! As a fan of the Ragga Jungle sound from 1994 - 1996, I would add the following breaks, sorted by popularity:
- The Winstons - Amen, Brother (1969)
The #1 Jungle Break
- Kid'N Play - Do this my Way (1988)
Very popular; 2nd gen break using the Think Break
- James Brown - Soul Pride (1969)
Medium popular back then
- James Brown - Cold Sweat (1967)
Medium popular; quite modular like the Amen
- Kurtis Blow - Do the Do (1981)
Moderately popular; the used part comes near the end
- Jimmy McGriff - The Worm (1968)
Moderately popular
- Eddie Bo and Inez Cheatham - Lover and a Friend (1967)
Rarely used, but a nice hectic character
Great list there! Definitely some top breaks, some I will have to look back into again for a future video!
Word of the day. FUNKY
I hope I also can use them in 2025 🙃
Thanks for your content, it really helps to get into making my favorite genre.
Absolutely! The great thing is, this stuff is timeless! We can probably use them 2125 if we still wanted too! 😊
Great tutorial.....culture. Peace ✌️
The think break has always had me wondering if he says Georgia! And what else ? Keep at it Ed? So much that I named one of my songs using the break "Georgia"
Haha, I have heard many people try different interpretations of that voice, but never Georgia!
@@STRANJAH My hunch was always that maybe it was recorded in Georgia. The actual recording location is unknown, so it plays into the mystery. The JB's we're always ad-libbing with the energy. Those minor details make tracks like these timeless #iconic
U R A ⭐️
Excellent
Cia records all over that sandy break
Listen to new Krugah tracks..he uses all these breaks mixed together..real good jungle.
Nice!
I kept dozing while I watched this and dreamt you were using the loops to help Frodo fight orcs.
🤔😂
this is my bible
MASSIVE
6:17 it's what now?!
looks like i'm making some jungle today
Best of luck and have fun! ✊
i like the relaxed way you speak but I'd prefer a little faster
I'm sure the sandy break was in truely one.
The sesame is in Tom and Jerry - Maximum style.
If you listen hard, now that you know what the breaks are, I'm sure you will hear it in LOADS of tracks back then, without even realizing it! There was very minimal resources back then, so everyone was using whatever they could get their hands on and even directly and blatantly sampling from each other to get the goods!
This is great do 10 more
Definitely on the agenda. This video has been quite popular and there are certainly many more breaks that could be covered, so yes, I will be doing a second video with 10 more, at some point in the future! Thanks for checking out the video and showing your interest in it!
29:28 Ram Trilogy - Snake Bite!
Nice find!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ha, I'm not the only one still using ReCycle!
Nope and you are a Don for still doing so! 💪
my #1 is the TrAmen (which funnily enough should be more accurately called Domen lol)
LOL. I would love to do a video on that... but not sure how well it would go over, considering how this went in the past! 😂
Don't wake Up the Caveman😅
Fsr out, I forgot you can time stretch right inside the timeline now lol
Good reminder
Ya, it is easy to forget these little things at times. So much going on with updates and changes to all the software over time.
Check out this guy, telling us everything we already knew back in 95
Check out this guy, checking out the video and leaving a comment, keeping the algorithm going for me! Thanks a ton veteran!
Hey, check this guy, so behind the times. He comes in here beating his chest about... 1995? Where have you been? Most knew about these breaks, since AT LEAST 1992!
😅
hi stranjah
Wow, thank you so much! This is VERY much appreciated! 😀
we sweating in this one
Imagine if they actually updated ReCycle to have AI capabilities with the timestretch adding tails.
