I planted sugar snap peas. I picked probably 6 gallons of them and saved for dinner. Made dilly beans. Froze 2 gallon bags. Then I let the sugar snap peas swell and we harvested probably 8 quart size bags shelled them and froze them. It has been an amazing harvest year.
My snap peas have gotten eaten by the birds. They have managed to destroy 50 percent f the little crop I had. Also the two tomatoes that had started growing, not ripe yet but looking rather nice....gone. I'll tell you Rachel there is no way I would spend this much money for vegetables in the store. LOL. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. Have a Blessed day.
In the UK we tend to put up strings or a net for the peas to grow up and cling to and it does produce more pods ive learned, the best pod is when you open it and it looks like bingos teeth off the banana splits. Squash bugs are the devil!! About 10-15 years ago we would use seven dust on our plants (not anymore) even that stuff didnt work on squash bugs they are horrible. Green peas are mu favorite. Your chickens are having an awesome time out there free ranging. lol Love your garden thanks for sharing. God Bless..... Mack
I grew both Tom Thumb peas and Lincoln peas this Spring in Louisville, Ky. The Lincoln peas are only about 24" tall and way out performed the Tom Thumb peas. Both were good but my Lincoln peas seem to be much more heat tolerant and are still producing even though we've had some temps in the lower 90's already.
I got my first Lincoln pea seeds from Migardener and they were awesome. But after liking their production so much, I searched online and found a lb of them on Morgan County Seeds for $2.30! I am planning on planting them again here in zone 6b mid July for a fall harvest. They mature at 67 days. Very prolific and heat tolerant.
I grew Lincoln peas 2 years ago and they were amazing producers, then nothing from them last year, so I decided to take the opportunity and try a new variety. My fall crop I'm trying the straight arrow from hoss tools
I love your videos. This was such a calming video. Thanks so much and your garden is beautiful. Even the curse of nature sometimes make appreciate the harvest more. God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
yes...garden villains i call them! Chased a deer out of my garden tonight! I had lots of peas in the Spring....I think I'll just plant snow peas next year to add in salads and stir fries. Lots of work for a small bowl of regular peas!! But still a yummy harvest!!
Love your channel. You have helped me outnso much this year stepping up my gardening game. And food preserving. I love your make it simple and easy attitude. I'm a mother of 3 under 5 years and need simple in my life.
Ahhhh peas :) super tasty when they come straight from the garden. I’ve just pulled my plants/bushes (?) as it’s the end of the season. My first pea experience. Made some mistakes but will definitely do it again. Absolutely love watching you channel :)
So thankful for this I have planted peas fro the very first time this year! NOW I know because of your teaching/sharing! Thank you Rachel! Have a blessed day!
Shelling peas are my favorite. In Canada I love the homesteader and green arrow varieties the best for large sweet peas that freeze well and keep their flavor.
I am new to your channel and enjoyed hearing your explanation of harvest time for the peas and your love of your garden shines through. The chickens must be having a great time free ranging. 💜💜
That 1870's Homestead Rachel, my dear friend, can do whatever you set your mind to even if it means trying over. You make me smile with the love you exude for your garden. I’m so impressed Catherine from Canada 🇨🇦
First of all, I have to tell you, you look amazing is this beautiful, simple white blouse! Ive been enjoying your frequent videos, sorry about the reason why, however. Your pea harvest is looking good! I’m happy for you to have such a great garden this year.
Every time I grow peas, no matter what the package says the height will be. Mine will be 2 ft higher. Drives me crazy when the plants reach the top of the trellises and grow 2 ft above that, then the wind blows the top 2 ft over the top of the trellises. Makes picking them harder. Then when I made the trellises 2 ft. Higher then they dont grow that high. I think peas are just smart ***es! At least I do get a good amount of diff kinds of peas.
Im growing a variety of shelling pea for fun this year. Its called tall telephone i think. But i just started to get some snow and sugar snaps because of the late spring season. Very excited.
Squash bugs are a pain.... but if you check daily and kill them it helps tremendously! I use a piece of duct tape on the eggs and lifts them right off :) the bugs I kill also ! The simple dawn blue dish soap will kill them as well diluted in water. :)
In the UK the pea variety Alderman is a taller type of pea which produces heavy crops of large peas so you might consider growing a similar variety in the space you have available. The disadvantage is they need supports to grow up which involves extra work.
Very good videos, im a beginner and want to learn more about planting and dont know much thanks for sharing tips. I wanted to ask you about that song you added to tour video, whats the Title and Artist? I also enjoyed the song .
I'm not a fan of peas, but I know what you're saying. I am growing kidney and pinto beans for the 1st time this year. Its exciting seeing all of the flowers that I'm getting, but it doesn't seem like its going to be enough lol
I love English peas, but never grew enough to even make a meal with them. My kids & I would snack on too many of them while out working in the garden, LOL. I'm looking forward to being able to garden again one day, and really love watching you in your garden. I know the shoots & leaves are delicious in a salad. I would assume if canned as greens, they'd turn to mush. But, would you be able to blanche and freeze the shoots & leaves to serve hot like you would the frozen peas?
My hubby has been making up a weed killer spray. It has really worked well on weeds like yours around fence, or in the walk paths etc. The spray is made with the following: 1 gal. Reg vinegar 2 c. Epsom salts 1/2 c. Dawn dish soap Mix together in a sprayer. Just be careful to not get it on plants you dont want to kill. We have put a second application on tougher weeds. Use when its calm, not windy. But at least it isn't as toxic as poison kinds of weed killers. And it has worked well for us. Works faster in the sun.

Thanks I have been trying and I also planted peas every 2 weeks in the same location

The garden and the light shining in are so beautiful. Looks like the chickens came back!!
Chickens did come back, all on their own. Maybe give them recess on purpose every now and then. They enjoyed 😊
The sunlight you captured in this video was lovely... very nice job! My peas are JUST starting to come on... weeeeeeee! :) (NE Washington state)
All you do for aphids is wrap packers tape around the stems. Works wonders.. same with ticks if your out I the fields . Tape around your ankels

One of the reason your getting slugs is because of the grass and weeds growing in your fence they love that environment
I freeze peas in pod in a grocery bag
Perfect the shell keeps from freezer burn, and no work

You should do a summer kombucha flavors video!
My poor kombucha has been ignored for the 10 days it may have gone too far and this is about the time I typically abandon it because I get too busy 😂

What kinda of peas are they ?? So far that been my favorite to grow that I snack on before it get into house mine are sweet peas
Tom thumb bush peas
I planted sugar snap peas. Wasn't sure when to harvest. Google says "when tender". They are not shelling peas right? Or are they?
Think Chinese pea pods. About that size.
My sugar magnolia tendril peas got really sour on my but my sugar snap peas came out really good. Not sure what I did wrong
Oh no I'm not sure
Do you blanch your peas before freezing?
No
Do you spread them out on a sheet pan and flash freeze?
Nope just toss in bag and throw in freezer
Thanks!!
I must have missed the name of your peas. Is it a bush pea?
Yes Tom Thumb
I’m fighting a slug and bunny infestation. The bunny ate my peas will just keep replanting. What do you do with your borage?
The Borage is just for beauty and pollinators
