Also being 6'-3" and having recently ridden the Dune XR and the Dune RR I think it's safe to say that most riders of the XL frame are best off limiting fork travel to the 170mm spec of the Dune RR rather than the 180mm spec of the Dune XR. Keep the stem 35mm or shorter (and fit some higher rise bars if you must) but I'd agree that the chainstays are not long enough in relation to the XL frame's reach to run the fork at 180mm without feeling like you need to ride with consistent attention to weighting the front end (regardless of what you do with the cockpit). That's a riding position that some aggressive riders and pro racers seem to prefer, but I can't adapt to it. At 170mm of fork travel the XL Dune RR had a more balanced ride with good front traction, and a more synced feel in regard to the fork and shock bearing an equal amount of the work load (I rode with the shock compression one click from fully open on a 502 spring).
Also, Mondraker has elected to leave the negative air chamber volume spacer in place on the Ohlins fork. Those familiar with it know that removing it makes it more plush off the top and ride a little lower in its travel like a Fox 38. I prefer more support off the top instead of the added plushness, so I plan to leave the negative spacer in place and fit a 170mm air spring to a Dune XR while reducing the shocks coil spring rate to 480.

As to the bike. Interupted seat tubes don't play well with droppers. One Up would be the obvious choice and AXS alsmost seems like a lazy spec choice. How cleanly can you run a cable around that tunnel?

    Rob
I have watched the otb you suffered. The aches and pains take forever - I hope you have recovered -
It appeared to have happened because your weight was too far forward, then you turned the handle on downhill and perhaps braked, there was only one unfortunate outcome.
Whipping over small jumps, jamming the rear brakes, jumping technique and line choices make me worry about future risks.
We are not getting any younger - my sincere advice, no offence intended, in view of your very successful emtb channel; get a mtb coach (including trials type balance work, refining technique on dirt jumper) and really work on your technique (improve safety and test ride bikes), invest in fitness coach - just as important.
Great content and long it may last!

I love Mondrakers, but hate that they have short seat post insertion abilities limiting the drop of the seat length. This has stopped me from owning one. At the 11:10 mark you have the seat slammed and there's a good 12" of room still. The AXS post stack is high, but still plenty of room to drop . Too bad the shock mount doesn't allow for a longer dropper.
Also, it seems like your seat could go higher. During your hill climb it looked like you could get mor extension in your legs. Great video as always.

    • @boonemoose

Yeti SB130 "Lunch Ride" builds with their 10mm of extra fork travel were always similarly unbalanced on their XL frames in my experience. Not unrideable, but certainly felt as though the shock was overworked and the fork underworked. Spec'ing a longer stem rather than shifting weight forward and keeping the bar rise low only made it worse. It would be interesting to get Rob's take on the Dune R and it's shorter 170mm fork and longer reach -- and perhaps remove the negative volume spacer from the fork as that allows it to ride a little lower in it's travel while extending the effective reach a bit further. As an XL rider and long time Ohlins user I can say the difference will be more than subtle.

Cockpit choice is very personal so you shouldn’t really be negative about the bike for this. Everything is a compromise as you know as there would be 20 different frame sizes, coil springs and stem lengths. Sounds like the suspension is the issues on what should be a great bike.

  • @Stockfish1511

Seat tube height is a cancer for most big bikes because people who ride it are already big and tall people. They would feel like they lean to much on the bar. Im 203 cm tall and i fully understand this issue. My slash and rail have lower seatube height, but still put spacers under the bar and also changed from stock 27.5 mm to 40 mm rise bar and it felt much better. This bike would be terrible for someone like me with that seattube.

Even with 450 pound spring the backend seems to active. It really struggled to provide stability and grip. Given we have seen how good the DH rig tracks the ground and if this meant to be same, it would suggest further effort needs probably from a suspension specialist to really dial that back end in. Good video

Lovely bike, but to expensive imo. I have Gen 5 Trek Slash and gen 4 Trek rail both high end models. From riding an ebike for a while i started to come to conclusion, that light ebikes are maybe not the best way to go because the power of the motor also needs to be controlled on the trail. What does that is the weight of the bike, the heavier weight makes the bike stick to the ground and be smoother on the corners etc. On lighter ebikes, it feels like the bike is to light for the power of the motor and the speed that you carry can not only be controlled by the body. Personal opinion, but i think the light ebikes are not the best choice for super enduro. I think it works for trail bikes like something of Fuel Exe type because you dont go ham on those. But on superenduro its different story. Im kinda excited to see how Trek Slash + performs. It has more preferable geometry than Dune. Want to see it soon tested

That was my thought as well. Back in the 80’s when we would put long travel forks on hardtails, we would have the same problem. Also if you look at the Dune lineup, the other models only come with a 170mm fork. The front of his bike looks very high. I’m waiting for my XL Dune RR to arrive, we’ll see how it works.

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  19 дней назад +3

Not really. You’ll notice I dropped the bars on the steerer tube to preserve reach out the front stock bars I was running all the way at the top of the steerer tube (reducing reach somewhat).
Bar height is certainly something that I play around with a bit - on steep DH sections (that a bike like this is suitable for), at 191cm tall, a high rise bar helps.
The biggest thing I noticed was the Front Centre to Rear Centre ratio. My rider weight is placed much further rearwards due to the shorter rear centre versus front centre. My hips are quite far over the rear tyre, my torso has to compensate by leaning far forward to place as much weight over the front as possible.
Lower bars can help, but, at the expense of rider stability on steep DH sections (rider weight gets pulled forwards if bars are too low)
The weight bias changes per frame size, smaller riders get a more forward weight bias, XL riders get the most rearward bias. This can be mitigated with size specific chainstays.

Hey, how does it compare to the YT Decoy SN? I'm interested in both but unsure wich one to choose.

Sn for seat tube, rattle, visible motor, and torque curve

In many ways the dune is objectively bad imo (and I own one). On paper I would take the SN everyday.
However when looking at bikes I was unable to find any reassurance that the Fazua drive system is getting any more reliable. Many reporting multiple failures, long wait times for replacements, etc. When I tested a Heckler SL at a bike shop and the Fazua failed in the parking lot that was the nail in the coffin for me. That said it is possible to buy a spare system from Fazua to have in reserve if you really wanted. (Crazy idea but the peace of mind/minimizing downtime may be worth it)

    Have enjoyed the spot?
    Went on all known trails?
Sorry, but that "hard climb/though climb" is a no brainer and really don't use brain to climb that thing...
Next time you're here, I'll show you THOUGH/DIFFICULT climbs... that I doubt you or anyone will do with a castrated ebike

Nothing wrong what that. They’re trying to keep it under 20kg. That’s exactly how you do it

191cm 신장의 rob 에게도 불편한 시트튜브 스택 높이이면...... Mondraker는 도대체 무슨 생각으로 시트튜브를 저렇게 높에 만들어 놓은건가?? xc자전거냐?

    That motor noise is crap!
Who wants that if you want to go out, ride and relax?
If ZF can do it then WHY CAN’T BOSCH who’ve been in the game for years

The ZF motor isn't quiet, just a bit different (like a turbine), do you mean TQ?

To my eyes, the bike lacks "flow". And it's the bike and definitely not Rob. He's an elite rider.
