Liars!!! We are not fighting over language! Who in the world fights over such? We the English speaking Cameroonians are fighting because we no longer want to be under the regime of a dictator. We own almost 70% of the countries wealth but we dont partake in the enjoyment!! We have oil, gold, iron ore, diamond, boxide and in terms of food we have it all. We feed the nation and the touristic sites are all ours. We are just two regions out of ten, but we own the wealth of an entire nation but yet so poor! Our president who has been in office for 37years uses our money to pay France!!! He and his government loots our money to buy property abroad and save the money in foreign banks. To make things worst if you are English speaking you are a second class citizen. You cant secure a job or any opportunity and are insulted at every given chance. The discrimination is so bad i could spend a whole day narrating to a non Cameroonian. They just lie and lie about the problems and confuse the rest of the world!!

All this started because Southern Cameroon and Eastern Cameroon were separated for about 50 years and governed by two different countries. That time was enough to create two categories of people under one flag and this difference set the stage for what is happening today.

You have gun-toting US nationalists ready to go to war to ensure that English remains the primary language even though the United States has no official language spelled out in the Constitution. Do you actually believe the issue is English or Spanish? Language is often a lightning rod for much deeper social issues. Look at what is happening in Cameroon within that context.

I can say that the Anglophone problem is a very serious issue in the country. It was said that the officials refused access to the Northwest and Southwest regions where most of the brutality and abuse of civil rights take place. What we see in this video is what the government wants the world to know. The English speaking part of Cameroon has just finished observing a 2week ghost town because of all this brutality. If the WP was given a chance to go to Bamenda or Buea and see all the damage caused by the military I bet there would be some more help coming into the country
People are living in fear and insecurity at this time. Most schools are not functioning: the government is monitoring the phones of civilians just because they do not want the images and information to spread. In 2017 there was a complete cut out of WiFi and internet connection in the northwest and southwest region because there was circulation of images of the truth that is going on in Cameroon. The government literally cut the internet supply to these parts of the country that were hurt the most.
The government will only show you what they want you to know. Please look deeper into this situation and help our country Cameroon anybody who reads this. Kids are dead and some don’t have the opportunity to go to school because of this problem.

Many English speaking Cameroonian want to remain Cameroonian, what about them? And for the French speaking Cameroonian who are not comfortable with their government, is also war the alternative?
Here in Canada we have English and French, like Cameroon. We however can get along, where the French minority are given equal rights because of the fair democratic process. In Cameroon, they could have what Canadians have, but due to the government's problems they can't get along. It's really sad to see a country so similar fall into chaos
Québec will become independent. It's only a matter of when. And it'll be a mess because the Canadian government modified the law which now only says "a majority is required in the referendum." But what's the majority, 50%+1, 2/3, or 3/4? Nobody knows.

That is the reason for previous conflicts in Africa, but not in this case, Anglophones have economic problems, we have been complaining without fighting, but when they gradually start trying to change our English heritage to French, it was clear they had crossed the line

The worst part is that the administration would fire any civil servant who has ties with the anlophones or speaks up for the anlophones . My dad being married to an anglophone was one of the unlucky ones who got fired .the worst part is we can't leave the country or else we will go start to jail

Africans fighting over linguistic divisions based on foreign languages
As an east african , i find this extremely bizarre.
A Cameroonian right there. The problem is deeper than just the language. That just a grotesque summary of the situation. We have been colonized by two different countries for more than 60 years, although we were sharing almost the same customs, traditions and values. When the anglophone regions decided to join the french speaking part of the country to become one and united Cameroon, they were joining their brothers indeed , but it was like having a lion and a leopard in the same cage. They are both big cats, they don't hurt each other, but because the lion (francophone ) is bigger and more powerful, it tend to eat almost all the meat that is provided to both of them, and the leopard (anglophone) feel frustrated . I don't know if my comparison is making any sense lol.
This has been the situation in Cameroon since the independence from France and UK. In the anglophones regions of Cameroon, you will see teachers, judges, policemen, that the government send, and who don't even know how to speak a single word in English. How can they serve the population ? Anglophone people are just fed up to be marginalized, and as a french speaking Cameroonian who have all the privileges, I totally understand them.

Kenya is a bigger player than Uganda ( no offense if you are coming from there), and I'm 80% sure the former Kenyans will consider themselves in a certain way most important, and their way of thinking and seeing things will be applied in all the new country. Former Ugandans peoples will be at some point obliged to speak Swahili, which is most spoken by people from Kenya.

They used to be part of Nigeria prior to Indepence. There was a time we shared the same political party called National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) from 1944 - early 60s I think.

People are getting confused and keep thinking that this is an issue with the language. It obviously has a deeper reason than that. Please do your research before typing insensitive comments. Paul Biya has been in power for too long selling our country to France. We are still using the franc cefa which means that 50% of the revenue of everything we sell goes to France. Getting rid of Biya is nearly impossible given that there is no real voting system or democracy whatsoever. Cameroon is still no different than a colony. This is not something that happened overnight. The anglophones want to separate from Paul Biya and his predominantly francophone government. We have never been hostile towards the anglophones and were living in peace until now. The problem with Paul Biya concerns the whole population. I think instead of trying to leave the country we should unite and create a rebellion against not only the dictatorship, but also France and the Cefa. I hope one day my fellow Africans will wake up and realize what is good for them. Secession is not the solution.

The franc CFA (you can't even spell it right) is not a way to "get 50% of the revenue" to France. You are just very bad at economy if you truly think that. Sure the franc CFA countries need to deposit some reserves in France to back the currency, but it doensn't mean those reserves are donated to France. Like your money that you stored at your bank still belongs to you.

@@sharefactor I haven't studied economy so I'll admit that I am probably not that well-versed in the ins and outs and the details. But my point is that France is taking advantage of Cameroon and Paul Biya is letting them to fill his own pockets. The country is impoverished and so much is being stolen. It's nearly impossible to change the president as it would not help France at all and therefore they make sure he stays in power when clearly no one wants him. Those laws we have are pretty much forced into us since the president is, I quote, "France's best student" as he said so himself. I would understand that the English part would want to leave. There is no English representative in this defective government so why do they have to bear with this just because they didn't have a chance to become independent in the Foumban conference of 61? Even though they said the reason was that it was not economically viable, the only reason why they didn't become independent was because England and the powers of that time wanted to shape the decolonization in their favor. The English folks were promised things that they never received by Ahidjo and if it weren't for the fact that they didn't want to be completely absorbed they would have probably joined Nigeria. There would be no English Cameroon and no Ambazonia. I still think they flared up mainly because of Paul Biya's incompetence and mediocrity.
As a UK born beginner in the French language, I sincerely hope that the parties can come to some understanding. I would love to visit this country.

The people from the Anglophone speaking area in Cameroon have always been marginalized but it's been getting worst in recent years. I think part of the problem is the stubbornness of long term dictator Paul Biya to relinquish power and allow people with fresh ideas to take over. The only way is some form of autonomy for the Cameroonians in the English speaking areas otherwise a full blown civil war is inevitable. It's also very important that the international community take this seriously as war in that area of Africa could spread to other regions that are already dealing with different forms of insurgency. There is the Boko Haram militancy in northern Nigeria and also the separatist movement by the Ibos in the south. Plus neighboring CAR is also dealing with it's own religious war that is yet to be resolved.
This whole conflict is very interesting, but why exactly is the divide over language?

As a Nigerian Igbo living in the USA 🇺🇸. It pains my heart seeing that the nation Cameroon 🇨🇲 is possibly worse in condition than Nigeria 🇳🇬. Not saying Nigeria isn’t a bad country though. But the Cameroonians have gone through much worse and yet nobody seems to care. I hope and pray that God will seek justice to towards the British and French colonial masters that caused these situations all over Africa. These people resemble Nigerian people in language, accent, looks and culture. Would it not be wise to join an extremely powerful nation like Nigeria and enjoy their protection from Cameroon as well as close cultural links and join the already present heavily federalised Nigerian system which offers a lot of autonomy. I have so much to say about this and I know this is not the best platform but i will still say something that i believe will help someone out there. As i victim of war, ones whose family has been killed i don't and will never support war. WAR IS NEVER AN OPTION. IT'S BETTER TO LIVE IN A SITUATION WITH ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES THAN A SITUATION WHERE OUR LIVES AND THE LIVES OF OUR LOVED ONES ARE AT RISK. People sleep at night fearing they might not see the morning life is precious, lets say NO to war and try to live peacefully with one another.

It seems like this fight is over that two countries basically unified, and the French speakers feel that they are bigger and better thus operas the English speaking population who is smaller. Then the English speakers revolted, and the French speakers went crazy and started killing civilians
Mostly correct, except, the countries came together with the agreement that it will be a federated system in which each part will retain some autonomy. But the bigger part systematically eliminated the autonomy. After complains were ignored some elements in the smaller part declared independence and the government went crazy ...

I am not a cameroian , but I studied there for 6 years, and I witnessed the discrimination between the English side and the French side, And i can tell first hand that the anglophone are treated so badly, and that was way before what is happening now

Nope. Colonialism has nothing to do with this. It is oppression from their francophone countrymen. The Brits and French didn't ask Paul Via to rule the country since the 80s. Neither did the west ask him to oppress the anglophones. I suspect these tensions run along ethic lines. That is the vast majority of African, heck human tensions. The Frenchies are of a certain ethnicity and the Anglos are of another ethnicity.

In our country we have different language in every state (more than one in many state) still we're together. We sometimes make fun of each other's language & traditions but at the end of the day we're united. I hope they solve their problem peacefully.
We actually have more than 320 languages in Cameroon but this video didn't bother that state this, language is far from being the problem here
@@camaro8148 My brother, language is the complete problem, not the ethnic languages but the official languages, if we spoke French we would be well integrated at the highest levels and we wouldn't have the economic problems we have now and hence no conflict, the problem is only a fool will switch from English to French in Today`s world

@Xenoverse Swahili isn’t even native to the people of Cameroon 😂 It’s just best to speak the language that has been the lingua franca of the country over the last 150 years. Same goes for latin america, they are made up of different ethnic groups but in the end unite under a colonial language
@Xenoverse That makes no sense, yes swahili may be from Africa but it has no historical or cultural importance to the country of Cameroon. That’s like making Belgium, which is divided by Dtuch and French speakers but to a less violent extent, make them all learn and converse in Romanian, a language that no one in the country speaks unless they are immigrants from Romania, similarly to how no one except immigrants from Swahili speaking countries speak Swahili in Cameroon.

More than 5000 anglophones have been killed, not including those in remote villages where the people have no means to tell the world what they are going through.
