"Diane Warren wrote "How Do I Live" for consideration for the 1997 action blockbuster Con Air soundtrack. She ran into LeAnn Rimes at a restaurant shortly following her win as Best New Artist during the 1997 Grammy Awards. Warren told Rimes that she wrote the song specifically with Rimes in mind, promising it to her. After she recorded the song the next day, Walt Disney Pictures, the company behind the Touchstone Pictures label, decided that Rimes' recording had too much of a "pop" sound, and that Rimes, then 14 at the time of the recording, was too young to sing about the subject matter of the song. The company then turned to Trisha Yearwood for the re-recording, to which the latter agreed. According to Yearwood, she was unaware of Rimes' recording prior to being approached by Touchstone Pictures to record the song.
Yearwood's version, which utilized a more throaty, country-western vibe, appeared in the film. When Rimes' record label, Curb Records, heard of the release, they were reluctant to release Rimes' version until Warren personally called label founder Mike Curb and urged him to release Rimes' recording as a single; her version was then quickly released to mainstream pop radio on the same day as Yearwood's rendition."

According to the search I just did she was 14 when this was recorded. It was used in the movie "Con Air", but they felt she was too young to sing that for the movie version, so Trisha Yearwood was asked to record that version.

Disney said she sounded to country is the reason they got Tricia Yearwood to sing it.

It was the movies producer who said Leann sounded like she was sining to her teddy bear ( I think the movies producer let Leann's age basis himself). This was part of 3 record deal that was signed with Disney. They asked to have Leann re-record. Wilbur Rimes who was in control of Leanns career at the time refused ( she was 14). So they got Trisha to re-record the song for the movie. When Wilbur/Curb Records found out that Trisha Yearwood had recorded it for the movie, they decided to release Leann's recording to Pop radio. Leann's recording set many records on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Most weeks in the top 40 (62 weeks), Most weeks in the top 10 (32 weeks), most weeks in the top 5 (25 weeks). Most weeks in the Hot 100 (69 weeks). The Song was # 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 of all time (initially), in the revised 2021 chart she is #6. The song never reached #1, because of the untimely death of Princess Diana, and Elton Johns Tribute song to her Candle In the Wind (in which all proceeds went to Diana's Charities) It kept How Do I Live in #2 spot for 8 weeks.

You've probably heard this song, but you may not have heard LeAnn sing it... This was the theme song to the movie ConAir, but it was sung by Trisha Yearwood. Big controversy in 1997. LeAnn, then 14 was supposed to sing it, but her version sounded to "poppy" for the movie execs and they wanted her to re-record it more country, and the 14 yr old, "who knew everything of course, as they do at that age" refused. So they gave the song to Trisha, who nailed it as well. Well Miss LeAnn recorded it anyway, and they both released in 1997, like really close together. Split some Country Camps in half, people had definite choices over who they preferred. I love both of them...but I edge towards LeAnn, her twangy sound fits it a little better for me. My then husband preferred Trisha, we literally bought CD's of each of them...yes back then we had to "buy" CD's! 😅
Enjoyed your reaction. LeAnn has had a somewhat rough road, but her vocals have always blown me away since I first heard her singing Blue at 12 yrs. old. She's a great talent.

The only issue I have is "chew", Sometimes singers sound like they are saying chew instead of you. Once you hear it you can't unhear it! The trick to keep this from happening is to sing "oooo" . It will sound like "you". Yearwood's recording doesn't have this problem. "Chew" can totally ruin a song for me. lol

When this and Trisha Yearwood‘s version were both released at the same time, a radio station here in Lubbock used to play a duet which was an engineered version of both of their songs smooshed together. it was fantastic! I’m not sure who put it together, but I tried to locate a copy unsuccessfully for years.

LeAnn does well on this song, but she’s still a young girl trying to interpret a mature song. Trisha Yearwood released a more nuanced version of this song at about the same time. I forget which version was used in the Kevin Costner movie, ConAir.
Trisha Yearwood: now THAT’S a rabbit hole worth pursuing. Thinkin’ About You, On a Bus to St Cloud, The Song Remembers When, She’s in Love with the Boy, There Goes My Baby, Everybody Knows, and more.
She was married to Robert Reynolds of The Mavericks (seen in her Thinkin’ About You video). They divorced, and she later married Garth Brooks.

Nothing against LeAnn Rimes - great voice. But comparing the two versions, LeAnn was still a young girl. She kind of bashes/belts her way through it. Listen to Trisha’s version, and you can hear the nuance, the dynamics, being delivered by a woman who has actually experienced love.
