I was happy to learn that starting this month Glenfarclas is finally being imported to Israel (and I sincerely hope this trend will continue, maybe one day we will be able to get a hold of Bruichladdich and even Kilchoman here). Following your malt review, I just bought my first Glenfarclas (10yo). Superb stuff! Thanks for the recommendation.
me thinks Ralfy had a few before this review ;-)
Really interesting. Ralfy, you're a good Whisky teacher. Slainte!
That sounds like a really interresting event for our next whisky evening :)
thanks for the review!
I mixed my GF 105 with the 21...as 21 was lacking i thought..it certainly improved it.Pity older whisky batches vary so much!😣
...very good review, Ralfy. I love your suggestion at the end, mixing the malts together. AND...it is very true what you said about the age of a whiskey. Older does not have to mean it's automatically better. For example: I am very much in love with the Laphroaig quarter cask, for which I guess they use a 10 or 12 year old malt...but then I was utterly disappointed with their 18 years old malt...far to overdone for my taste.
Oh...happy new year, by the way...and best regards from Macau, China.
Another Great review Ralfy!
Wow 12 years ago. I really fancy this and the 8, 12 ,and 15 . Lovely accent shame they won't unchilfiltre but at the price not complaining to much .
After all these years I'm watching your video. I bought a bottle of Glenfarclas 10yo, it'll be my second single malt and I'm very excited to try it, it's a pleasure to learn from you. Greetings from Brazil.
. . . happy to share the malt-moments.
Very entertaining as always, thank you! I was tasting some Aberlour 12 and watching the corresponding review (N° 638) and then I thought I might stick to sherry casks this evening and poured myself a little Glenfarclas 10... and wondered what Ralfy's review would be. So as soon as this video started I noticed a change in Ralfy's vibe compared with the previous review, and I wondered "Is he a bit tipsy?" Of course, I could be wrong... Not being judgemental here, I cracked up because I thought it was so funny. Anyway, cheers!
I had a glen cairn of this GlenFarclas 10 Monday at Caledonia, a Scottish Whiskey bar on 2nd Ave between 83 and 84 Street in NYC. Enjoyed it Very Much. A Malty Nose with a winey stewed fruit. Very Nice Mouth Feel with a Sherry Sweetness Mid Palette and a Dry Spicy Finish. Very very nice intro to GLENFARCLAS. Will be getting a bottle of the 12 in the spring. Mike
I'm sure someone else has already provided this update in the past 11 years, but I'm just trying the Glenfarclas 10 year, and the bottle is now tinted brown, just as the 15 and 17 year bottles are. Glenfarclas is my new favorite scotch brand (10, 12 and 17 year - all winners). I just wish the name weren't so ugly - "Glenfarclas" just hits the American tongue all wrong:).
Long before I saw this clip, I recommended pouring a measure of GF10 into a measure of GF105 to make GF 87.5.
It's quite good if you find the 105 too heavy or if you want a dram to start the evening with.
It also works when you add a measure of A'bunadh to a measure of Aberlour 12. I call it Aberlour A'Brucie.
I was going to buy Glenfarclas 10yo and enjoy some watching your review, but instead I got another Caol Ila. They were on the same price with the prom night reductions and all and peat and love won over adventurism. As usual! Next time! Cheers!
Thanks, mate. Tried it. Youngish and and a bit burning, but fine nonetheless. For this cheap price definitely worth it.
Hi Ralfy,
Love to watch your reviews.
I have both tasted the 10 yo Glenfarclas (40 %) and the Glendronach 23 yo (58,4 %) and for me it is a puzzle how you can give the nice but rather faint Glenfarclas (less than half the age and 2/3 of the alcohol vol.), a rating of 6 points higher than the Glendronach.
this is just my observation
you're very great man! I've just bought a glenfarclas 10y i'm gonna try it very soon!
there is the symbol of Sicily on the wall just behind you!!!
greatings from Italy!
vinko
The symbol whilst also used in Sicily is for the Isle of Man
I think he lives there
Highland Park was my favorite so far, but now its this... I think it has some more flavor in it, but its quite smooth IMO. Think I might have to try the 15yo when I have a chance to go look for it.
Ralfy please do a new review of this, it’s one of my favourite 10yr old whiskeys and would love to hear your up-to-date thoughts on this dram.
I saved a dram of uninteresting Bowmore 12 by putting in a splash of Glenfarclas 12. It made for a more well rounded spirit!
@ralfystuff: Thanks for your advice; I'll try that the next time when having the 105.
Good call. Thanks!
my friends said this is like drinking a thanksgiving dinner... i want to try it now... i see the maestro gave it 89/100 im gonna have to
Hey Ralfy I'm considering getting the Glenfarclas 10 because apparently they're selling special bottles that commemorate the 150 years of service that the Scottish Regiment made to the Commonwealth and I'd really want to get one for the fact that my grandfather served in that regiment in WWII and it'd be a nice thing to have for rarity sake as long as it tastes good. Have you had a chance to try newer batches of the Glenfarclas 10 and if so what are your thoughts on them compared to the bottle you had in this review?
I laughed pretty hard when you said owch at the end xD
I just got the 12 and its twice as good as the 10. Such an amazing, engaging dry fruit sweet flavor and its 43%. The 10 is good for easy drinking and getting introduced to this product then try the 12 and you may not go back. Will hopefully try the 15 someday.
If i had a gripe like the 10 if there is peat in it or any smoke it is very faint in the background but so what.
***** Which one did you like more?
***** I understand, I know the problem, I have way too many bottles open myself. I probably can't even finish all before they go bad at this point.
***** I am going to look for it, I remember seeing it in one of Ralfy his videos but I almost forgot about it, oops.
Thanks for reminding me.
I even liked the 8yo farclas!! Freshy whisky that I enjoyed a lot! together with bunnahabhain one of my favorite brands
Actually sipping now 8 year old.
Which to choose ? Glenfarclas 10 or Speyburn 10?
Excellent video.
Thanks from Oregon USA
Glenfarclas 10 for birthday #60, I will enjoy!
This one made me chuckle for some reason.. maybe I'm up to late . Somthing tells me he wouldn't give this a score of 89 now ! Would be interesting to hear his opinion on the deference in how its changed over the years and how laphroaig 10 and laphroaig quarter cask have changed because the laphroaig 10 has went dramatically down hill especially in the last 2 years to the point that after having 2 on separate occasions this year i will definitely not be squandering my hard earned cash on it again till i hear they have rectified the situation they should be ashamed of themselves for what they have dun to a once distinctive and excellent islay malt .
Have you tried the 18yo? Seems to be sold only in 1l bottle but it's not too expensive, really thinking about getting it instead of the 10, 12 or 15yo. What do you think?
What do you think about getting samples of scotch to see what types you like? Better than getting a whole bottle and not liking it, right? Freddie from NC, USA
Hi Ralfy, what about Glenfarclas Heritage. It's by far the best priced single malt scotch on the market. What is your opinion on this one?
Hi Ralfy,
I was given a Glenfarclas 105 (60%). Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find the right amount of water to add to it. I know that adding water is down to personal taste and suchlike, but I was, nevertheless, wondering whether you've alright tried it, and whether you could give me a point of reference. I've noticed that you add quite a lot of water to the cask strength Bladnoch in your current videos.
Thanks for your help in advance and regards from Germany.
@ralfystuff
yes i agree, but fortunately we've got some good online whisky retailers over here in germany doing their research ;)
Ralfy, I am planning a Christmas feast and have been batting about which singlemalt to serve. I'm thinking Glenfarclas 21 but thought you might have a suggestion. Look, I know this is all subjective but when you think of a "Christmas Dram" what comes to mind? By the way, there will only be four people present so I won't have to buy multiple bottles of expensive stuff. In other words, one expensive bottle will not break the bank. What suggestions do you have? What screams "Christmas!" to you?
I'm just getting into Single Malts and experimenting a bit. I bought this having read reviews and thinking this would suit my palate at the moment. Got to say im struggling a bit with it which is disappointing. I think the main problem is in the finish. I find it excessively bitter and dry, and its quite a long finish.
Im worried that if im struggling with this, then i'll struggle with a lot of malts. I guess ill just have to keep trying.
How ya tracking?
Try sherry or port finish or speysides like glenmorangie or glen moray.
Hi Ralfy
What do you think of Glenfarclas Heritage? Heritage is 30pound and the 12YO is 44,30pound here in Sweden. Which one is the "best bang for the buck"?
Thanks alot!
Jon
Recently bought myself a 25yo. You don't seem to have any reviews on the 25 or 30. What are your impressions on them?
Cheers from Canada.
Got a bottle of the 8 year old as a present, how does it compare to the 10?
I have a bottle of Glenfarclas heritage at home. It is readily available in Belguim where i bought it when is was grocery shopping in Bleguim. What's your opinion on that bottling of Glenfarclas? I myself find the 10 year old better.
My local liquor store only carries Glenfarclas 12. What do you think of the 12 versus the 10? What marks would you give the 12?
Hi Ralfy, I cannot find this one or 15 yos,but I found 105 1 litter on sale. Is Glenfarclas 105 a good choice? 60% Alcohol may too much, should I dilute it with water?
@ralfystuff How would you rate the 12yo?
It's not labeled. Is it non-chill filtered?
I wonder if Glenfarclas 10YO is still as good as 10 years ago. I've just bought it in Auchan for 129PLN what is equal to less than 24£. Thank you for great content. Everyday I am becoming bigger enthusiast.
. . . decent, but less complex.
Hi Ralfy
A near by shop has a liter bottle 12y (43%) for sale for only 30€.
Do you think the 12yr is totally different than the 10y or 15y old?
Thanks,
Are you going to the Isle Of Man TT this year?
Here in Texas, I can get the 12 year old for only $2 more than the 10 year old. Would you stick with the 10 or move up to the 12 for this price difference?
Ralfy, do you think there'll be a day when almost every distillery is focusing on craft presentation by excluding E150 and bottling at higher strength, and which direction is the whisky industry leaning towards at the moment?
And by the way, thank you for these vlogs and for being so incorruptible!
According to one source, 'Glenfarclas' translates as meaning: valley of the green grass.
there's a super cheap source for the 12 on amazon right now (in Europe)
N.B.: I usually experimented with 2:1 ratio to cut the whisky down to approx. 40%, but taste-wise I still thought it pretty alcoholic and pungent.
Hey ralfy Few weeks ago i went to this japanese whisky tasting at a dutch "japanese culture festival" anyway just wanted to say it was very enjoyable and the whiksy is seriously otherworldly a huge diffrence in taste and there was plenty to go around :-)
ow and im subscribed to you but i never get the new video's up on my mainpage as " ralfy's new vid" it does not get featured.. know why that is?
Ralfy any chance you'll review Sheep Dip 1990 Vatted Single Malt or Glenfiddich 14 & 18 or 21 yo, Here in NY Glenfarclas 10yo costs about $ 67, The price of Single Malt Scotch in NY is outrageous over inflated
wish i could find flenfarclas around here....i'm not a fan of online shopping....shipping costs are rediculous
what do you think of Glenfarclas 12yrs?
he ralfy, i like mixing my own single or even pure malts at home. keep taisting my good malt marauder!
I bought it 10 years after you reviewed this. Wonder what malt mark would you give it in 2022?
. . . 82/100
A snippet about Glenfarclas not covered by maltmaniacs (or maltmadness): If they're located in the Speyside region, why do they print 'Highland malt' on the bottle? Anorak info needed :-D
Ralfy, you gave this whisky a year ago 89/100 but recently at maltmaniacs you gave it only 82/100. Is the quality vary so much and going rapidly down???
ralfy, you seem a bit pissed here lol. greetings from dublin, im a bit pissed too with my glenfiddich 12 :-)
Rafly,
I'm looking for a real good single malt for sipping
Talisker 10 tough to beat
9 years later are we looking at the same quality when it comes to the 10 year old?
. . . no.
@@ralfydotcom
Is the modern one better or worse?
@@jjb2004mk2 no answer must mean worse i assume
Ralfy, the dead lion surrounded by bees is from the Bible. It's from the book of judges, and is from the story of Samson. He kills a lion, leaves its carcass, comes back to it a few days later to find that bees have built a hive in the carcass. I have no idea why a company would want to use that as a motif, unless they were comparing their whisky to the smoothness of honey, or the strength of Samson!
How is the 12yo compared to this one Ralfy?
Well Ralfy gave the 10yr 89 and the12yr 85... Interesting because the 10yr is actually my biggest consumption Scotch whisky. Very drinkable and value priced.
Gelnfaclas 10 or Arran 10? I can't choose I think my two favourite 10 year single malts. Both great value . Go home ralfy you drunk lol
You look like you have a certain glow about you in this video Ralfy! Had you been sipping a few more than usual before this review!?!
one thing I don't understand...what is the point of even having a 10 year old when I can get the 12 for a few dollars more? Perhaps they should have started at 12, then 15 then a 18. Or start at 10, then 14 then 18 or 21.I bought the 10 to start with in January of 2014. Aside from the cork breaking into little bits in the bottle which was a big disappointment, I may try again...the blue canister I believe is the 12.
Funny that, I had a cork break in my 15 year old. Maybe Glenfarclas need better corks. Living in Speyside my local bar has a great selection. One night we tried the 10, 15 and 21. We both thought the 15 was the best by far.
unixnerd23 I've had the same issue with the corks on the 12 yo, the quality is indeed not that good. But the whisky is the best I've tried for this price tag.
This looks like it may have been about 5 review on in the same evening! he looks wasted!! :D
lol yeh he's very social lubricated here.
Omg .Ralfy look as pink as the bottle. A Half pass sober
there actually is no caramel in the whole glenfarclas range.
What about reviewing Amrut single malt from India. I have heard that this is a good whisky however it should be a big no no as they don't sell it in India. What a shame for them and then they consider themselves as Indian. What a joke.
Judges 14:14
And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
King James version
The lion with the bees is a reference to the Book of Judges, Chapter 14, Verse 8 : "When he returned later to take her, he turned aside to look at the carcass of the lion; and behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the body of the lion. 9So he scraped the honey into his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey out of the body of the lion.…" Seek and ye shall find.
I bought the 12 year old, my first Glenfarlcas - an absolute shocker in my opinion, smells of bland nothingness, golden syrupy taste enhanced by a whole load of sulphur. The sulphur has gone down since I opened it but it seems so engrained with the texture of the whisky that it just lingers on and on. I have seen on other sites its going for about 22 Euros in duty free, and I wouldn't even pay that. Definitely not worth 36 quid, which is the Waitrose price. I will be very wary of this brand from now on that they seem to think they can offload their, frankly, crap on people who they probably think don't know better than to just lap it up.
give it more time, let it 'settle down' in the bottle and try again. Good luck.
Ralf thanks for that tip, after a week it has cleared-up a lot. Its a really dry one and maybe not worth the money they are charging but certainly different :/
+ralfystuff should you get the 12 yo rather than the 10yo if you can?
bollocks
