    The first white product you used was actually grout. The black product is adhesive for plastics and ceramics. You needed tiling glue that is cement and rubber based. I would go nuts in Japan without any English reading products to buy. A grinder is best to cut out L shapes. For small strips, score it once and use a shifter to break it off.

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад

      My wife was with me, even though she has no knowledge of these products, asked the staff for tile adhesive. The white bag was the product given to us. The package literally translates as '' base material for tiles'' and uses phrases like '' adhesive strength is outstanding'' lol So many things went wrong with this situation.
      As for the grey paste, that is marketed as a ''One-component elastic adhesive for interior and exterior tiles''. The tiles installed are clay ceramic. So it is a more accurate adhesive for tiles. Trust me, it really is all confusing and frustrating because everything here has an ambiguous name and purpose. They basically market their product to do everything even if not initially intended to do that type of job. And nothing makes sense in Japanese when translated.
      Thanks for the tip on the grinder. I have since bought one and will use it for the next tile job!

    Oh yeah. I feel your pain. Doing a cement rendering project at the moment. Tried mixing my own rendering mortar but the sand I used didn't make sticky mortar and it just fell off the concrete walls. The sand they (home center) recommend is not graded properly so there are grains which are too big for rendering, you can't get lime to make a lime cement mix, and the list goes on. The pros in Japan are definitely not sharing trade secrets and I have noticed that the products pros can get, for example from LIXIL, are far better more extensive what we can get (and obviously cheaper). In the end I found a product which I had to research on the makers HP that I saw in the home center and forked out the money to buy it and it worked really well. Have seen vids on wallpapering with ladies holding the paper up with brooms; pros definitely don't do that. So spot on, never buy products with pics of cute kids and women on the front, the pro stuff is just in paper bags.

    Good video mate, you went full Bane, haha... Yeah doing tile work in general is anything but fun. It's amazing in a DIY how many tools you find that could help for a specific task but you have to weight up if it's worth buying them against a project budget. Of course that said an angle grinder comes in very handy with the right blades. Keep up the great work and keep away from that powder :)

    You are a very good guy for including such a deep, poignant anti-drug ad in your video. The more you know!
    Speaking of knowing -- one would assume to think that a product like tile mortar, made to stick tiles to the walls, would actually DO that, right? "Pro" or not, they should all theoretically do that so it's insane that some don't. I haven't done any tile yet here in Japan but those products look so alien to me -- the mortar and "grout" both. I don't believe I've ever seen or used stuff that is so gooey and smooth in my life! I installed rough slate floors in my kitchen back in the US and not only was the floor mortar thick to put on, but the grout was an add-water mix that was very gritty and went on like sandstone. I just don't quite get some of the products here. Makes me wonder if this is part of Japan's overall preference for new stuff and how fast things depreciate. Why is it so hard to have nice things that last??

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад +1

      Yeah, in the States it was sandy like you mentioned. This was like spreading Nutella on the walls lol.

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад

      I've never seen grout just degrade though lol but it would be more concerning if it were in the bathroom getting a dose of water ever day running down it. I've already researched new materials for the bathroom that will give me more confidence. I came into the kitchen project blind and that was my downfall lol I thought I could just find a good product walking into the store. Sorely wrong.

    Oh man, love the vague coke references - that's why the housewives are so happy. If you do any more tiling, I just used an angle grinder with a tile cutting disc. You can cut notches pretty easily and avoid the tile graveyard. Also, tile ace pro and 目地材 grout are cheaper at a pro 建材 store. You have to buy by the box, 12本, but it was half price compared to Komeri home center and had fewer housewives on the packaging. If you use a silicone sealant, don't forget to get one with 防カビ mold-inhibitors (mistake I made). gambatte.

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад

      I did buy an angle grinder but only after I did the kitchen. I'll definitely use it when I do some tiling in the bathroom. Thanks for the tips on the silicone! I haven't caulked anything yet but soon.

  • @BGP369
    @BGP369 Год назад

    Lookin good in the end. Hope you leveled up off that Cocaine Monster. There is an antifungal silicon product in home centers (various colors), which works very good as a replacement for tile grout - you can even apply it over top of tile grout after spraying it with a steamer to kill the mould. If you use only a pinhole, it should apply just enough. Do 1 direction, let it dry for a day, and do the opposite direction the next day. Minimal to no cleanup required. Maybe give it a go when the grout you applied starts to weaken?

    • @DIYJapan

      Might look into to that when I tile the bathroom. Always thanks for the many good ideas! Hopefully the grout won't weaken anytime soon. The grout sealer should preserve it for a bit... I hope.

      General tools like hammers and such at the local hardware store. Power tools I bought some used on mercari like the chop saw and power drills. I enjoy your narratives vs the bad vibes personified in those characters, haha.
    I did my backsplash DIY in a Herringbone pattern but pre cutting vs cutting as I go was a good idea in theory. I went w/ a single use tile saw which was a good remedy for tight cuts, but saved on waste scrap tiles.
    Where will you route the water supply to the faucets? did you have to adjust the goal height of the counters as opposed to what is originally installed?
    keep it up & be the BANE to bad design, hah

    • @DIYJapan
      @DIYJapan  Год назад +1

      Yeah, never precut everything lol I learned that a long time ago. It just takes a small deviation when laying down the tiles for you to end up with a huge gap lol I really want a tile saw... I am still looking into maybe renting a wet saw for the bathroom. I've heard of places that rent tools. ''heard'' but never seen lol . I don't think I want to do it this way again lol
      The pipes were run longer than needed by the plumber. Once the height and faucet are finalized I'll cut them down and run them to the faucet. You can use steel braided hose to run them easily to the faucet without the need for complicated piping. We'll see...
