Nice tips Pablo! I want to add two more: 1. On ekinet people living in Japan can get up to 35% off if they reserve their tickets in advance. 2. On the Hokuriku Shinkansen, car number 10 has a designated luggage area (not sure about other lines).
Just want to say thank you so much. I just came back from a two week Japan trip and I was so intimidated by trying to put together a plan to enjoy the different areas. You and your wife made it soooo easy. You demystified what I absolutely could not figure out on my own and I had the best vacation of my life. I got to experience being a tourist with all of the hacks & preferences you shared. Going to Japan has been a bucket list item for years and I couldn't have made it happen without your making it so easy!
for those people who are planning to go to japan i suggest to buy a JAPAN RAIL PASS, it really helps save a lot of money to go a lot of places. on my 10 day trip I went to tokyo, osaka, nagoya, and fukuoka all in one very cheap and convenient as well but some location don't have JRP make sure to buy SUICA and load money on train station
Can you please tell me where it is possible to purchase the jrp for 7 days in japan. I was planning to preorder it before I left my home country, my time run out and now I need to buy it when I arrive instead..
lets say i'm just going to travel in tokyo using its trains for around 6 days and later board shinkansen from tokyo to osaka, do you think it's worth it to buy a jr pass?
I love the shinkansen, its so smooth and relaxing to ride! I came from the northeastern part of the USA so our public transportation is so-so and you have to have a car to get anywhere. I love how in Japan I can bike everywhere local, take the trains and buses farther away, and feel safe doing so alone. I seriously love living in Japan.
Just got back from Japan a few days ago and bought a 7-day Green JR Pass - the reclining seats, quiet cars and extra leg room made all the difference!!! Just a tip for those riding in the green reserved cars at 5:44 IS A BIG NO-NO!!!! You cannot have shoes on when the footrest is folded out - you will possibly get told off.
LUGGAGE TIP: When you want to put your luggage at the ends of the car, I've seen locals extending the luggage handles and slipping it through a railing in the wall to stop them from rolling around. That way you can store them upright and have more space for other luggages.
honestly what a life saver 😭😭💜 i’m heading to japan next week and am planning on going one way from tokyo to osaka via shinkansen!! I didn’t even know about the limited luggage storage space on the carriages (and I’m travelling with a big luggage since it’s a 2 week trip) so thank you!!!!
Heyy, I hope you had fun visiting Japan. I’m planning to go in July I’m just curious how was your trip? And I’ve got one more question I’m also planning to go to Osaka from Tokyo how was the train experience also got big luggage with me 😅 I believe there is some companies that do provide to handle your luggage and deliver it to your hotel, I don’t know how much will cost tho Thanks❤
@@therealbukharieven the hotels handle forwarding your luggage to your next hotel, you may want to inquire on that too…& yes, there’s lots of services here that you can either store your larger luggage (3 days) or coin lockers (smaller luggage). We are here in Osaka right now & prior to coming here I store 2 luggages for 3 days & for 6,000 yen. We’re going back to Tokyo to catch our flight to the Philippines that’s why I decided to store our excess luggage…😊
I have traveled on high speed trains all around the world, but I still prefer Japan's "bullet train" and the Green seats. it is worth the extra price for the comfort and experience. Thanks for the tips Paolo.
I am glad you did this. Before our last trip to Japan in October 2018, I searched for a video on this topic and found some rather poor examples. I was able to make our way to the shikansen from Kyoto to Tokyo last time but knowing more now may help us save some money for our next trip back in February. :)
For people visiting Japan and plan to do a few travel journeys by train I would highly recommend a Japan rail pass. You have to buy it prior to going to Japan and then collect your pass in Japan. It allows you to use the Shinkansen and JR trains for free whenever you want! As long as you do enough trips it's cheaper than buying tickets and you don't have to worry about buying the wrong ticket or missing a train as you just get another ticket lol. You can also speed past mount Fuji as many times as you like! I'd suggest pay extra for the Green cart. It's quieter and much more comfortable / enjoyable and you'll always find space to put large size suitcases behind the back seats. Also, avoid visiting Japan when they have holidays as the trains get super busy. I wanted to ride the line to then end at Amoroi from Tokyo in their most fancy first class for fun. Regrettably, due to the holidays I could only get a ticket their and not back. So maybe next time. If you are visiting during the holidays reserve all your seats as soon as you get your pass. Cheers! Nick
Shinkansen is literally the best train in the world. Comfortable seats, outlets, ITS QUIET (people dont talk or play music, and the dB of the train is pretty low as well), and the views you can see from the train, even travelling as fast as it is are simply amazing.
Love the Shinkansen. Best bet: save some yen and purchase an Ekiben before departing the station. More choices and save some green as well. For us, the Nozomi is the best and fastest going from Tokyo to Shin Osaka. Good job on the vlog as usual. Keep them coming.
Actually the reserved seats as mentioned on the timetable books (I bought a few from Japan) are 320, 520 or 720 yen more expensive depending on the time (whether it counts as a day with high demand or low demand). High demand days are more expensive. And Nozomi reserved seats are slightly more expensive again by adding like 300 yen or so depending on distance.
I always use the discount ticket store since I am a local Japanese ! But foreigners (someone who has other country’s passport) can buy the special discounted Shinkansen ticket, so envy you guys😂 I always use the discount ticket store when I watch movie, they always give us the cheap options😆👍
We just came back from a 3 week holiday in Japan and one other tip is for those who get JR passes, you can request for reserved seating for free as long as you go to the office at least 1 day before going on the train. Was very useful for us to make sure my wife and I could sit with our young children.
@@WHERESSS we had to look for 4 seats at a time. In hindsight, the trains we were on were not so crowded. Even so, we didn't want to risk not having seats together, considering we were travelling with young kids. Had it just been my wife and I, less planning and more spontaneity would have been OK.
I think it’s important to mention that anyone travelling on Shinkansen using the JR Pass should reserve seats at every chance they get, since there’s no extra charge. Nothing sucks more than standing on a train from Aomori to Tokyo (3 hrs)
I’ve ridden the Shinkansen (Nozomi), between Tokyo and Osaka, many times and thought I’d seen the seats facing each other, but thought it was a different train model. Now I know the trick. Thanks!
We got a JR rail pass prior to coming to Japan from the UK and the Shinkansen makes the UK rail network look like a play set. Everything leaves on time to the second, it’s clean, fast, there are no people on phones was amazing!
I really enjoy your videos. I‘m going to visit Japan for the first time next year. I‘m already so excited and will watch all your videos in the meantime. Thanks for all the helpful content

These were really neat when I travelled December last year. I forget which one we booked but we must have gotten lucky - we had the charging ports and even USB outlets. I was surprised by how mobile you could be at top speed lol. NOTE to those purchasing bullet train tickets in advance - DO NOT FORGET YOUR EXCHANGE PAPERS! No electronic version will be taken in lieu, and don't try to have your family overnight them to you (lol). Funny memory, I went to use the restroom and stopped by the smoking area. This little room looked state of the art, all glass and metal. Every 30 seconds or so, some kind of vent would open and the air would rush out of the room it was pretty cool. This Japanese guy walked in with an school tobacco pipe, drops some tobacco into the bowl and chiefs the whole thing and walks out. I thought it was kind of strange but I saw it happen a few times while i was there so I guess it is somewhat normal 😂
Just think, in America you will soon be able to experience this technology in a Shinkansen N700S along the privately owned Texas Central line between Houston and Dallas. Someone was really using their noodle when deciding to go with the proven Shinkansen tech. Hopefully it opens the door for expansion in other parts of the country and pulls us out of the 70's technological sludge that our railways are stuck in.
Great info, again. Just subscribed. Really wish we had high speed rail in the US! Seems perfect for destinations a little too far to be a convenient drive, but not far enough to make a flight out of it.
I should have known your vblog last month ago. I had difficulty living in Japan for 3 months. My travel in Japan was so dependent on what I saw online but it was fun and exciting. I'm hoping I'll be able save more when I go back to Japan
Thank-you for your videos. Im traveling to Tokyo next March during the Cherry blossom festival. You and your camera man are doing a fantastic job and at least I'll know what to do when I arrive. 😊😊😊
Thanks for the great tips, we're taking the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2020. I'm glad I'm not the only person who calls them snacky snacks. Man, my back was hurting just watching you film the first part bending over in the station.
I live in Toronto and have visited Japan about 12 times. In Canada, we have Via Rail and The Canadian which travels between Toronto and Vancouver. However it’s very expensive and the cars are from the 1950’s and it’s slow and always late. I’ve been on the Shinkansen many times and without a doubt it is the best in the world (I’ve been to 40 countries). It’s fast, clean, safe and always on time. Japan should be very proud.
I love you dude.. this is what I need. I'll be going to Japan next week for my 2nd visit. If you are playing basketball still, We will probably meet on the court ;) . I definitely will buy you a drink brother. I appreciate you taking time and doing videos. Keep it up.
I paid $200 for an unlimited 7 day pass when I went. Received the ticket voucher the next day from France which was kind of weird. After I landed in narita I had to go to the JR office to redeem the voucher for an actual pass. Plenty of restrictions since it’s only for short term tourists. Still a great deal if you use it a lot.
Thank you for letting me know about the limited luggage space. We are a family of four adults, each with a suitcase and carry on/backpack. This will be interesting!!!
Have wanted to visit Japan for a long time. There are so many things i admire about the people and the culture. Your videos have been very helpful. We will go with some sort of group tour, as everything is so different from the states. l
It can be a bit daunting for those who have never been to Japan before, but Paolo's videos are great help! They helped us to before we started vlogging in Japan ourselves!
So basically if we are three people and order the last row we can just flip it, have 3 power outlets and store all our luggage in the gap behind us? That’s awesome! How do i choose my seat when booking?
Honestly I have been on both amtrak and the japanese bullet train. And while I can't speak for the one kind of high speed east coast route I can say that US trains are slower but way more comfortable. I long distance amtrak has dinning cars with food that actually taste good and those cars have a second floor observation dinning area and tge passenger cars are way better. Some amtrak trains even have car transport offered so when you get off you have your personal car with you. But yeah the tickets are just as expensive as a plane ticket.
JR pass is worth it! Form a base (somewhere to stay long term; id choose somewhere cheap) and start stravelling one area a day. :) and FOOD is so important! went to a 6hr ride to sapporo - realising that was a long ass ride with no food (for me); arrived super hungry (read:hangry) hahahaha -- Ahhh I would do it again!!
For the green seat foot rest, there are two sides. On the lighter color side, you are supposed to take off your shoe, the dark side is fine with shoe on .
travel tip for your viewers that are going to or from Tokyo (south) Southbound travel make sure to request a seat on the right side of the train for a nice view of Mount Fuji about 35-40 minutes out from Tokyo station. Northbound request on the left side forget exact time but about 70-80 minutes after departing Nagoya Note depending on time of year reserving these seats does not guarantee you a view as Fuji San can be quite picky about when she decides to show herself we have been by almost every time we visit and some years we only see the base as the peaks in the clouds!!!!
Hi Paolo thanks a bunch for the very helpful travel tips and awesome places and food recommendations. Love your vlogs. I'll be travelling to Japan again in March this time in Osaka, Nara and Kyoto. Im thinking of going to either Mt. Fuji or Hakone from Osaka can you give me tips on how to get there, and is one day enough to go around? Need recommendations please. Thank you and more power!
When I would travel and need to stay somewhere overnight I would go to the JR View Plaza and get a package deal. You can get a round trip Shinkansen ticket plus a pretty decent hotel room (my experiences were always for one night) for a little bit less than the cost of just the Shinkansen. Of course, it's not English language friendly to go that route.
Just a small suggestion can u change tokyo zebra website background to black because it will increase the readability. .. . By the way love ur videos.. . Video content suggestions 1) a day in a life of a student 2)education in Japan 3) vegetarian tips
I learned the big luggage tip on the train. I was attempting to squeeze it into the overhead area, until a local kindly pointed out the space behind the last seat. 😝

Great info, again. Just subscribed. Really wish we had high speed rail in the US! Seems perfect for destinations a little too far to be a convenient drive, but not far enough to make a flight out of it.
Mehhh. just fly
Honestly a like saver(I'm 14 and I only left my country once)
Took the Shinkansen with my mom to Kyoto and back last August 2018. A great experience overall despite the cost.
That trick with the rotating seat rows is actually so sick, we need to import that to Europe ASAP.
One of the best train experiences ever!

Hey, love this video. Very helpful! Can you please make a video about the JR Pass. Thank you!
I just moved to Yokohama and all this train hopping is new and crazy for me. Thanks for sharing this video bro👍
That food cart lady was SUPER cute! :D
So cool to see Japan thru your eyes!!!
Definitely you are more advance in many ways than 🇵🇷!!! Good for You!!!
this is so interesting things from japan
the trains in japan are super fast and great
we love Japanese trains running well functioned
Best timing ever, I'm going to Japan next Wednesday and will be riding the shinkansen a lot! Thanks!
Just returned from Japan. I bought a Japanese rail pass. It was great value, unlimited travel for 7 days.
Thanks Paolo, I'm planning to visit Japan by going to Universal Studios Japan by traveling round-trip from Tokyo to Osaka on the same day.
Very well done. My wife and I are visiting Japan next spring and your videos are an amazing resource. Thank you!
I love you dude.. this is what I need. I'll be going to Japan next week for my 2nd visit. If you are playing basketball still, We will probably meet on the court ;) . I definitely will buy you a drink brother. I appreciate you taking time and doing videos. Keep it up.
Thanks Paolo, I'll be traveling to Japan this May. Your info is definitely helpful, looking forward to the trip!!
JR Passsss!!! Get the JR Pass!!!
Have wanted to visit Japan for a long time. There are so many things i admire about the people and the culture. Your videos have been very helpful. We will go with some sort of group tour, as everything is so different from the states.

This is a really unique idea and helpful video for those traveling to japan for the first time. Thank you for thinking of us, Paolo!
It can be a bit daunting for those who have never been to Japan before, but Paolo's videos are great help! They helped us to before we started vlogging in Japan ourselves!
The hayabusa trains has luggage storage space at the back entrance... Good to fit 6-7 luggage only...
I think most of the Shinkansen managed by JR East has this luggage storage at the front/back
Great hacks..do more hack vids.
I rode the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and back in September. Awesome service and comfort.
If you have full size suitcases, get the green car. They have space for a few suitcases.
So basically if we are three people and order the last row we can just flip it, have 3 power outlets and store all our luggage in the gap behind us? That’s awesome! How do i choose my seat when booking?
Awesome video!!
I wish US would have something like this, Amtrak is so expansive. There isn't even a strain station in the city I live in.
The is the most helpful video on the bullet trains I've seen so far.
It’ll be my first time to travel to Japan end of the month and my first time to ride in a bullet train 🚅. This video gave pretty good ideas. Thanks!
Thank you for making good movies on RUclips all the time.
JR pass is worth it!
Form a base (somewhere to stay long term; id choose somewhere cheap) and start stravelling one area a day. :)
and FOOD is so important! went to a 6hr ride to sapporo - realising that was a long ass ride with no food (for me); arrived super hungry (read:hangry) hahahaha

Ahhh I would do it again!!

For the green seat foot rest, there are two sides.
On the lighter color side, you are supposed to take off your shoe, the dark side is fine with shoe on .
thanks, I'm riding the train soon!!
Wow this video came out just in time! Taking shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto tomorrow :)
travel tip for your viewers that are going to or from Tokyo (south)
Southbound travel make sure to request a seat on the right side of the train for a nice view of Mount Fuji about 35-40 minutes out from Tokyo station.
Northbound request on the left side forget exact time but about 70-80 minutes after departing Nagoya
Note depending on time of year reserving these seats does not guarantee you a view as Fuji San can be quite picky about when she decides to show herself we have been by almost every time we visit and some years we only see the base as the peaks in the clouds!!!!
Paolo ☺️👍 thank you as always. Your RUclips channel is GOLD. For a future tourist like me in Japan.
SNACKY SNACK!!! great tips, pitty we just got back from Japan ;)
Id love to see a more informative video for international travellers where it explains how to purchase upgrades while using the JR Rail Pass.
Good seeing you and your wifey by the Tokyo tower the other day. Thanks for all your help!
When I would travel and need to stay somewhere overnight I would go to the JR View Plaza and get a package deal. You can get a round trip Shinkansen ticket plus a pretty decent hotel room (my experiences were always for one night) for a little bit less than the cost of just the Shinkansen. Of course, it's not English language friendly to go that route.
thank you!
cool how its possible to turn the seat around :)
Im obsessed with your channel, thank you!
Just a small suggestion can u change tokyo zebra website background to black because it will increase the readability. .. . By the way love ur videos.. .

Hey there, super love the videos. Will be going in June and was wondering if you could do a language video?
Great vid! Thanks.. I knew about the plug outlet by the window and where to store larger luggage.. did not know that seats flipped! How cool!
I knew about all except the power outlets on the N trains. This is super helpful!
I love watching all your videos for tips when visiting Japan. Your excitement and the way you end food is great to watch. Keep up the good work Paolo.
I learned the big luggage tip on the train. I was attempting to squeeze it into the overhead area, until a local kindly pointed out the space behind the last seat. 😝
