I love how he's tucked away into the (almost) middle of the game, seemingly as a random stepping stone to your next achievement. It speaks volumes of how he was significant in terms of damage and misdeeds, but insignificant in terms of worth and might and value. He wasn't a Lord of Cinder. You don't need him or his soul to accomplish anything. He was just another Heir of Fire, and you kick his ass and move the hell on.
I love the fact that Sulyvahn not just tries to protect us from PVP by sheer force, if you pay attention you see the first thing he does in the fight is to buff both of his freaking weapons to give us a demonstration of what we have to endure in PVP if we continue our journey after his jolly church. But when we don´t take him seriously he even goes so far as to literally ripping himself apart to show us what it´s like to be ganked. He makes so many honorable sacrifices (ಥ﹏ಥ)

For anyone who's curious about his wings it's because pontiff is half corvian. He's also half brich woman which explains why the wings look more like tree brances then normal wings. Apperently in a dlc in one of the games you can meet his brich woman mom, I don't know if you meet his corvian dad though.
I beat this guy the other day with no shield, just rolling and only with parries. Whew. Took about 20 tries due to fuck-ups on the parry timing but I really like this boss. Def one of my favorites in all of soulsborne
Ben Porter He felt quite easy tho, However the nameless king, twin princes, soul of cinder and dragonslayer armour... Damn those were way too hard for me.
Fun Fact: At some point during development, Pontiff Sulyvahn was supposed to be the final boss. A lot of his attacks and moves remained them same after they decided it wouldn't be him, which is why he's so challenging.
Holy shit, the end of the fight is synced up perfectly. The final fist pump, the victory text, and the final beat of the music, which actually happened to land at the very end of the composition, before it would have looped. That was so satisfying.

@@teewurst4630 There are a lot of crappy unbalanced bosses in the Elden Ring. Without DLC, ER, DS3 and Sekiro are still kings in their boss battles. I still love all these games.
Stuck on this guy rn. He has next to zero cool down plus he isn't wearing any shoes! Literally has no chill. Think I might need to level up. Even with my most physically resistant armor and with ember he 2-4 hit kills me.
Bart Stepien That's where I was until today. My build is kind of a hybrid of DEX and INT and I might have made the mistake of splitting my stats a little too much. I was trying to beat him with rolling and melee weapons + great magic weapon, but I could only get him to like a 5th of his health before him and his body double wrecked me. I ended up going hard mage to finally take him down but it was still a struggle. It's crazy to me how people say they got him in like 2 hours. He took me forever to beat.
beat this tonight, took me about an hour of attempts. i was using the black knight greatsword. i almost beat him about 30 minutes into the attempts but i choked and got killed when he had 2 hits worth of health left. Was tough with the great sword, if i didnt have a lot of experience from playing ds1 and part of ds2 and part of demon souls i can tell you i probably would have been stuck on this for like a week lol. I'm not gonna lie to you, i raged a lot trying to heal or get out of range only for him to fly over and start beating the shit out of me with a 3000 hit combo. Circling around him definitely seems to help a lot, dodge rolling directly away seems almost pointless with his sword range and speed. Definitely try to kill his clone as soon as you get the chance and take your free 2 hits on the shadow clone as he creates it but back away after that animation because he will tear you apart with the double offensive. hold the shield while you're circling around him too like in this video and dodge roll whenever appropriate every so often while youre shielding and circling so he doesnt break your shield. As you can see in this video, some of his attacks will just go right over your head. Best of luck everyone!
It's funny how I killed this guy (in my 40th try no less) with an Irithyll Straight Sword, which was the sword given to his knights. Talk about poetic justice. I was surprised he's affected by frostbite. My attacks did 139 damage on him. Except on each 3rd hit, which applied frostbite damage for like 300 damage or so.
Coming off of Dark Souls 2, after Vendrick and Aldia sacrifice everything to find another way and beg you to do the same, Pontiff Sulyvahn's rise to power and plan to wretch the Dark from its vast nothingness and caress it in his hands with Aldritch at his side is a fucking disgusting bastardization of everything those two stood for. What an terrifying yet perfectly evil monster.
One of my proudest moments in Dark Souls 3 is that I beat the Pontiff on my first try. I had heard that he was one of the hardest bosses in the game, so I did everything else that I could have done beforehand, so I went to challenge him after beating Yhorm. I was embered, so I got invaded on my way there so I made a mad dash for the boss fight. During the fight, my health was reduced to a point where I would have died if I wasn't embered multiple times.
After fighting Rellana head on, it really makes me appreciate Pontiff Sulyvahn way more, as both a boss fight and design. Clearly they took a lot of inspiration from his design and moveset when making Rellana, and managed to elevate it a lot. Makes me feel like I am progressing not only inside a game, but between them, as well - by fighting Pontiff, you are that bit more prepared for Rellana.
Is it strange that the Abyss Watchers took me over 30 attempts to kill, but I nailed this guy on my 4th try? I don't know, people say he's difficult but I actually found him pretty easy.
it was the opposite for me. I beat the abyss watchers on the 3rd try (being aggressive, not letting them fight each other) and this guy took me 9 or 10 tries. I bet him using that ice straight sword that you get from the miniboss guy, +2. I like it because it's fast and causes frostbite, but in retrospect I could have brought a much better weapon to the fight.
I beat the abyss watchers on my like 3rd try and pontiff on my first because the red eyed watcher went after me as well so it was a 3 v 1 on fast ass enemies like them, which is way harder than fighting multiple gargoyles or multiple giant sentinels
Felt so satisfying To kill him after like 3 dozen attempts as a intelligence/strength build. What I got out of the fight made it all worth it “Greatsword of Judgement” as it was just what I was looking for, and still remains my favorite sword in the game.

ザエオン For Dancer just stick to her ass. It works really well. After 3-4 hits go back to doge her Grab attack. 2nd and 3rd phase is simple with her if you stick to her ass.
For the Elden Ringians, yes, rellana is a Remake of Sulyvahn 😁
Similar concept, remake I’m not so sure
@@BeekoBagginstribute
They only look similar but they have a different move set. If anything he’s more similar to Radahn since he has a combo that is identical to Radahn
Of all the bosses of Dark Souls this is the only one with whom I took the bossfight as something personal...
For anyone who's curious about his wings it's because pontiff is half corvian. He's also half brich woman which explains why the wings look more like tree brances then normal wings. Apperently in a dlc in one of the games you can meet his brich woman mom, I don't know if you meet his corvian dad though.
He's from the painted world, which is where corvians came from
Explains why his face is just a bunch of roots. Nice
what??? lol. no.
@@kovacs4429 shut up
I beat this guy the other day with no shield, just rolling and only with parries. Whew. Took about 20 tries due to fuck-ups on the parry timing but I really like this boss. Def one of my favorites in all of soulsborne
I've beaten Sulyvahn by pretty much only rolling and hitting massively with my butcher's sword. It took me 5-6 tries.
Wolfrsmv Congrats
Ben Porter He felt quite easy tho, However the nameless king, twin princes, soul of cinder and dragonslayer armour... Damn those were way too hard for me.
I bet we have a pretty similar playstyle.
Did you have problems with SoC's "lance mode"? ^^
Discovering that staying on the stairs would make his attack miss made this fight a lot easier
Nice try Fume Knight, but I still recognise you.
Глеб Каменский I feel like pontiff is a bit easier than the fume knight
Глеб Каменский but he’s still a pain in the ass to fight
he's hard AF even without nadalia's help
@@skinnylegs5164 flaming greatsword and smaller sword... uses smaller sword to retaliate...
@@QuadLamb similar movesets as well, its just that pontiff does them much faster lol

Welcome back Pontiff Sulyvahn
Can we appreciate how fucking well you timed the fade out of the soundtrack when you beat him, together with your gesture? That was fucking amazing.
“One of your messages was rated” I laughed
Here is the moment you came for.

I love how unlike a typical sorcerer pontiff knows his way around a sword fight, to put it mildly
And also unlike a typical sorcerer, Pontiff has basically infinite stamina
*Ah, it's good to see a fellow Stand user...*
[Remote Romance!]
@@Sentinel145 So its the same type of stand as pucci
[ Holy Clone ]
Fun Fact: At some point during development, Pontiff Sulyvahn was supposed to be the final boss. A lot of his attacks and moves remained them same after they decided it wouldn't be him, which is why he's so challenging.
Damn i wanna fight him with all his attacks then
Took me 8 tries to defeat him guess this is what happens when you fight dancer on a lower level before him😂
4K, full screen, max volume = Epicness
Holy shit, the end of the fight is synced up perfectly. The final fist pump, the victory text, and the final beat of the music, which actually happened to land at the very end of the composition, before it would have looped. That was so satisfying.
You gotta love the peaceful silence you get Everytime a boss is killed
Ashen One with 2 phantoms: In the name of the Anor Londo Castle you're under arrested, Pontiff.
Sulyvahn: Its treason then, you can't arrest me Ashen One, I'M ANOR LONDO!
Ashen One: Not yet
Sulyvahn: *Ignates Magic swords and jumps towards the enemies screaming
This fight is perfect, the music and everything. My god
Watching this after just having beat Rellana to relive my old trauma too
2:16 - шикарно: музыка начинает затихать, Понтифик на секунду разрывает дистанцию, будто переводя дух - А ПОТОМ вдруг с новыми силами!..Божественный бой 👍👍👍
Some people hate this boss but my opinion h is one of the best bosses ds3 has to offer
Who hates the pontiff fight? I think you mightve just been seeing people talking about how hes a bad person and a tyrant
Oh by the way, this guy was supposed to be the final boss.
lore-wise would've been a waaaay better end boss than the amalgamation of fire-linkers
The best souls boss, the music, the setting, the fight. I'll never forget the first time I walked into that fight, and god damn did it feel amazing
Love how him smacking you at 2:28 synced with the music.
I find this boss a lot harder than the nameless king
Sakata Gintoki and here i am, getting killed by crystal sage about 15 times, and clear this guy about 3 attempt
+Anwar Hisyam I feel u man :P
Anwar Hisyam Really? What character build are you using?
blowskiol i dont really remember my build, i just use fallen knight set, grass crest shield, and astora straight sword. My build is focusing on str and endurance
same. got beat to shit by crystal sage and then easily dancing with pontiff damn it. hahaha. really hoping luck is on my side when fighting other bosses. haha
I just beated him yesterday and my heart still crazy beating when I see theres just 5 hits left to kill him...
The OG Rellana
The drop in his OST goes so fucking hard
got rellana to the half hp as soon as she entered phase 2 i alt f4 my game and came here cuz i thought i was in a wrong game she is literally pontiff just with a movment of abyss watchers
rellana is pontiff if he locked in
This was the boss I died to the most during my first playthrough, but I cannot call him the hardest because when I realized the trick to beating him, I beat him with little effort.
Care to share that wisdom
@@siraj_jr_ most of his attacks can be parried and reposted; his opening attack, the second hit after his thrust attack, and the overhead swing for example
Simply rolling to the left instead of the right when he attacks made my survivability go up a significant amount.
@@thisisscotts Do you mean his left? I lost like 10 times in a row rolling left, then won on my firs try rolling right lol
@@keatontatooles223 haha nope, definitely rolling to my left. Perhaps you and I perceive different timing for the invincible frames, so only one side works for one of us but not the other...?
Lady Friede was the next fight i had the most trouble with. That was a lot of panic rolling 😂
This guy looks so tame after elden ring
For real. In my memory he was one the coolest and visually most pleasing bosses in dark souls 3 but after playing Elden ring he looks really easy and almost boring lol. I guess they really stepped up their game again.
@@teewurst4630 There are a lot of crappy unbalanced bosses in the Elden Ring. Without DLC, ER, DS3 and Sekiro are still kings in their boss battles. I still love all these games.

Loved this boss fight, haven’t felt this exhilarated when fighting a boss in a long time
the Pontiff had Mimic Tear before it was cool😂👻
More like he had a stand from JoJo but he is so egotistical that his stand is literally just him LOL
A boss so confident he was waiting for you to make the first move. Because even so he will kick your ass.
He took me forever to beat.
he has no opening in his 1st phase, you got to parry him, then visceral
Bart Stepien if he 2-4 hit kills you with ember then you have really low health lmao
beat this tonight, took me about an hour of attempts. i was using the black knight greatsword. i almost beat him about 30 minutes into the attempts but i choked and got killed when he had 2 hits worth of health left.
Yep exactly right I took much longer than you to win but this was what I learned from fighting him aswell
Love the first time I walked up to him and his sword catches on fire so u know ur in for a fight
Ok weeb
no one mentions the fact that this guy perfectly times his celebration with the music at 2:55 !

Did he just summon a fucking stand
Stand Ability: Fucking show everybody what you're going to do 3 seconds into the future discks out for MIyazaki
Bepis No, he didn't. Doesn't even look like a stand.
is that a motherfucking Jojo reference?!?!?!
But what does a Stand truly look like? There was a telephone tower that was a Stand, a Gucci Bag was a Stand.
It's just an etherial version of himself. It's more of an afterimage clone or something, except it predicts his attacks.
Learning to parry this guy is so satisfying.
he is back boiss

One of my proudest moments in Dark Souls 3 is that I beat the Pontiff on my first try.
I had heard that he was one of the hardest bosses in the game, so I did everything else that I could have done beforehand, so I went to challenge him after beating Yhorm. I was embered, so I got invaded on my way there so I made a mad dash for the boss fight. During the fight, my health was reduced to a point where I would have died if I wasn't embered multiple times.
Nice job man, this boss fight is so hard.
Who's here after fighting Rellana? I can't believe we thought Melenia was hard😭😭😭
Man I'm in ng+7 and rennala hard asf
Rellana was tired of people bullying her sister
malenia is harder than rennala tho *edit oh rellana you meant. they're about even in difficulty, as in both are tough.
Yeah well, I havent played dark souls 3 in years so I wasnt prepared lol
Took me a long time to beat this boss but it was so epic, so much fun
Is it strange that the Abyss Watchers took me over 30 attempts to kill, but I nailed this guy on my 4th try? I don't know, people say he's difficult but I actually found him pretty easy.
Chris Dempsey I killed them both on first try? And it was my first time playing who knew I was such a savage
it was the opposite for me.
Pontiff is definitely way harder but the abyss watchers are no joke either
I beat the abyss watchers on my like 3rd try and pontiff on my first because the red eyed watcher went after me as well so it was a 3 v 1 on fast ass enemies like them, which is way harder than fighting multiple gargoyles or multiple giant sentinels
I beat Pontiff and Abyss Watchers both at 2nd try but they were very close fights.
Sulyvhan:Can you parry ?
Me: no
Sulyvhan:Top Kek
Felt so satisfying To kill him after like 3 dozen attempts as a intelligence/strength build. What I got out of the fight made it all worth it “Greatsword of Judgement” as it was just what I was looking for, and still remains my favorite sword in the game.
