  • I'm doing outside renovations at my abandoned house in Japan and enjoy scenery from around the town of Ine, Japan.
    In this film: I will be changing the siding on the lower wall outside. I have chosen to install shou sugi ban, or burnt Japanese cedar on the exterior of the house. It's also called yaki sugi in Japan. It's basically a charred cedar wood that is popular on the exterior of homes in Japan. The material itself is pretty messy.
    This a DIY project that anyone can do.

    In general i believe this short movie is at least on par with other one actor movies like "Life of Pie" or "Castaway" if not far better, the director definitely has a lot of talent and i am excited to see his next works! :D

    This was a fantastically satisfying video. Just very calming, and soothing. you're just taking it a day at a time. And the insulation will make the house so much more comfortable. I know certain climates you don't want a ton of insulation keeping heat in. But I feel proud, watching you work honestly, and in your own way. Learning and growing as you go.
    One question: how do the Japanese handle cracked foundations like that crack I see next to the crawlspace vent? Is that just not a big deal where you're living? I'm so curious.

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, over time, the house has sunken a little. That crack is definitely a result of that. I haven't really figured out what to do about it or how to fix it. I've just accepted it for what it is. I have seen some houses literally put on jack stands and raised so they can repair very bad foundations... but those houses were completely in ruin. I can't see that method being very cheap.

      I totally agree about the screws being unsightly. On the upper part I had smeared them with black caulk to hide them but on the bottom I will paint them with black metal paint later to cover them up. I just didn't get a chance to for the video because it actually started to rain and never cease lol

    You had me at the espresso machine. Awesome.
    I did a similar thing with installing bespoke pieces of kanelite foam in between the hashira on top of the tsuchikabe (fyi you can also get kanelite foam with better insulation performance). I did a lot of installing bits of foam and found it to be a major time suck. Have you considered doing external insulation? If I could do it again, I'd skip inserting bits of foam and just wrap the whole house in full boards. Way faster. My latest video covers this. We did inserted foam and then external insulation. You might want to fill the gaps with expanding foam as well.
    I was interested to see the caulking under the housewrap. I used エースクロス011 気密防水テープ for the seams, but didn't caulk.
    It's a lot colder in Myoko than Ine, but I'm curious if you're going to upgrade the windows to something more modern.
    Sorry for all the comments!

      @DIYJapan  Год назад

      I checked out your video! Great work! The windows are probably the single worst source of cold coming into the house. I would love to upgrade them but they are huge upstairs. The cost is just too much right now. For now I am insulating the floors and cracks around the windows. I am sure you know as well as I do that the cold attacks from all angles and is a worthy opponent that we always lose against lol

    Really impressive editing and composition. To say I’m a little jealous would be an understatement! Serious question. How does the burnt wood stand up to the weather? It seems the burnt surface comes off easily. Does this mean it will degrade quicker than ‘normal’ wood? Can it be sealed to protect it?
    Have binge watched your other videos and am enjoying your progress so far. Amazing location as well!

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад +1

      Thanks! To answer your question, the initial burned outer portion will ''wash'' off with rain eventually over the course of 5 years or so. It will begin to expose the wood underneath that is, essentially, still ''baked'' but a little harder than the outer surface. That portion is less black and more of a dark brown much like a piece of firewood that doesn't burn all the way through. It's still tough and hard but doesn't have the really dark color. But eventually the sun will bleach that portion and it'll become lighter and lighter.
      There is a type of yaki sugi ban that is painted over with a clear coat to preserve the black fired area for a bit longer but the longevity is negligible compared to the cost. It will always end up looking the same. I might make a video showing some of the stages of the wood. There are plenty of homes around the town in various states of sugi ban degradation.
      Glad you enjoyed the videos!

      @@DIYJapan -Thanks for the explanation. It's kind of amazing it takes that long to 'wash' off and then end up the way you describe. This explains the look of traditional housing I've seen on my trips to Japan (especially in Kyoto) .
