When I see Andy McKee play, I am reminded about what it is to be a musician. I don't see a wannabe person who just wants to look good on screen or is just there for the glamour and fame. I see a person who is genuinely in love with music and has a passion for it. That is what all of us amateur musicians out there should strive to achieve.
@@n0sr3t3p I don't see any mention of "technical proficiency" in the OP, so your reply doesn't make sense. And in all honesty, technique and communication are inextricably linked....anyone who has paid close attention to McKee (or to his predecessor Michael Hedges) understands this.
agreed he's been my favorite guitar player since i was a little kid and my dad first found him on youtube and showed him to me, him and antoine dufour both
You know you've officially become masterful at the guitar when you can make you audience close their eyes and hear several instruments at once. Bravo, Andy.
Out of all the songs in the world to cover, Andy chose this one... I first heard this song when I was 5 years old. I am now 23 and every time I hear this song it never fails to tear me up. I think of all of the good times I had growing up in my life, the places I've been... This is proof that our existence, many things aside of course, is truly a phenomenon. Love always
Saw him live in Napa a few weeks ago. Best concert I have ever been to. He literally asked everyone to shout out their favorite songs at the beginning and he played almost all of them. It was amazing. I don't think he missed a note the whole performance. Afterward, he met with everyone and was the most happy and sincere performer you will ever meet. More of a fan than ever!!
The only thing more impressive than Andy's tone and his playing is Andy McKee the person. Having met and spoken with him many times and, being an acoustic guitarist myself, seeing his quiet and unassuming personality and the genuineness he exhibits in his acknowledgment and respect for other players in the genre has touched me and moved me even more than his playing- and you have to admit, Andy's playing is absolutely fabulous...
I am a fingerstyle expert so you can trust me when I say that this is an impressive arrangement and performance. The fingertone is also so good. He's not just playing the right notes but it has a pulsating feel to it and the melody still shines through. The approximation of this song is just uncanny.
Andy McKee is living proof that musical talent doesn't die with the ages, it just manifests itself in ever more diverse and wonderful ways. This cover captures the soul of the original, with a little bit of Andy :)
Man, I remember when I heard drifting for the first time when I had the biggest ego of all time and thought I was pretty damn amazing at guitar and no one could match my skills. Since then you have shown me that humility is key to being a great musician and that love and passion for what you do will carry you a thousand times farther than being arrogant and acting like a rock-star. You my hero Andy McKee, I'd love to be able to play with you and even if I never do in real life I still feel like when I play to your stuff or improvise various rhythms/leads over some of your songs I still feel your soul, you have a good one my friend. You play every song as if its your last, and I hold that mentality very close to my heart now whenever I play or perform live. I'm forever a fan of what you do and I can only hope that if I ever am fortunate enough to have children that they will be able to feel your love and passion through your music as much as I do.
+G mindfuckin6dimensions well said sir. My first REAL guitar teach; had a few prior, but this guy really taught me about the guitar, why we play things a certain way, instead of just how to play the instrument. He taught me that humility in life is key to always arriving at the next step. If you think you're already there, or at the top, then you won't be driven to go further, because in your head...you're at the top, and there's nowhere else to go. Always the student, never the master.
+G Tesseractmindblow What I love about this comment is I feel the exact same way. We thought we had seen everything on guitar then along came drifting and blew the door wide open. I have been a fan of Andy McKee ever since I heard Drifting and Keys to the Hovercar. When he comes to Ohio I am always the first in line. Amazing how much one man can change how you see an instrument.
to put out this much harmonic sound with a piece of wood and strings in your lap must be exhilarating for Andy - a rare talent indeed and a significant contribution to the world of music.
This guy never ceases to amaze me. He weaves an unimaginable tapestry of sound and makes this classic 80's tune not only sound beautiful and precise, but also manages to make it his own. Modern day Mozart of the acoustic guitar imho.
Its kind of crazy to watch him perform. None of his tunes are really left hand crazy because of how he uses open tunings, yet he concentrates so much on the left hand. The rhythm/percussion is inherent to his right hand. Amazing.
When you get this good, and you've dedicated your entire life to music and your instrument, I doubt you still stop and think "I'm good" but rather just try your best to deliver your passion and joy to your audience in the best way possible, while exploring the art of music further and developing as a musician even further. There's no limit :P
I'm very good, since I've consistently practiced since I was 7 years old (not bragging, just stating a fact), and I know that is I'm ever REALLY REALLY on one day, I will definitely be like "DANG, I'M THE FUCKIN' BOMB."

Incredible, absolutely incredible. Look at his eyes when he is playing! He plays with surgical precision. Saw him in Bremen/Germany this year, but never heard this one before from him. Awesome!!!
