    Hi from N.J. I bought John’s dvd when it first came out. I happened to have a large canvas and thought I would give it a go. To my surprise lt came out great. My daughter came over and said don’t paint over the under painting. She loved it. I had a large frame and just popped the painting against the wall in my studio. It is still there. I am afraid to finish it because I might spoil it. I am getting up there in years, so I might have to summon up my curidge and give it my all.

    You actually care about teaching painting and not just watching someone paint. So many instructors leave out the most important factors such as how the palette is constructed, used and why.
    Fantastic and accessable. Thanks.
    I always say, " Painting is, simple and hard, not complicated and hard. "

    Thank you, Eric. People learn the most when they're challenging themselves. This pandemic may have helped put fuel to the fire in need of something that gives us food to our souls.We strive for perfection when perfection doesn't exist which is what keeps it unpredictable and worthwhile. I do illustration and fine art and Plein Air painting I enjoy doing the most. BTW, I recently received an award for Most Popular Piece) for a plein air painting that I entered to a gallery exhibition.

    Just finished watching John MacDonald Poetic Landscapes video........great teacher, great communicator, really helped me a lot. I loved the interview at the end. Was very moving and demonstrated a ‘spiritual’ (in the broadest sense of the word’) underpinning that you see reflected in Johns work. Well worth the cost.

    Scolding masterful artists for working with the photograph is quite silly, they have so much experience of working outdoors that they can literally imagine how the light works and how elements coexist together in the environment. It's clear from John's work that he is a great master and it doesn't matter what his creative process is, the paintings are breathtaking.

    About the past and PleinAir, the Tonalists were painting that way and they included what most of us consider American Impressionists (most were atonalists, unlike their European counterparts). The Tonalist movement was something that had never happened before, and lasted over 40 years. It was truly unique. John's a tonalist. He is harking back to those years. Again, the Tonalist movement is something that had never happened in the history of art.

    So does he let the underpainting dry before adding color or is it painted alla prima?

  • @Shopgirl49
    @Shopgirl49 3 года назад

    Hi from Orlando Florida…watching this video was amazing and taught me how important the under painting is. I have a question though…is this particular color hue that was applied in different strengths to block in values a standard color to use for all landscapes? John… watching your video has given me a fresh new perspective and I thank you for that.

    When he says a camera cant capture the true essence of nature or our emotions, I'm assuming he is speaking generally and not including the great photographers. Edward Burtynsky, Michael Kenna and other's photos are more than a dead lifeless copy of nature imo
