It's wonderful for a 68-year-old Mexican-American like myself to see such great talent together. I can remember not to long ago when there were no major mainstream Mexican comedians, and the Mexican culture was looked on as inferior. Comedians like Paul Rodriguez, Felipe Esparza, George Lopez, Fluffy and others have done a lot to make things better for the Mexican-American entertainers coming down the line.
Inferior is the wrong word . Someone with inferiority complex (a victim) would say something like that . Deferent or strange sounds better . The Italians , Irish , Jews etc all had and still get the same treatment . You know what I'm saying .
I have never heard a non-Mexican person refer to Mexican culture as strange or deferent. They sound like words a professor would use to describe an insect species. I don't consider myself a victim and am just stating what I have experienced from growing up in the U.S. as an immigrant from the age of 6. Mainstream cartoons and movies for many years presented most Mexican characters as villains, thieves, bandidos, gardeners and such, from the Frito Bandido to the illiterate, thuggish bandidos saying "We don't need no stinkin' badges" No one disputes that. It has only been in the last 30 years or so that things have started to get much better for Mexican-American talent and that didn't happen as an accident or fate, but has to do with the changing demographics of America. I recognize that other minority groups have been subjected to similar treatment; I was just stating that things have gotten much better for Mexican entertainers over time because of better work conditions.
Maybe I haven't seen enough of the other comedians you mention, but I really dislike George López and the way he perpetuates stereotypes. However, I'm not Mexican American and maybe they're spot-on. I think the same of Mexican comedians who stereotype Mexican culture in Mexico.
