I think this has very old roots in Europe. I remember watching this show called Mystical Britain and they did an entire episode about a burial pit outside a church and cemetery of an ancient town. The remains of the dead all varied in age and gender and were tossed in the pit at different times. The body parts were hacked to pieces and burned and all done after death. It turned out the remains were of people who were thought to be Revenants, entities of undead beings who come back to life to torment the living. As here the bodies were mutilated and burned to keep them from coming back to life to haunt the living.
