Sampha: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bobby Carter | March 21, 2017 - "There's nothing new under the sun / It's never what you do, but how it's done," Nas rapped on "No Idea's Original."
Such is the case with the South London singer, songwriter and producer Sampha. His originality lies in delivery and tone, which is why he's been summoned by some of hip-hop and R&B's biggest names years before the release of his first album. (Kanye's "Saint Pablo" and Drake's "Too Much," for example, could have lacked emotional value without Sampha's contributions.) Sampha's music is more feel everything than feel good, which is why his fans hold him so close to their hearts.
The vulnerability on his debut, Process, isn't hard to dissect, but can be downright agonizing to digest; his immediate family has been riddled with disease and ailments, with both his parents succumbing to cancer. Process finds Sampha interpreting this complicated emotional prism - and confronting his own mortality through it.
Sampha stopped by the NPR offices to perform 3 tracks from Process. The result is a Tiny Desk Concert as intimate as it gets (and that's saying something). It's just him, a piano and these heart-wrenching songs that we reckon double as coping mechanisms.
Process is available now:

Perfect comment.
God I was scared he died. Stop making drama
Man I found this album the same day little brother went into this hospital last year. I was so excited to share it with him. Walked around the perimeter of the hospital for days and now I listen to this in remembrance of him. I love you Lil bro. RiP 6/27/19

Sorry for your loss, RIP to your little brother🕊️♥️

For rap fans: Sampha has blessed songs including Drake’s Too much, 4422, the motion, Wayne’s let it all work out, and Kanye’s best song Saint Pablo.
I found him because of saint Pablo one of my favorite songs of all time by any artsit
"Blessed songs", what is he a priest or something?
@@merlinmediagroup Yes

SAINT PABLO!!! On repeat for sampha’s vocals love love love this
If John Legend and The Weeknd had a baby, and that baby was raised by Frank Ocean and James Blake in London, it still wouldn't be as talented as Sampha.
Jermaine Smith I couldn't have said it better man👌🏿
This is the most brilliant description of his talent I've ever seen. Kudos, sir.
😂😂😂😂
hahahaha oh boy
Jermaine Smith what is weeknd contributing?...the hair
We've got to protect sampha at all costs
Fyodor says the white man... Go figure..
why not legendary? what is he lacking to you?
Stromboli too much skin color I bet. Lol.
Allright you win. I haven't been listening to soul/R&B for a very long time so i don't know that many artists, but Sampha did sound pretty unique and great to me.
and yeah Eternal Darkness you're talking out your ass.

Plastic 100C is such an incredible song. I count it as an instant classic
The only thing that makes me envious in life, is not having the ability to express myself through music like this. Breathtakingly beautiful.
Jamie Boyce good thing it's never too late to learn 🤙🏾

Your privilege is showing
@@alexisfrancine4545 Music is for everyone, what's privileged about having a piano in the house?
Maybe your poverty is showing, maybe it's about you, not about everyone else.
@@EtcEtcAndEtc Do we get to choose our conditions before being born? You were born with a piano in your house. All the guy is saying is you had the opportunity and choice of learning it that he didnt. Now its up to him to struggle and make it happen for his kids. Why so defensive.
I love the sound of the bench creaking as he shifts his weight, and the audible press of the pedal, and the dull tap of keys on the keyboard. This is so intimate and raw and transcendent
It's like his performing for you at home or something, I love it!
The audio engineer puts a lot of love into his work, it makes the concert feel that more real
I agree completely. Those subtle nuances make it way more personal and amazing imo
this version of Plastic 100C is transcendent. incredible
he sounds live better than most singers on their albums
switch the placement of the words "better" and "live" and youre good to go man
*better live
Holy shit his voice is incredible. Sounds almost identical to the studio version
Have you heard "Happens"? My gosh!

It's weird. I love the Live version but I hate listening to the album version (Blood on Me)
It's probably because I heard it here first.

BIG mood
i like my coffee black though :)
props to him doing this alone, most people usually perform with a band.
When he does songs live, he got a band. But this is still good
This version of blood on me is so beautiful
First listen of this live version and blood on me has left me breathless. Studio version seems... not up to standard anymore
how were his eyes shut 98% of the time.... just too beautiful
speaking out of experience, i dont know if this goes for everyone, but its so much easier for me to sing with my eyes closed while playing the piano
Speaking out of experience too. My eyes are usually just like shut but open lol
idk how to play but I once found an old piano outside a smoke shop and played it with my eyes closed and a joint in my mouth. I don’t recall what I played at all- I was just feeling it. I was told it sounded beautiful.. granted they were high too 😂
This is how I perform and dance its something different for sure
his voice is godly
softest heaven indeed
Sampha's voice accompanied me in a difficult moment in my life. He holds a special place in my musical heart.

As a man, Sampha always brings me to tears. He does the most shame.
when he says "you are my angel" at the end of Plastic 100º I realized that is the chorus of Treasure
After hearing Sampha on Father Time, I was struck by the softness and emotionality of his voice. So glad NPR recommended this to me shortly after.
Its like the piano is an extension of his body and voice! Fantastic!
liked video before listening.
update: did not regret
The piano intro to No One Knows Me Like The Piano 🎹 gives me *goosebumps*
Makes me cry

literally and ive heard it hundreds of times
The song Plastic totally makes me feel so fucking vulnerable..I hate it ..Too fucking deep..totally beautiful.
Sampha is great! Finally he is getting some deserved recognition stateside!
Process is the best album of 2017 so far. The fact that it hasn't gotten the press of Adele's and early Alicia Keys's music is really too bad. This guy is truly a great pianist and singer, not to mention a powerful songwriter. A seemingly introspective individual, I sincerely look forward to his future releases.

I really hope, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't.
His voice is therapeutic.. If you’re going through something it’ll touch your soul
This guy needs to blow up. He personifies what electronic/R&B should be. Beautiful, personal music that always has incredible atmosphere and engaging lyrics. Unfortunately, with an industry so set on making The Chainsmokers and Jason Derulo a thing, music like this comes around every so often.
It can not be personal 'coz it won't reach that many people that is why they use generalization. More People reached=More money
Sadly... Allthough you spoke truly.
The music industry is just bad and wicked in America it's just evil and pedophiles everywhere.
That Dude soon the good will shine so bright but will they love it or hate it.

Back here to show Sampha the love he deserves. His music has strong healing components. Truly moved.
My boyfriend introduced me to "No one knows me (like the piano)" and I recall that being a magical moment because, through music, I got to see his fragile side. Spotify decided to grace me with Plastic 100ºC and I'm in awe. Of course, I went to search for Sampha's tiny desk immediately.

Asmaa S. he's magical
His voice is so truly unique.
I love this guy...can feel his fragile heart and soul in his voice. It's like who told Winnie the Pooh he can't have no more honey?? Such a beautiful artist, just wanna hug him while he sings to me and I cry myself to sleep...
My only gripe with samphas album was that it ends eventually .....this dude is the greatest artist we have on this earth...I stand by that
Frank ocean is imo
i adore sampha but I’m gonna disagree there and say that there are better out there for one reason.. I love music with lyrics that aim to change the world in the drastic way that is needed. I’m an electronic music kinda guy so when I listen to a song with lyrics I want it to awaken the lion in my heart.. but for chill/beautiful sounds this is really good

I remember finding this tiny desk my senior year after finding out I wouldn’t graduate on time, and feeling like I had lost most of my friends and even girlfriend at the time(unrelated) listening to this 5 years later puts me in such a weird place I’m almost nostalgic of the beauty that this brought in such a dark time. Anytime I’m hurting I find myself coming here looking for beauty to get through the pain. Such an incredible performance and performer. Definitely top 5 tiny desks

Sampha is underrated. His music needs more recognition!
His voice feels like home to me.
he's got one of those magical classic voices that has like 3 layers to it.. one layer is a soft airy whisper on top of throaty high pitched falsetto thing then a dark chest voice hidden underneath it all ...so interesting to listen to
my eyes are sweating smh
What Sampha did here is truly remarkable. With only 15 minutes of his music, I already felt like I'd been with him along the painful process he sadly had to pass to finally get to this amazing demostration of what music really meant to be. Thanks NPR for all this concerts. Greetings from Peru.
