    A great comparison Ted, thanks! And those landscapes - so punchy and sharp, love them. The area is so exotic and alien looking compared to where I live, I'd love to shoot there some day.

    Ted, no apology necessary for the longer video. Great breakdown of two awesome cameras! I was very fortunate, about a dozen or so years ago, to be able to purchase a Leica MP (film) through the Leica a la carte program. At that time, Leica's two rangefinder offerings were the automated M7 and the purely mechanical MP. The M7 was configured much the same as the M6, but with aperture priority; and, the MP shared the 0.72x viewfinder of the M6/7, but had the rewind and advance (albeit single stroke) levers like your M3. Given that I liked some features from each camera, I couldn't decide between the two. So, when the a la carte program was launched, I designed an MP with M6/7 style advance and rewind levers, and an M2 style 35/50/90 frameline finder. Love that camera, and have had no need to shoot any other film camera since. I really enjoy your videos, Ted!Just one question, the jazz guitar background music...was that you playing? If so, nice job, and if not, nice choice! Take care, brother, and keep posting! You're the coolest. I want my TedTV!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      Wow, very cool about configuring your own Leica. That's wild, man. Yeah, I'm really happy with the combination of these two. I do love the flexibility of the M6, but honestly shooting with the M3 feels a bit more free. I'm determining the exposure before I even raise the camera to my eye, so once I am looking through the viewfinder, all I'm thinking about is composition/framing and focus. When I see the exposure arrows light up in the M6 it subtle makes me think about exposure once again before shooting. It's a small thing, but I have noticed that. But it really is a small thing and there's not a single thing to complain about with either of these bodies. But man, to customize your own Leica, that's gotta be amazing!
      No, the music track was just a royalty free track. But thanks man, have a great weekend!

    Hey Ted, thanks for a nice video and for your time. I liked your input on those two cameras and agree with you on most things. I just wanted to point oiut that most M3's (un less otherwise modified) qill not focus to anythong closer than 3 feet wheras the m6 will go as close as 2.3 feet which accomodates most of the lenses you could throw on an M body (other than some Leica's 50 and 35mm). Not a deal breaker when shooting digital (croping in post prod is easy) but a bit more of a tedious job on analog when you want very close up portraits or particular details on any subjects (sculptures, flowers, wooden objects etc). Keep up the good work. Thanks :)

    Hi Ted. Great video. I had both the M3 and the M6. Both amazing cameras but I have just sold the M6 because like you I do like the simplicity of the M3. To me though the main thing for me is the perfect build quality and solid feel of the M3. The brass body of the M3 gives it a heft that no other camera has in my view, along with the fact that it is a legend of a camera.

    Ted, I own a M3 DS and a two M2's. I have never owned a M6. I prefer the M2 over M3: I like the look better, the viewfinder, has 35mm frame lines, my versions have no self timers. I think the most simple out of the M line. Reasons I cannot rationalize a M6: it is not made of brass, top plate not engraved (purely aesthetic but hey), shape and look of advance lever. Do I still want one... well yes. HA HA ... Thats what happens when you start shooting Leicas. Thank you for the fantastic video!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      Man, I know what you mean! After I bought my first M6 and my Summicron 50, I thought I was done, completely satisfied. Another three M bodies and 2 more Leica lenses later..... Okay, now I"m done. (yeah, right) That's very cool about the M2. Yeah, that's a beautiful design. I'll probably won't use the self timer too much. But yeah man, great stuff! Thanks Jesse!

    As always, fantastic video Ted. Thank you for taking the time to point out the differences. I am saving for one of these two models but I sill can't make my mind up which one to choose from as they both their advantages and disadvantages. Man they are both so beautiful cameras. I like the M6 for its light meter and 35mm frame lines but the double stroke, brass body, .92 view finder on the M3 are very attractive also. That said if I can source a .85 view finder M6 then that would be sweet also. I don't know perhaps start with the M3 and develop my light reading skills and then maybe one day get an M6 or vice versa. Anyway thanks again for sharing. Keep up the great work. FYI as beautiful as the music was I did find it a little distracting, your voice is soothing enough Ted no need for music IMO :)

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Michael, thanks very much, man! Yeah, you know you really can't go wrong with either one of these cameras. I know at the end of the video I did say that if I could only have one I'd choose the M6, but to be honest about that, I kind of flip flop back and forth. They are both amazing cameras and very rewarding to shoot with. As far as the meter issue.... I really kind of prefer not having the meter 90% of the time. If you do get an M3 and just go out shooting during the day, using Sunny16 rule, you'll be surprised at how much of an expert you'll be in no time shooting with the M3 and nailing your exposures. Yeah, I normally don't want to use any kind of music on the videos. On this particular one, it seemed like I was taking a long time going over all the features of the camera and just thought maybe if I kept the music low enough in the mix, it could help that footage be a little less painfully slow. Ha! Anyway, I doubt you'll hear much of that kind of stuff in future videos. Thanks man, I really appreciate it, Michael. Have a great weekend, man!

      Ted Vieira Hi Ted, thanks for getting back to me. I accidentally missed your reply. Cheers for your comments, I could see myself switching between both of those two cameras if I had the pleasure of owning both also. It's great to hear that you enjoy not having a meter 90% of the time. I have been practicing the sunny 16 rule on my two Fuji bodies lately and have been surprised how many times I have guessed the correct exposure, it so much fun that sometimes I think I can't take the shot due to limitations but then remember I can push the ISO if I really want to lol. Can't wait to get my hands on the M3. Thanks again. Have a great weekend and keep up the fantastic content.

    The filmspeed memory dial at the back of the Leica is for DIN and ASA.
    As you might know the Leica is a German design; all parts are made
    according the DIN standards.
    After 1970 the film industry no longer indicated the speed of the films
    by 100 DIN/10 degrees, but just by 100 DIN.
    An exception is the tripod socket of the Leica, which is made according
    to the English BSI standard, being 1/4 inch Whitworth thread. Some
    Leica Visoflex houses have two different BSI tripod sockets: 1/4 and 3/8.

    Maaaaan! I love your videoes! I have a black M6 and a late M3 (single stroke) myself. You are right on point with your thoughts, in my experience. Except that you can "multiple stroke" most film Ms. They just stop when they have advanced a frame. I actually prefer double stroking my M6. (Now that just sounded nasty. Sorry about that...) I actually have the original manual that came with my M6 (german guy with mustache using the camera inside it, haha) and it states clearly that you can double stroke it, or use the amount of strokes you wish. :-)

      Oh, very cool, man! I hadn't thought of that, but I know someone else had mentioned that before and it just dawned on me how that could work. It was some unsold merchandise from a camera store owner in China. Very cool looking through the literature. Thanks man!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад

      Hi Andrew, thanks very much! No, I'm still love and am very dependent on my Fuji gear. It's still the practical choice for my client work. Sometimes I'll need to throw shots and artwork together in a matter of hours for a client. Or I'll need really close up macro-ish type of shots for product photography and I'm not gonna get that with my Leica's. Plus most of my clients, although they love my personal work, usually feel that color photography is better for their image. Fuji makes that extremely easy to do, and still more enjoyable that shooting with a DSLR and that kind of setup. But for my personal work, yeah, film is my medium of choice. It's what I'm most passionate about, and that's more of what I want to do with this channel - just share the personal stuff that I'm really passionate about. But man, I do love Fujifilm and will still be talking about them as well.

      Hey Martyn, yeah, Fremont Street is a great place to shoot. A lot of characters down there. More old-school Vegas. If you're on Fremont in the touristy area it's very safe. I kind of think of it like it's Vegas' Coney Island kind of scene, but not as cool. But yeah, safe. The main risk is just somebody spilling a drink on you (or your gear). ;)

    Hey Ted, another great reason people often overlook the value of a light meter is if they don’t use filters for bnw photography. Red and yellow and orange, that sort of thing - and they all cut varying degrees of light, which all needs to be taken into consideration when metering via sunny 16 etc.

    Hey Ted - I've always loved your videos man - you're the smoothest talkin dude on the net. This is not a criticism, but I'm a little confused. A while ago you were saying the Fuji X-T1 was your go to camera - like me you just loved it. Then shortly after you bought the X-Pro2 and were very happy with that. This is a logical change and one can't be criticised for that. I did the same thing, updated my X-T1 for the X-T2. However, now looks like you have flipped to film and now you are posting the merits of Lecia cameras. My question - do you just use these film cameras for small personal projects, and still use the Fuji digital for all other work, or have you completely swapped over now?

    The right hand plug is for M synchronising with a flash bulb, which has a lag of 5-10 milliseconds before reaching its peak, whereas the X or electronic plug is for a flash that gives an instantaneous peak value.
    The long burning PF bulbs can allow synchronisation at all speeds, whereas the X synchronisation is often limited to 1/60 or 1/125th if a second

    The other connector on the back of M3 is for flashbulbs. Back in the day, flashbulbs were common, but they were slower. So, when you used that connector, the camera would send a signal for the flashbulb to fire a little bit earlier than with the other connector to make it coincide with the open shutter. If you had the flashbulb connected to the other plug, it would have fired later than the shutter.
    (edit: grammar)

      Hey Farouk, I really love Summicrons. More affordable than Summilux but still so much beautiful image quality. You don't have to go with Leica. You can save a lot of money with something from Zeiss or Voigtlander and still get great image quality. And whenever I buy anything Leica, I'll always look on the used market. You can save a lot of money, their stuff is built so well and most Leica users tend to really take pretty good care of their gear. I bought both my Summicron 35 and 50 used... both two of my favorite lenses I've ever owned. Keep an eye on Keh.com/ and usedphotopro.com/ both very good reputable used sellers. Takes the fear out of buying used gear online.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  4 года назад +1

      Hey, very sorry for the delay, just getting caught up on everything. Yeah, the light meter on the M6 works well. It's a center weighted meter and it only draws from the batter if you've advanced the film lever. At that point the meter is active until you take the shot. To be honest though, if you get an M3 and get used to self evaluating your exposure using sunny16, that kind of thing, you'll be fine. I've got a few cameras that don't have built in meters and it's helped me to get much better at determining exposure without a meter. Fun stuff!

      Ted Vieira Hi Ted, no problem, thank you for the reply, I have a Rolleicord with no meter and have got great results, your podcasts and RUclips videos are great, keep up the good work.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  4 года назад

      @@jeg569 Yeah man, you know, sometimes I even get better results when I determine the exposure myself. Especially with the M6. I mean, the meter is very reliable, but sometimes there is something in the scene that I want to expose for, but since the meter is heavily center weighted, it might be thrown off a bit. Plus there's just something liberating about controlling every part of the shot yourself. You don't have anything electronic telling you what to do, making you second guess yourself. I don't know, just reading this back it sounds like I've got personal issues. ;) Have a great week, man.

    you can double stroke on the M6 too. You don't have to go the whole stroke. on a different note, my friend has an M2. Mechanically, that camera is on a different level to my M6. It's more solid and feels smooth. The M6 is good and hard to imagine another level better, but the M2 is and I imagine the M3 will be the same as M2.

I love my camera, I really do but I would also love to upgrade and get the new features and the 4K video for when it's needed. I know that a good glass is always more important than the actual rig, but I just wanted a second opinion. Thanks!!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Miguel, just depends on what you need most right now. Would you benefit more from having the 16mm lens, having shots you really need that lens for? Or would you benefit more from the added features of the X-T2 - the higher resolution images, joystick, faster AF, better continuous AF, etc... It's a personal issue, but hopefully this way of thinking about the choice might be helpful? Which would you get more enjoyment, more benefit from right away? Then whichever one you buy first, you can always pick up the other item later. ;)

    Ted, I'm currently a student studying Cinematography in college, just getting started in Film photography. I'm finding it hard to get the grasp of it, I was wondering if you had any tips or starter advice?

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      Hey man, very cool about your studies. As far as stills photography, do you shoot digital now and are just looking to get into film cameras? If so, a lot of the same principles can be applied. Just really understand how exposure works, working with aperture, shutter speed and your ISO or film speed. One thing I've found when shooting film after shooting digital is I need to be much more aware of the light when shooting film. Because there's no way to get an instant preview of what you just shot so you've got to be a little more aware of everything before you press the shutter release.
      As far as film types, there are still a lot to choose from, in both color and black and white. To know what kinds of films you might like, you can do a search on sites like Flickr or 500px.com for search works like Ilford HP5, or Tri-X, ACROS, etc... a lot of photographers will have tagged their images with what kind of film was used. You can start to get a feel of which films you might want to try. Or go down to your local camera store and hopefully they still stock film and could give you some good suggestions. Then just try a few rolls and you'll start to figure out which film is best for you.
      You can develop the film yourself at home, or you can send it off to a lab. Hopefully there might be one locally that you can use. I like to develop my own. I actually enjoy the process, and am too impatient to wait for a lab to send it back.
      If you're just starting from scratch, without a digital photography background, then just really dig into the basics of photography. There are a lot of videos on youtube here for that.
      RUclips stuff to check out:
      Matt Day's channel: ruclips.net/user/mattdayphotofilmshow
      Here's a playlist I've added to from time to time about film: ruclips.net/p/PLbvRRm0CnUHQcwXd8SWnj8_TH0Ubxtub4
      Anyway, yeah man, hopefully this helps at least a little. It's a broad subject and hopefully these resources can help you more. Feel free to let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll help if I can. Thanks!

      Ted Vieira Thanks Ted! That really has helped me a bunch!
      We shoot strictly ISO 400 B&W film so I'm trying to bear that in mind as much as I can. The course teaches us all about film, we even have a dark room which we can use whenever it's free so developing my film myself is not an issue, only thing is that they don't really show you how to get to grips with it, more throw you in headfirst. I used to shoot digital and still do, but I just love the world of analog and want to be a part of it.
      Thanks again Ted, your channel is a great help!

    Hi Ted , what is the most suitable viewfinder size for Leica M6 on 35mm and 24mm lense? 0.72 or 0.85? Thanks

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      From the information I've seen, here are the frame you'll get with those to choices:
      Standard 0.72x - Combined 28mm & 90mm, 35mm & 135mm and 50mm & 75mm frames.
      Standard 0.85x - Combined 35mm & 135mm and 50mm & 75mm, and 90mm frames.
      I've never shot anything wider than 35mm on my M6. Not sure if you would need an external viewfinder. Wish I had more experience in this area, probably best to check out the rangefinder forums. There will be a lot of shooters there that can probably give you solid information on using the 24mm.

    • @BoWasHere2
      @BoWasHere2 7 лет назад

      If you're patient, you can find M6s with a .58x viewfinder which would be ideal for a 24mm lens. The .58x has the same frame line configuration as the .72x but it lacks the 135mm frame lines. A 24mm lens would be a bit wider than the 28mm lines but with the .58x finder you'd have some extra room around the frame lines to compensate.

    • @jrodori
      @jrodori 4 года назад

      Ted Vieira I should’ve known. The desert landscapes seemed like something out of a red 25 filter, but the skies and vegetation were too light, which threw me off. You’ve also mentioned that you use HC-110, which also helps with contrast. Your compositions were nice.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Ryan, after the negatives are dry I'll scan them with an Epson V600, using the native Epson software. I've heard the newer models might be better, but the V600 is fine for me for now. I'll bring the TIFF files into Lightroom in case I need to tweak any of the images. But since I've been shooting film I do much less post adjustments in LR; maybe a slight exposure adjustments, or bring the blacks down a bit, recover some highlights. But all very minor or else I start to lose that look that I love about the film stock in the first place.

    • @Kdkjdjewerdnxa
      @Kdkjdjewerdnxa 7 лет назад

      Damn, same scanner, camera and lens but I feel like your pics just look sharper? Maybe it's because I shoot mostly color and the scanner seems to have some jpeg artifacts and a lot of noise.

    Ted - I am really enjoying your videos on the Leica M3 and M6. I am in process of adding film to my current digital workflow. Just in the past week bought a '57 M3 double-stroke w/summicron 50/2 dual range & goggles & Leicameter MC. While the meter works, I suspect I'll use a digital camera or an android app for needed metering. I also just added a Hasselblad 503CX & 80/2.8 CF w/PME-5 for metering & a few film backs - for 120 images. And as my local camera shop owner is pushing my buttons re large format (he has a pair of Deardorff's), I've definitely learned that film is a slippery slope. I'd enjoy hearing more about your experiences with the M6. I share your affection for a 35mm as one's normal lens. So I'm interested in the M6. Again, keep 'em comin!

      I've noticed that a bit with my M3 as well. If I'm a little more cautious with how I advance the film it's fine, but if I push a little too hard on the second stroke it can slip a bit. I haven't done a CLA yet, but was actually hoping that might resolve that. Good to know in advance, I'll hold off on the CLA for now, camera works fine. Did you use Youxin?

      Hi Ted. I wrote that last comment as I was watching. Nice shots at the end too! Also, if you like the M3 but wish you had a 35mm frame line as well, then you may want to check out the M2. I like shooting my M2 when using a 35mm lens. It has 35, 50, and 90mm framelines. The 35mm frameline takes up the whole viewfinder. I have an M3 as well, which I like to use for 50mm and 90mm lenses. Like you said, the 50mm frameline takes up the whole viewfinder. I like to use my M6 Millennium if I'm shooting with a mounted flash. If I could only have one body, it would probably be the M2.

    The lack of logos and dots on the M3 makes it a stealth camera on your shoulder. With the M6 you are flashing $$ at people´s face .... Leica has Rolex status. The film rewind looks like a add on the M6. The old one may be less functional but looks much better. A battery compartment will always be a weak spot on a mechanical camera. So yeah, the M2/ M3/ M4 are the perfect Leicas.
