These interviews are delightful to watch: calm, measured, informative, apparently honest with no garish lights, no hideous screens always on and dipicting scenes from the movies they're talking about, no noisy, cackling audience inserting sound and interrupting the conversation and no stupid, corny, foul innuendos to try to embarass the guest or make the host seem smart. Not giggly, greedy for slander or aggrandizing. It's just straightforward and refined.
@Frank Lee Steamed No giraffes munching on leaves in the background, No thermonuclear warheads rolling around on the floor, no washing machines making whirring sounds while it washes some dirty shirties clean, no dancing pandas pirouetting around in a beautiful animal ballet. Just Maggie Smith answering questions put to her by other people.
I feel so blessed to have lived during Maggie's lifetime aa she is undoubtedly the greatest of all time. Rest in perfect peace Dame Maggie, and thank you. ❤💔🙏⚘️
I was watching an interview of her from just a couple years ago and she has the exact same mannerisms. Playing with her bangs and pausing to think before she speaks.
Well something you would not see today .! Both of them smoking WOW ! This apart l love this actress surpass all those plastic American face with all the same faces Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are the most wonderful actors in the world . NO matter how old they are they steal the show everytime . They are MAGIC !
The greatest dramatic Dame of them all. And it's remarkable to hear the younger Michael Aspel speak with RP. His voice became so much more natural as he grew older.
Her debut was in the Taylor-Burton all 🌟 vehicle The V.I.P.s, she's excellent right off the bat opposite Rod Taylor, who she would work with again. 1 of her 1st jobs was doing live revues on Broadway, she could do it all.
I keep imagining dowager countess during her younger years were exactly like dame in 60s. Gorgeous in corset mid 1800. Mayb julian can make another downton in that era focusing on young countess
At this video start, back when she could (proleptically) have played one of her Downton Abbey Duchess of Grantham roaring 'twenties granddaughters. Dame Maggie here, in her May, epitomized the cerebral subset of the Carnaby Street swinging '60s girl.
I'd go get my haircut as a boy and come home with headaches pickled in cigarette smoke. Nobody gave two third about the effects on themselves or others, even a child. To ask people not to smoke would be difficult when there are already several people puffing away.
She is from Ilford - pretty much the East End of London next to where I grew up. 😁 I reckon she cultivated her accent with her career. She is fabulous.
... well its not that strange remember this was the late 1960s., (the first interview) but you have to remember as late as the 1990s alot of people still smoked in public places and in cars
@@michaelhawkins7389 Well, here in Germany they did until 10 years ago..and in cars most people still do...I grew up in a blue cloud literally 🤢 I never touched a cigarette..
@@bsota8513 Well I guess because we don’t see it that often. people do smoke but they tend to do it privately. There are laws now that prevent you from smoking in public i.e. in restaurants etc. so you just don’t see it as much anymore. So that’s why it seems a little strange.
Hmmm i wonder if maggie smith is the same age with betty white since she already appear in black and white movies or tv or probably same age as Maria Callas
No. Betty White was almost 100 when she died. Maria Callas would be even older. Wikipedia will tell you the age of any celebrity they feature. Also, black and white TV was present up to the 70s.
Id like to point out what a G she is, smoking and drinking in half of the interviews! But she's so classy it's not even noticeable. Plus....the 60's LOL.
@@bsota8513 no problem. just that it's generally discouraged nowadays because they're unhealthy but also, because actors nowadays make the conscious decision to refrain/limit from being seen smoking, drinking shooting a gun etc.
Seeing celebrities smoking on TV during an interview seems kind of strange to me. I guess it was a sort of norm in the 60s. Still feels a little disturbing.
Whats 'disturbing' about it? Ever since society has had it rammed down its throat to quit smoking, people have become more obese, drank more alcohol and even turned to online gambling to soothe themselves. Left folk smoke cigarettes, they would be a lot more happier - and yes, I am a smoker - I will quit when I want to, I admire the old days, scenes like this when interviewees could smoke on film. Have a cigarette.
Her pupils seemed not quite synchronized. It gave her an aloof look, it made her also mysterious. That, and her drooping eye lids. Fascinating, and mysterious. Even in her Lady Grantham days.
I love Maggie! She decided to age naturally and she did it with a lot of class.
Rest In Peace

Frank Lee Steamed I completely agree with you
looks like someone doesn't particularly like Graham Norton :)
Refined except they’re both smoking, that’s really weird.
Her Oscar is holding the door open? I doubt that seriously.
I could listen to her forever. oh dear me!
Down-to-earth. What she speaks reflects how she thinks. Calm, logical.
A national treasure

How can you not love her. You can't. Respect and love sky high from me.
Young Maggie Smith is so beautiful!!
Lifelong ❤
Yes, stunningly beautiful. Fantastic features and what a charming smile. Of course a brilliant actor and comedic wit, too.
Don't watch a sixties talk show if you're trying to quit smoking.

Well said!
She sounds a lot more up-market in the old videos than she does now. It seems that an 'acceptable' English accent has changed over time.
Even the Queen has had to tone it down a bit.

They probably weren't really smoking but just hold the cigarettes to advertise for the cigarette industry.
Drive me nuts. Neither one took a drag.
Had Dame Maggie not smoked, she might have lived to be a supracentenarian.

Never seen her so young. She was a smoke show.
