    Leaving that stuff on the root ball is insane.

    Hello Dawn. My sister had professionally installed landscaping; unbeknownst to her, they left the metal caging around the root ball on. After a couple of years, the planted trees and shrubs all started dying. Unfortunately, this was after the warranty period so they had to pay for new plants. The new landscapers said the plants were dying because they left the cages all around the rootballs and the roots couldn't spread properly. I couldn't tell if your tree had metal caging and the burlap, but I would definitely get a second or third opinion. I love your greenhouse and gardens and look forward to your videos showing how to create beautiful containers. Have a lovely day!

      Thank you Ruth!! Yes it had a cage and burlap and we did remove part of the cage and burlap as well as all the rope!! Appreciate your comments 🙏🏻😊

    We usually take everything off around the root ball. We have left some burlap before, but it doesn’t always break down.
    Lovely annuals. I like the new tree.

    Hi Dawn! It’s always a sad day when a tree has to be removed; I play the denial game but eventually face the truth. Not sure about the cage, burlap stuff but will follow your experience. I thought “leave it to Dawn to create a beautiful space from a sad one”. Thank you and looking forward to the next segment!

    I saw on of Laura’s trees from garden answer who had a tree fall last year (I think) because the cage was left on so I have always removed all that stuff before and especially since seeing her video

      I do think I recall that video. It was a big pine tree and it had been in for years and all the stuff with that was supposed to decompose did not. All the trees we planted on our property we removed part of the cage part of the burlap and the rope and staked it, and they have all done really well. The first tree we ever planted here we followed the directions of leaving the burlap and cage on that tree ended up, not having a good system and died.

    I had a 10 gallon Eastern Redbud planted BY the nursery, in late April, however, I thought they planted it too deep and not checked it for root girdling. I dug it up 2 weeks later and found extreme trunk girdling (2 tap roots had dug into the trunk about 4" in the ground) as well as roots circling the root ball growing upwards. I watched a whole bunch of videos about how to remedy the problem and followed their lead. I have waited 2 months for the tree to acclimate and I will now cut off the 2 girdling roots about 1" in diameter.

    Why, why, why? The roots of that Redbud will eventually be stifled. It makes me sad that a nursery would do that!! On another note, your gardens are so beautiful!

    We recently had 2 trees about the same size planted, and they didn't remove the cage and I was pretty concerned, they just said they always plant them that way.
    I wasn't happy at all. We'll just have to wait and see how the tree does.
    Thanks for sharing this process with us!

      @@SeasonalDesignsbyDawn Additionally all the new trees in our new construction neighbourhood were planted with cages on.........many have died or are dying........ (planted last fall - we were told we didn't have to do anything to support them, they were fine.)

    I've heard different advice on that depending on climate. But I would still want at least the handles and rope removed. The Redbud looks beautiful!

      I agree 100%. I did remove part of the cage part of the burlap and the rope. I just cannot imagine how the roots would even spread out with that. Years ago we planted a tree where they told us to leave the burlap on but remove everything else, and when that tree died, we noticed that it died because the roots literally wrapped around and strangled the tree under the ground!

    Looking forward to seeing your garden in person in August. I agree with the comments about removing the cage. Everything I’ve learned in MG classes and from arborists says to remove it. We have several mature trees with badly girdled roots on our property that I worry about with every storm. I’m in SE WI.

    Hello There, I have just discovered your channel. I really enjoyed this video. I love seeing gardens in America and learning about the differences and similarities of gardening to where I am. I am in the UK - what part of America is your garden? I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You

    That doesn’t sound right. How are the roots supposed to spread? Seems like common sense. Hoping for the best. Thank you for sharing this. Continued blessings…

      I agree did not sound right to us and 100% against the way we have planted our trees for the past 30 years! They say everything but the basket will decompose. But we had a tree we planted years ago, where we followed those directions that didn’t make it and when we dug up the root ball, we realize that the roots really did not spread out like they should have. Thank you for your comment.

    I would definitely remove at least the string. Unless it’s a natural twine that will decompose quickly?

    • @SeasonalDesignsbyDawn
      @SeasonalDesignsbyDawn  4 месяца назад +1

      They said everything, but the basket would decompose. I get the feeling that the string tied onto the basket is to keep the tree somewhat steady in case of wind. But we staked the tree instead. Thank you for your comment.

    Did you call the garden center to verify what was said??

    • @SeasonalDesignsbyDawn
      @SeasonalDesignsbyDawn  4 месяца назад

      Yes, not only did we talk to them about it but it’s also on the directions and receipt for the tree! We did end up following our knowledge of removing part of the basket, part of the burlap and the rope and staking the tree. Of course I think the key is being very careful not to disturb the root ball which we did not. I’m starting to wonder if they put those directions on because some people are too rough when planting the tree? Just a thought.

      @@SeasonalDesignsbyDawn THEY GAVE YOU A GUARANTEE TIME probably knowing that the tree wouldn't survive, planted with all that stuff on. You would then go and buy another one; they get another sale....Hmmm, SOUNDS A LITTLE BIT SNEAKY TO ME.🤔🤔
