  • Sometimes life throws you a curveball, and sometimes that curveball is a small chip on an otherwise fantastic ceramic mug. After spending months bringing this giant crab claw mug into the world, what is an artist to do? I’m so glad you asked!
Watch as I bring a handful of the Blue Devil edition giant crab claw mugs back from the brink of oblivion. Instead of shattering these slightly imperfect beauties, we turn them into something that is perhaps even cooler than the mug itself! Spoiler: we’re gonna make some sawdust with the Shaper Origin.
EDIT: The claw trophies have all found a home! Thank you to those who snapped them up!
As always, put questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them. If you haven’t liked and subscribed, please do - and better yet, share this with someone who you think may enjoy it!

Fascinating. Thank you for sharing your technique. I often get so bored watching technical videos but you are quite pleasant to listen to. Will be watching for the next release of the claws.

That's one good idea to use even the shattered pieces in a kiln, like they say, "Accidents can always happen" so always keep the best looking accident and throw a artistic spin on it

Another great episode! LOVE that you didn't give up on these and found a creative solution to repurpose them into something AMAZING! (I was on tenterhooks waiting to see how you were going to attach the ceramic to the wood base!)

Thank you so much! I spent days debating the best way to hold the claws onto the wood. So glad I opted for the epoxy dough!

Nice. I got a similar chipped mug from Frankie’s, 11th anniversary mug from shag and they sold it, added color to the area. It was on the bottom edge, but noticeable. I wasn’t asked if ok. If I tried to return, Frankie’s would just sell to someone else. And since limited edition, no more mugs. So not everyone screens out the seconds. Paid full price

Oh no! Sorry for the chip. It was probably too dark in Frankie’s to see it 😂

What an amazing way to save and re-purpose a piece! I really want to try making one (on purpose from the start 😂). Thank you for showing the process and troubleshooting, it's always so helpful.

Truly brilliant ... as always! So glad these found good homes. Any chance you could share the deets on that laserable brass?

Timing is everything, right? For those "in the know," this video comes at a very opportune time when many of us are trying to figure out what to do with a certain dud bowl. Regardless of politics, great video and demonstration of reuse.

Thank you! They sold quick (so happy!) - I believe I’ll set aside a few of the next edition to make into trophies

the filler in your epoxy putty is probably micorballoons - i buy them separately to adapt the ratio with epoxy resin for different viscosities. nice video as usual!

Yes! That was my guess, but I didn’t want to commit on camera in case I was wrong 😂

free form air... kinda like Great Stuff spray foam. I used to install stuccoed foam commercial signage with cans of Great Stuff, to hold the foam sign onto one or several steel posts set in concrete.

I was SO close to using great stuff foam! I even bought a few cans of it - I was concerned about it expanding either too much or too little.

If you tweeked the design you might could use that wall mount to hang the mug.

    • @vantikistudio

Perhaps that may happen on a future edition 🤔

Can I ask what the crab is under your Apple monitor at your desk? Is it just a toy or a ceramic piece?

Well spotted! That is a display model by a toy/model company called KAYODO from Japan. They make excellent reference models of many sea creatures

Got them on Amazon - search for Z-clip flush mount picture hangers. Lots of size and quantity options

Amazing use of the claw. What were the little holes in the base for?

They let me peek in to check how well the epoxy gripped the wood.
