Uhm.. Gobots came out before Transformers, and they were also more original. I think they all had original designs, whereas Transformers original releases were all repaints of various transforming robot toys from Japan, like the Robotech jet that became Jetfire, and the micro change and diaclone figures. Learn your source before you make a video, eh?
@@mrg466 I agree with you, transformers was the better show and did more with their characters. I think it was a better concept than Go-Bots who were like... alien cyborgs I think? They definitely had organic brains from what I remember. But.. facts are facts. They came out first, they did NOT 'Rip Off' the Transformers.
To be more precise with events: GoBots ended in the end of 1986 because transforming robots in general were not as popular. Tonka replaced them with Legions of Power toys. Sadly those didn't do well either and only existed in 1987. Kenner purchased Tonka in 1987. Hasbro purchased Kenner in 1991, so with that got the Tonka and GoBots intellectual property, although Bandai still owned the GoBots toy molds.
Not only was the Gobots first before the transformers. Transformers also used the name megatron that was in the shogun warriors comics. Gobots also sued the creator of Mighty Orbots to stop them. Then Hasbro bought out Gobots.
You know what professionalism in voice acting looks like when you realize that Scooter and frickin' Megatron have the same voice actor -- Frank Welker.
Tonka got wind of of Hasbro's Transformers IP and suddenly imported Machine-Robo toys as Go-Bots. Transformers (which were all Diaclone/Micro-Man toys at the time) was conceived first, but Tonka released their robot vehicles before Hasbro
There was a company called Marchon was attempting to create their own transforming toys in 1982 and had talked with some Japanese companies including Takara (makers of micro man/micro change and Diaclone) and even had a TV deal for a cartoon before Hasbro bought the company. Just like they’d do with Tonka a few years later.
There is a GoBots magazine in late 1986 that came out that printed several stories that took place after this movie. It ties up the Rock Lords with Nugget getting the Rockasaurs to defeat Magmar. It also has stories of how the Guardians finally defeated Cy-Kill.
@@jjjsalang if you look in the Winter 1987 issue of the GoBots magazine, which was their last issue, there is a comic story called "A Spy Among Us". In the story Cy-Kill had Night Fright attack Super Couper and plant a bugging device on the Guardian. Cy-Kill used the device to overhear information about an incoming robot freighter filled with Zintrinium. As the Renegades continued to anticipate the Guardian's moves, Leader-1 reasoned they were bugged and was able to lead the Renegades into a trap in the freighter's hold by giving them false information. Once the Renegades were trapped inside Leader-1 had Scooter program the ship to fly to the Crab Nebula with the Renegade trapped inside. The trip would take years. That's how their story ends, with the leaders of the Renegades trapped in an automated ship headed to deep space and the Guardian having the last laugh.
The only thing i can thank Gobots for is reminding me that transforming robots aren't an original idea. Loads of other media have transforming robots like Mospeada, Macross, Gold Lightan, Dancouga, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Mighty Orbots, Voltron, Voltes V, etc. I myself have my own idea for a transforming robot series with the only differences is that they're not aliens, not full sized vehicles, etc. And i can assure you my robots have way better and creative names
I first heard about the "Gobots" in an episode of Cartoon Network's "MAD". In a parody of "Super 8" called "Super 80's", a Gobot appeared in one sceneand was mistaken for a Transformer by some guy, and was corrected by him saying that they're smaller and not as popular, but quickly began to cry, saying that he wished to be a Transformer.
Go bots is a transforming cartoon series on its own right. It was pretty entertaining itself.. so I don’t mind. I rather have it around or have existed than not.
I have seen trailers for this movie when it came out in theaters, and I saw a advertisement for it in a magazine that year too, and technically the go bit toy line came out before the transformers did💁🏻♂.
I remember first seeing a Gobot toy and thinking it was mindblowing. Sure they were small and the transformations were simple but they were diecast metal and like nothing we'd seen in the U.S. toy market previously. And contrary to popular belief, they beat the Transformers to market by several months. Had the cartoon been better, I think they might've survived.
You'll be kinda pissed once you learned it's Japanese counterpart Machine Robo which is the the name of the Toy that is localized as Gobots in the US. And Japan made an Anime based on Machine Robo simply called Machine Robo and it is 100x Awesome than it has any right to be Oh and the Machine Robo toys got revamped into Machine Build and Action Toys Machine Robo with more details, better articulation and really high quality. There's even an Option to swap parts of the Figures to look exactly like their Gobots version.
I love when people wo weren't born in the 80s tell us about the 80s lol!! I hate YT for this but Gobots didn't rip anything off...title is very misleading. Growing up we knew the differences between the franchises to know. yes transformers was much more popular with the original tie in comic. However in the 1980s Transformers were much more expensive and hard to find during the Reganomics era, so plenty of kids had gobots as stand ins for Transformers. So much lore, but calling the Rock Lord movie a rip off....no sir. Gobots actually had a much more coherent story than Transformers.

Sounds like a big upside to me!
And they were quicker to transform, made play easier
I saw this movie in theaters with my older brother. We, along with two other kids, were the only people in the theater to see Rock Lords.
Sounds like a special experience. Did you enjoy it?

Hm, interesting.
I have a dim memory of seeing this in the theater but I was too young to remember the plot.
Neat! I've still got an old Gobot in my collections, Spoons, and have memories of having the submarine when growing up

Interesting! I only knew about it because I randomly had some of the toys.
Gobots didn't rip off TF's actually. Gobots tv series was first, and TF's series came out shortly thereafter.
I'm the kid who got a GoBot instead of a Transformer on Christmas because, parents. But cool memories, anyway
At least the toys were decent!

Didn't this movie come out before the transformer movie...it wasn't a great movie but go go gobots 😂
I'd say the Guardians, I'd pick as favorites are: Staks, Pathfinder, Baron Von Joy, Zeemon , Defendor, Blaster and Van Guard.
