Gorgeous prairie! Instead of spraying around those plants next year and possibly allowing weed seeds to germinate, I would just hit the plants with a weed eater a few times to let light in and basically pinch those plants back and let them bloom at a later time. Those plugs should be fine with the root competition. Plus if one plug dies, you won’t have a big dead spot there.
