- In this charcoal pencil tutorial, I show you how to draw a simple still life suitable for beginners.
** Materials Used in This Lesson **
- Pencils: Dark/black charcoal pencil (best to have a couple to work between) and a white charcoal pencil.
- Paper: any mid-toned drawing paper (I use a mid-grey but a mid-blue, green or tan would work too). I use a paper by Strathmore.
- Other: a bending stump, craft knife, sanding block (or piece of sandpaper).
- Online photo editor: I mention this in the video for those that don't have a Mac, iPad or photo software. Go here: pixlr.com/x/

You are one of a very, very few artists on YT who actually starts with the construction drawing. Most have already traced it or use the grid method. I love these. They are so helpful.
Well done. So interesting. So lovely. Carry on with the good work.
My Friday treat watching Phil drawing. Will try to do the drawing next. Thank you.
You are one of the best teachers on RUclips for realistic drawings! Every time I watch one of your tutorials, I get a better idea of how to make my artwork better. Thanks!
People would pay fees for what you are doing on RUclips or even less ... We are lucky to have found you... Thanks 😊!
Some would make it available on patreon page but you have given us so much for free without timelasp..... Lets appreciate that people..... And cliking like or subs feels so trifle to what you are doing...
Thank you Phil. Very generous of you. So easy to follow. I’m feeling more confident already

Great video! I appreciate the pace, the narration, and the fact you started from a blank page. Not a pre sketched pattern to follow. Thanks! Well done!
Definitely will watch after a nap. I am trying to fiigurevout however draw while flat in bed. With little muscle strength. Oh how I miss drawing.

This was such a great introduction to getting an accurate drawing. Definitely an important review of some techniques I'd forgotten and need to start back practicing.

I have never worked in charcoal before. Really like this lesson. I can see how it will help me as I paint watercolor. Thank you. This was so helpful!
SUPER! Impressive work and excellent teaching. Thanks a million. Gary
Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial as a amateur artist I find that working in light and shadows fascinating, will be giving this or something similar a good crack.
Terrific!
Your method of placing pieces on paper with squares & circles I foundinviting so on a grey page I did the drawing, really enjoyed it & on stepping back realised the paper was way too small for the piece, so this afternoon re started it on a larger sheet. Am hoping to start charcoaling it soon. Your teaching method is for me very understandable. Thanks for making it so easy.
Have nearly finished this exercise finding it a super exercise! Thanks.
Awesome tutorial and drawing. New subscriber.
I will certainly give this a try. Thank you so much ..

Please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see in future lessons, in the comments below. Mediums, subject matter, styles etc
I'd love to see a simple portrait in pastels. It would be nice to see how to get skintones.
Inspiring!
Great. I learnt so much
Great its amazing
Thank you!!!
Very inspiring
Phil; if you were to frame this image, how would you seal it for protection? Great work, thank you!
❤❤❤❤❤
I actually looking for digital drawing tutorial but this one is really helpful! I’m new to charcoal drawing and never thought the white charcoal as highlight. The other tutorial only use eraser. Is is because the colored paper? Thank you
The toned paper would allow for the white charcoal to create highlights on the paper. With white paper you're more likely to pull back highlights with an eraser.
Thank you very much dear teacher, I would love to know your name, for charcoal drawings, I had fun learning how to leave shadows and how to blur shades in black
What kind of charcoal you used, please mention.
How on earth have I ended up on your mailing list!!!!
I am enjoying these tutorials but with this one there's no original photo.
