- This is a reading of the first study of Paul Jean Jean's 18 studies.
It's characterized by very demanding sostenuto playing----The extreme dynamic levels, the high tessitura, the wide intervallic leaps played legato at extreme dynamic contrasts, the demanding dense tonal focus and concentration; all this and more are emblematic of the French school.
There are a few instances of audio clipping--sorry about that. This mic is great---but this is the first time I've ever used it and I set the levels too hot---live and learn.
This study was played on the Lyrique 576 Bb clarinet.
Beautiful playing, as always!!
Thanks--that's very kind. Jean Jean--he's the man!
The man! Tom, are you still playing double-lipped? Sounds beautiful.
French embouchure---to be sure---I'm cut from the whole cloth of the great French school of the late 19th/early 20th century. Glad you like it. This piece is what French embouchure was made for---and it was written by one of those early 20th century clarinetists---who played French embouchure.
@@avarmadillo Thanks! I met Tom a time or two at music Ed. conventions, etc. Fred Lowrance is a friend of mine and he used to give me Clarinet lessons. He spoke of Tom frequently.
@@earlkliethermes9329 If you see Fred please give him my kindest and warmest regards. A great guy and fine player.
@@avarmadillo I sure will! He introduced me to you.
