This is a Kinetic wave sculpture made from mostly all wood. Each wave is driven by a cam that moves the wave both horizontally and vertically. There are 3 different type of fish, most of which don`t actually jump out of the water, but I like the look of them. Originally it was going to run only off a motor, but I don't like the noise so I made the motor box optional. As usual the gear template was created with Matthias Wandel's excellent gear generator software.

If you could film a "How to" video on how to make this, that'd be amazing! I've never made anything with my hands before... but this is inspirational!

Another idea....maybe add a sleeping fisherman with his fishing rod dangling in the air :) He's missing catching all the fish :)

Nice work! Those small motors are noisy, but for instance a NEMA 17 stepper motor with a TMC2209 driver is complitely silent.
Thank you for the suggestion! That little motor has the power to move everything but was always too noisy. I'll look into your suggestion! Thank you very much.

This is brilliant !! I am planning to build this for myself. Could you please tell the size of square box that holds the circular piece and the outer diameter of the circular piece? Does the circular piece have to snug fit the square box?

Great system, but I'm wondering what is the point of driving the second dowel (in charge of horizontal movement?) Wouldn't the first dowel, with the different cam profiles, be enough to drive the waves both horizontally and vertically? The second dowel is more of a guide than anything else, from my understanding anyways.
You are correct! Originally the second dowel didn't move, it was there only to support the waves. Then I realised it could be a support as well as spin. Because of this I can have fish on both sides jumping at slightly different speeds.

Thank you for your message! They look like locks! I never noticed that before. They are just rounded hooks in a small piece of wood.
@@rossmcsweeney Ah, couldn't zoom in enough to see that. Still a wonderful piece. My dad used to build dinghies a bit like that boat, and the whole piece brings happy memories.

Amazing. How is the boat attached?
Thank you! There is a small straight wire under the boat. It is not attached to the waves but it helps stop the boat from sliding off to the sides. The movement is too small to really knock the boat around much. After a while you might have to reposition the boat a little bit but it's a quick fix.

Thank you for your comment! I actually am thinking about writing up plans for everything I make but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm working on plans for a horse at the moment! When I finish that I'll come back and write up some plans for the wave machine.
This one is not too hard to copy if you want to give it a go. As long as you drill the hole in the cam exactly in the same spot for every piece it will work well. Make a box just a fraction bigger than the cam so the wave can follow it smoothly without falling off. You don't actually need the gears, but by putting them in I could make the fish on the other side move, also at a different speed than the other side.
I'll try and get plans done in the next month or so!

Hello! The length of 1 wave piece is 30cm. The length of the whole thing is 76cm across.
