Next Step Toward Word War III - Crimea Beach Attack

  • Are they goading Russia into striking NATO territory with the recent attack on a civilian beach in Crimea? Well, we don't know but it surely is a possibility. On the other hand, this might have been a military mistake from either the Ukrainians, or the Americans, or both. But what does it matter, now that Vladimir Putin has said very clearly how he views these systems (ATACMS) being deployed. Watch his speech during a recent press conference to understand what the interpretation of Russia is about the deployment of ATACMS systems.

You ask the right questions. The timing of the attack is a major point. Also consider past terrorist attacks of which there are several examples. The US is no boy scout and never was. Like a child caught red handed they have nothing to offer in defence.

Not everything in the military has thick armor like a tank. Things like SAM batteries. fuel trucks, troop transports etc. Those can all be taken out by cluster munitions. And there are some cluster munitions designed specifically to take out thick skinned targets like tanks as well. They work by finding the target with a laser range finder that scans a cone shaped area under it. Once it finds it it fires a H.E.A.T projectile at the roof of the tank, the weakest part of the armor.

    • @dinnerwithfranklin2451

There is no doubt, having listened to explanations about the intricacies involved in operating the different aspects of programming the targeting and firing of the ATACMS missiles, that US specialists will have been necessary to make it work. The targeting will not have been possible by the arbitration of the one who finally pressed the buttons. In essence this has been an act of war with the single intention to provoke Russia into attacking NATO targets, which act would then be used as justification to draw in NATO's direct engagement. So this cowardly terrorist attack was simply a very costly PR stunt and didn't improve a single thing wrt Ukraine's war effort. Most likely Russia will close the airspace over the entire area and hereafter destroy all foreign satellites and drones covering the area. Talk about the warhogs shooting themselves in the foot!

I think this time Pascal forgot to say something important. It has now been more or less established that Iran's missile attack on targets in Israel was designed to function as a pyrotechnic demonstration of Iranian military capabilities, to warn Tel Aviv and Washington of the devastating consequences for the Israelis of a larger regional war. Perhaps this attack by Ukraine against Russian civilian targets has a political purpose: to interfere in some way in the English and American general elections. The Kremlin will likely consider these elections when calculating the long-lasting effects of its response. What is the benefit or harm for Russia of reinforcing the power of the hawks in the USA and England now by giving them a platform and more arguments to decide the election based on hatred against the Kremlin? Is it better or worse to delay the response until the American and English elections are decided? Will the outcome of these elections be more or less favorable to the long-term interests of the Russian Federation if the response is immediate? These are more pertinent questions than those that deal with the possibility or not of World War III.

I know a little about the intelligence side of things, but not specifically about ATACMS. The modern battlefield is highly technological and complex. Even when conducting fire support ops with gun artillery there can be assistance from intel guys using data from satellites. Radar systems and satellite systems involving guys in the sky and on the ground help paint the picture of what is going on on the battlefield. This data helps artillery find targets, assess damage from strikes, and helps in IPB (intelligence preparation of the battlefield) used in mission planning. I was one of these intel guys when I served. We could be on the ground in Italy for example while helping missions in Yugoslavia. There are many teams involved with a variety of roles. It is much more complicated than G.I. Joe pulling a trigger and Wham!

They seem to be similar to the aircraft-borne German-Swedish Taurus missiles, which Chancellor Scholz is on record as saying that their use in Ukraine would require Nato personnel in their operation. This may be the result of warheads destined for the nearby airbase being intercepted but the timing suggests this was deliberate, analogous to the Israeli using a RUAF Ilyushin plane as cover in Syria. If anyone thinks Ukraine will seriously target “civilian beach goers” with ATACMS missiles, may I suggest you are deluded.
Ukraine tried to hit legitimate targets in Crimea, Russia tried to shoot them down. Those that got shot down, continued falling under gravity out of anyone’s control. Unfortunately for the holiday goers, they were in the ballistic path of the intercepted ordnance.
Perhaps next time don’t spend your holiday in a known target zone?

One missile veered off course, and a cluster munition deployed and detonated in the air above the beach. The missile did not even reach the target, and more than 150 people were injured anyway. The missiles flew at civilian targets. Initially set goals are easy to verify. This is FAR FROM the FIRST ATACMS missile hitting civilian targets and the civilian population of Crimea, Donbass, and the Belgorod region... It's just that this particular missile was so clearly captured on video.
The rocket flew exactly where it was aimed. The PLANNED deployment and testing of the cluster munition took place. Despite the deviation from the course, the cassette part opened at a predetermined time - in the CIVILIAN part of Sevastopol

My opinion is that the US side knows it is about to lose in Ukraine and is trying everything to justify escalation. Even if those particular civilians were not the intended target, there were no troops in that area so how could they justify using cluster munitions? It seems that the Zelensky regime is continuing to do what it has done since 2014: target civilians.

I’m not expert but as far as I know NATO missiles are integrated in the global system which monitors all and everything. To launch such a sophisticated missile which changes directions makes maneuvers etc. it takes a team of professionals and global coordination, takes in to the account wind, altitude, weather, atmospheric pressure, etc. traffic in the air(other plains, drones, what have they, to not hit them). As far as I know it is global system, with satellites and all bells and whistles.

War is not surgical. The individual event is not significant as there has been a case of civilian casualties in Belegrod. Part of Putin's play is the threat of escalation. He would of course welcome Crimea be off limits to attack as it would make it easier on Russian logistics. Random attacks on civilians do not move the needle. Even the 8th Airforce which conducted some of the most lethal strikes on Germany in WWII understood this. The Brits were a little more blood thirsty. Then again, they witnessed the Germans bombing and killing tens of thousands of British civilians first. Its easy to talk about rules of war when you have not been affected by it. I would hope the Ukrainians do not stoop to the level of the Russians. Its not worth the cost to your soul. However, I understand. I know from a person who has friends in the IDF who were involved in the first frantic days of Gaza. They stumbled upon a Hamas solider doing something bad to a twelve year old girl. They did not take him prisoner as they should have. I will let the readers imagination complete the picture of what happened to that individual. Could I have the strength to reimain professional if I stumbled upon the heinous situation I could comprehend? That said, these events in Crimea are few and far between. The vast majority of attacks were most certainly military targets. The most likely explanation is a misfire or a near miss that impacted the trajectory of the shell.
