- For this tech talk, we cover details about engine oils, how they work, differences between conventional and synthetic, and why proper viscosity is so important.
the best oil talk i have heard .Thank you.
Thank you
Awesome channel! The JASO ratings that you generally see on motorcycle and powersports engine oils are MA and MA-2. The MA indicates that it is suitable for wet clutches, the MA-2 is the same, but better for catalytic converters. I have also found that they are better for the one way sprag clutches found in the starter drives on many bikes. I have replaced lots of wet clutches that slipped without being significantly worn due to automotive oil use. Also, the high service intervals are designed to lessen the mfg's exposure to environmental impact taxes, which are based on the projected amount of fluids that will need to be recycled or disposed of during the vehicle's lifetime. The high fluid change intervals are also used in marketing and sales, but are not necessarily in the end user's best interest's.
Great follow up comments Corban. Thank you!
I just found this channel and this is exactly the kind of content I like. Facts mixed in with professional opinion. Subbed!
Awesome, thank you! Welcome aboard!
I agree 100%
Kevin, my friend, your tutorials come accross as Knowledgeable and accurate therefore i shall at this time, subscribe in order to broaden my collective knowledge simply put... Your awesome brother
What about Mobil1 15w-50 ?
Higher ZDDP content, API-CF rated, and easy to find.
i prefer to stick with a 20w50.
Late comment on this video, but as a chemist I couldn't help but double take when you used the word molality, then correctly said that it was the mass of contaminant in the oil! Good job man!
Thank you sir! I'd never claim to have your expertise...but I do try my best to learn as much as possible from people more knowledgeable than I...then disseminate that information accurately. Not everyone that watches the channel is an expert in the field...and often my biggest challenge is presenting very complicated topics in a way most can understand. Thank you for recognizing it and your kind words.
the best explanation of motor oil, and it's makeup I ever heard. thanks!
thank you martin
Back in my old Shovelhead days, I have a friend of mine that rebuilt his own engine. He was one of Toyota's best techs in the country winning a national competition. He ran Pennsoil aircraft oil in the Shovel. Straight 70 weight. Never had an issue but we do live in SC where it is HOT.
Hi Kevin-great content! Since inception I have always used HD Syn3 20W-50 in all 3 holes. However, I have recently switched to HD Syn 80W-140 for the Primary and Transmission (2008 FLSTC Anniv. Edition has done 60K km's, still running original compensator). I am of the opinion that this oil switch should provide tangible benefits. Appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately, Amsoil is not available in my country South Africa.
The most important thing is to change out the fluids and filter at regular intervals or sooner. Depending on severity of use. That's what will save your engine.
Ehhh I believe I need to change my oil and filter 😂😂😂 thank you fantastic explanation ! ! I got it . Going to amzoil
Glad it helped!
Great info. I'm just a rider and not big on turning wrenches but I like to know how things work. Indian has since approved their 15W-60 full synthetic for all of their engines, air and water-cooled, which I found odd based on what you're saying about the heavier multi-weights and tight clearances.
Kevin has an almost Talmudic knowledge of his profession. Great to find someone who speaks the language with a teacher's passion and expertise and yet can articulate it so the rest of us can understand it. Another words, this guy knows his shit.
Thank you very much for the kind words and the comment. I appreciate you watching.
Kevin is way smart and humble too...
Smart to know all the facts. Down to earth to understand and explain.
This dude squirtin knowledge bombs all over my screen and speakers.....Thanks man.
haha. Thank you sir!!!
I liked your video on oil. I have had the HD maintenance done per manual on my 2009 HD Fatboy. I recently switched from HD Sys 3 to Red Line 90226 Big Twin 20w50 Power Pack Oil Package with K&N High Performance Oil Filter. I noticed it was easier to shift, and much quieter in transmission and engine. You prefer Amsoil but how does it compare to Red Line? Also, I believe you stated carbon on the top of the pistons and rings is good?? There are shops out there saying the opposite and selling products to avoid build up by using cleaning detergent in gas to EBS. I must have heard you wrong on carbon buildup being good. I have looked at the Jagg oil cooler but how does it compare to the UltraCool oil coolers and do you need the air fan on them?
Interesting re: Syn3 oil... One would assume (yeah, I know) that HD would not want an oil that does not actually work best with their own engines.. I've always been a bit skeptical of Amsoil.. So far, over 43K on the odometer of my '14 Ultra Classic w/o a single engine issue.. However, maybe I better reconsider my oil selection.. You have provided an excellent video explaining all this.. Kudos..
That’s right my twin cam holds better oil pressure at 90 degrees then it does at 60 with redline 20-50
And it’s much better than Amsoil in hotter climates.
Bel-ray vtwin conventional
Every 2500 miles works for me
Smart man I luv that 2
Yup same in my evos
Filters????? Better off running a 20 micron filter that doesn't plug up and bypass or using the 5 micron filter and changing it half way through a 5000 mile oil change interval? I've sent in oil samples up to 7000 miles and Blackstone has said oil was still good, (even when I ran sic3) only go 5000 normally but don't sweat if I go over a little. I've heard mixed reviews on whether 5 microns filters were really doing their job, or just "rated" down to 5 microns. I use a major brand filter that rhymes with Kwix, LOL
I’m glad I found this video again !! My neighbor has a 454 rebuilt Chevy he was running 2050 now he’s running synthetic 10w30 it’s got about 1000 miles on it he said it sounds and runs 10 times better then the thick Standard oil !! He said the lifters we’re making noise and he couldn’t believe me the thinner oil did wonders thank you !!
Yes sir...exactly! Proper viscosity can flow better. Good job advising your friend there...glad i could help.
Good video. Always ran conventional H-D 20-50, with the H-D filter in a 2000 Road King, that I bought new. I did upgrade the oil pump. Sold it to friend, he is still riding it, never had the heads off. I'm guessing 50k plus miles, but I never went maximum mileage between services. Thanks again, I learned a lot.
love the content, and I'm getting to the party late. Do you recommend amsoil 20w50 in all 3 holes (2012 wide glide 103) I have been reading alot and looking, but not sure if its different 20w50 for each hole or its all just amsoil. also HiFlo oil filter ?first timer to harley, I used the hiflo and kawai oil in my last bike. tia
Love the gadsden flag. I went all the way to libertarian anarchism because Rothbard told me to
If you do your oil change with a independent dealer, does your warranty become void. Can I take it to a independent approved mechanic?
Great job showing and telling about the oil and all the other stuff. Have a good one see ya next time see ya bye.
Aviation oil like aviation gas is top tier high zinc oil. A wise man recognizes that...
2017 Harley-Davidson with the M8 107 Just had the 30 Thousand Service done at the dealer. Up to now they been using H-D Syn3 oil. I told them I wanted to go with Amsoil in all three cases. I was pleasantly impressed when I drove out of Dealership. When I pulled in the clutch it felt like butter, I thought I had a brand new motorcycle. Not sure if it was my imagination but the top end sounded quieter also
You know your bike better than anyone because you ride it. I doubt it was your imagination. Glad it worked out well for you. Thanks for sharing.
@@KevinBaxter when I switched TO Lucas from another brand oil consumption increased considerably, prolly coincidental but I'll give Amsoil a try.
Mate, what a very informative channel. Stumbled across it by accident and as an owner of 7 motorcycles including 3 Harleys, I had to subscribe. I don't know why we can't get Amsoil here in Australia. If we could I'd snap it up for sure. I run Mobil 1 V Twin, after watching your VLOG I'll never use HD oil again. Why they hide there specs is very concerning. Ride Safe out there.
Thank you sir. Appreciate it. Loved my visits to OZ.
In other words, harley is building engines of lesser quality while raising their prices.
Think you missed the point by a country mile...
You build one at scale with global government regulations, EPA, labor, materials, yadi yadi yadi.
Rotella is not thick enough for air cooled, diesel engines are liquid cooled. rotella is good but not 4 vtwins imo...
I just want to say this, Synthetic oil is a FALSE term it is an Engineered oil, its base substrate is still made from Fossil oils pumped from the earth, not from some magic soy plant or mojo! "Synthetic oil is made from a base oil, powder additives, and a carrier oil that enforces an even distribution of the additives. Both synthetic oil and traditional motor oil are made from refining oil. Most synthetics begin with highly refined crude oil, pumped from deep underground." in simple terms, it is oil made with specific Good Chit and none of the Bad Chit!
34:05 that’s a big part of it…
Why would Harley-Davidson recommend non-synthetic for its $30,000 Touring bikes, but synthetic for their $45,000 CVO’S? I’ve had my 5-star dealer doing my $500 oil changes (with transmission and primary) at 5k intervals, and why haven’t they recommend I spend an extra $20 for f’ing synthetic if it’s better for my motorcycle?!
Kevin love your channel, I have been using Amsoil in my Wife’s 2015 Switch Back and my 2016 Street Glide Special, which we bought new, I do all my own maintenance just so I can see all 3-holes magnets to see for myself how our bikes are performing, my wife’s bike have 33,000 miles and mine has 28,000 miles and magnets are always clean, I’ve been using Amsoil in all my Vehicles for 25 years with no problems.
Amsoil in all three holes or just the motor
I change all 3 every 2500 miles
Unless you're racing, you are wasting oil.
Complete waste of oil and money
I change oil in my 72 FLH and my 98 FLSTF every 3000 miles oil is cheaper than a motor. I sold both my twin cams these two old bikes is it for me. I use Harley oil only. I had synthetic in the twin cams but I use mineral oil in the old bikes. 20-50 ?in the 98 and straight 50 weight in the 72. I live in south Alabama so it is warm year round. I am still suspicious of synthetic oil specifically in old bikes. We use to make oil coolers out of old chevy canister filters for the panheads back in the late 60,s and early 70's in put more oil in the system.
dead on. same here for sure.
Victory sure wasn't a victory. Only here for a few short years. They had a damn good product but unfortunately NON of them fit me. All foot controls were way too far forward for me. Loved the Green Hammers, so cool. What a shame they quit so soon. Never did like the Indian. Dinosaur juice or fake stuff. Your manual should tell you what to use.
I myself have done the same research on automotive engines and transmissions, amzoil is definitely the best, second best is mobil1.
I myself run 15w40 diesel oil in my personal vehicles but all my vehicl s have 250k+ and even my ford 460 liked 15w40 since it was new. Any other oil would cause lifters to collapse at highway speeds. So it shows every application has it's idiocracies
Thank you for finally settling this oil debate for me. Looks like it's Amsoil synthetic for my 17 Milwaukee 8
Youre welcome. There are many good oils out there. I don't claim any specific one is "the best". All I can do is compare specs, certs, and look at what I've seen over 30 years and a couple thousand engines. Once specific brand stands out to me and that's why I use it. Not blind brand loyalty, just observations. Hope that makes sense. LOL
@@KevinBaxter yes sir it does. I didn't realize Harley was hiding their information on the back of their oil containers. I don't like that either. Some conspiracy theorists would say maybe Harley doesn't want your engine to last as long so you'll trade it in on a new bike, right? 😂
They also dont tell you things like weight of fork oil...ssshhhh.....it's top secret. LOL
Love it ... I’ve a dirty Harley engine, never understood why people skimp on oils, I always use good quality and change more regularly!!! Another fantastic video 👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks for the reply, hopefully it's a good Filter like Amsoil claims !!
In case anyone is wondering about Syn3... from the Easyrider site...
easyrider.easyrider.com/syn3.htm
It's NOT a true synthetic.
One should never drink liquor out of a styrofoam cup. The high alcohol content dissolves the styrofoam. Fact. Yes I know I'm (very) late to this party.
Just watched your video on oil. It was a few years old but very informative. Do you use Amsoil in the primary and crank with a separate Amsoil in the transmission also I’m not sure what filter you like best.
You lost me when you said oil thickens when heated. No oil does that. Unless it is cooked and no longer usable. Multi viscosity oil just doesnt thicken as much as straight viscosity oil at low temperature. Thereby will have the effect of say a 10 wt at a low temp and a 40 wt at a high temp. Keep in mind a 10 wt oil at 0 degree f, will be thicker tha a 40 wt at 240 degree f.
Baker recommends royal purple for the transmissions so what do you think ?also I have a Riviera clutch and they say to run royal purple Also I change every 3000 , try to go 5000 couldn’t do it change it @ 4000.I go longer on the trans. because everytime I’ve changed it 3000 it was so clean couldn’t see why change it.And I will probably change the primary every 3000 because
seems like it gets pretty dirty in there. Do you think of K & P oil filters from Cyclesolutions?
I run Amsoil 80w90 in Baker trans or high mileage stock units. As for primary....Rivera recommended type f atf for many many years. Why they switched to royal purple, I have no idea. I switched over to American Prime clutches when Rivera couldnt meet my supply needs. I continue to run type f atf.
Believe it or not.. I have just recently found your channel. A hagged out ole biker I am.. gearhead.. not really.. just the basics..... But so far every vid I have seen of yours ….Bravo.. you make it easy to understand.. and your unbiased views that come based on experience other than motivated by $$ from some sponsor.... again.. much appreciated. Your vids make for this COVID lockdown. So here I sit.. binge watching your vids and learning...and loving it. Thanks you very much.
Thank you so much sir for the kind words. I'm glad you find it informative. Thanks for the subscription and for following along for the ride. all the best.
I wish that my high school automotive teacher would have been able to explain things as well as you do. Never realized that there was as much to know regarding engine oil and how engines are built to use a specific grade.
Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 does not appear to meet JASO standards. Is that a deal breaker for you? I have used it many years in my M8 and twin cam bikes and it's been a good oil. You can get it at auto parts stores off the shelf.
As you know from my videos, i like to deal in facts...so lets dive in. Let's start with exactly what a couple of the JASO standards are that apply specifically to these bikes then compare the brand you mentioned to my chosen brand. JASO introduced the MA and MB specification to distinguish between friction modified and non friction modified engine oils. Most four-stroke motorcycles with wet clutches need a JASO MA oil. JASO MA is a Japanese standard for special oil which can be used in 4-stroke motorcycle engine with one oil system for engine, gearbox and wet clutch system. Fluid is non-friction modified. MB grade oils are classified as the lowest friction oils among motorcycle four-cycle oils. Not to be used where a JASO MA grade oil is required. So I cant find anywhere saying that Mobil 1 V Twin is JASO MA OR MB rated. Amsoil is JASO MA/MA-2 - API SG/SL/CF/CG-4 - ISO-L-EMA2. I also can not find ANYWHERE if Syn3 is JASO or if the motorcycle specs JASO MA oil. What I can determine, is that a JASO MA oil is designed for inside gearboxes and wet clutches. So if Mobil 1 doesnt meet that, it shouldn't be used in a wet clutch or transmission. Of course, I dont see on their website where they say it's safe to use in those applications. So i guess as long as it's used only as an engine oil, all is well but i wouldn't recommend it be used in trans and or wet clutch applications. That being said, no, it's not a deal breaker for me provided it's only used in the engine. Just my .02
@@KevinBaxter I understand and that's not a problem for me because I use Bel-Ray primary lube and Bel-Ray transmission lube. I put in a new clutch and did not want synthetic in my primary. Thank you for your reply Kevin.
Back in the early 60's there was "Royal Triton" oil. It was purple. It did real good in my1956 Studebaker Hawk right up until I lost all my compression thru the rings. I did run best and fastest in class at the summer drags in Phoenix (Real hot here). Ran real good. Just didn't run very long.
Kevin thanks for some really great work .I read recently a comment from a life long H-D owner he said “ you have to maintain a motorcycle like you would an airplane.” I love my AMSOIL all three holes every 5 k
Try Redline Primary Fluid. Much smoother shifting on my Evo
what is your opinion on stainless steel reusable oil filter, aluminum-bodied, and ribbed to help in cooling? I use one on my 02 road king good results, I've used hiflotro oil filters with great results on my other bikes, a great filter. tks Kevin keep em comming
Great information Kevin!
I just bought a 2021 Heritage Classic with the M8 107ci engine. I love the bike, but I’m not a fan of the SYN-3 for the reasons you mentioned.
In your comments, you said you preferred AMSOIL Full Synthetic. Am I to assume you also recommend using AMSOIL in the transmission and primary also? I would really appreciate your thoughts. I know this is an older video, but your information and knowledge is priceless.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Do you use Amsoil on rebuild to break in?
I appreciate you 👍. I ride a 2009 HD Ultra Classic and always use 20w-50 Amsoil.
Would be nice to have some indicator when filter bypass is open
At time stamp 26:20 talking about Rotella oil you say the detergents clean so well that it removes carbon from the squish area above the rings in the combustion chamber and can lower compression possibly cause preignition. Is that just a characteristic of the tolerances of a Harley air cooled engine?
Over the years, i have observed, and have heard the same from many i trust, that in a gasoline engine, at times, they have seen that occur. I cant honestly say in every engine, but based on those experiences and observations, and the pattern thereof, im reluctant to run Rotella in any gasoline engine. Some opinions will vary....and thats why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. LOL
Dang can’t believe I didn’t find you sooner awesome content the best I’ve seen keep it coming. Thx
Amsoil . Many years ago I became a firm believer in amsoil when a few of us were on a ride from Fairbanks to Anchorage Ak. And about half way through the run we were all stopped at a gas station when we noticed one of the riders had lost his oil filter . Had no idea when or how long we been riding with no oil in his bike . But he had been using amsoil for long time . This event happened in 2005 ish and he has never experienced any kind of mechanical failure due to that one time of losing the filter . After I witnessed that I’ve never strayed from amsoil in bike or trucks .
Had a 48 pan . Rode for about two years before the first tear down after I bought it. Found a broken oil pump key. Lord only knows how that thing didn’t freeze up!!!
i have to Correct you, the Engine oil is and always has been 5000 miles on a Harley, what is 15,000 and 20,000 is the change of the Transmission and Primary and i started working for Harley in 1973 and since the Evo Era that was the Factory recommendation, but the DEALERS liked and still do the 5000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 mile services with the 10k and 20k being more major services
Thanks for the oil video Kevin. I recently had an email exchange with a tech from Feuling and he said they only recommend K&N or Harley oil filters. He did not say anything about the 5 micron filter though.
Great video. I have a question about Rotella having too much detergent. Is .030 thick carbon buildup in the combustion chamber really a design feature hat helps compression and prevents detonation? Or did I misunderstand? I’ve watched a few of your videos and am learning a lot about the V twin world. Keep up the good work. Also, you talked about zinc being a good additive. I had a few bikes with a wet clutch and thought the zinc made the clutch plates too slippery. Not a problem with V twins?
.030 thick carbon is a bad thing. A little around the rings isn't though....a little being key word. As for wet clutch, thats where JASO MA ratings come in...that means they are designed for wet clutch applications with either synth or non.
@@KevinBaxter hi! Off the oil topic for a second but related to the carbon post. I sometimes use Race Gas and it leaves a orange colored residue on the plugs. I think they said it’s manganese…. dangerous or not to the parts inside the combustion chamber & rings? Thanks for the GREAT videos!
I learned first hand the difference between conventional oil versus synthetic oil. 20 years ago me and my friend were sitting in 100 devree weather waiting to get on a ferry in galveston. We had identical harleys. Same year same engine same bikes. The only difference is he had facrory harley conventional oil. I had mobil 1 synthetic oil. Both 20w50 oil. After awhile his bike started to run like crap and die. My bike was still idleing great. Basically his got much hotter idleing than mine did. I have run nothing but synthetic oil since then.
I bought a 2006 fatboy in July . The first owner gave me a case of Sin 3 oil he said that's what he has always ran since new. Bike has 19000 on it seems to run perfectly. You said you're not a fan of this oil. What should I run ?shame not to use this oil since I already have it.
Good video on oils. About halfway in I found myself thinking about 60 weight SAE oil and kickstart only motorcycles. Would really give some good cardio trying to get the bike started on a 50 degree morning.
What are your thoughts on schaffers oil?
Kevin, would you recommend the K&P S4or the Protwin for an 95 Evo?I noticed that there is a 15 micron difference . How much of a flow difference is that???
This man is the real deal. His kind is what made America stand out from all others. Honest, intelligent and productive. I don't look up to too many men, but I can tell he is a good man. We all benefit from his knowledge. I know he enjoys his work. Love the flags behind him.
I have been told from Harley Using synthetic Will it make the engine louder
People always say that Harley's are tractor engines. That is a gawd damned lie. Tractors have much better built power plants.
First of all…. I think your the only one who’s ever said that. Second, Harleys are waaay better
Not the engines, the bikes themselves. I love them and my tractors.
I remember my dealer not recommending a Harley oil cooler on my 2008, because they got clogged and caused problems. I hope the M8's don't have that issue but not sure.
I've also used Amsoil on all my vehicles for a very long time and have never had an engine issue. Ford, Chevy, Harley as well as compressor, lawn mowers, snow blower, you name it.
good choice sir!
I use 4 qt of 20-50 v twin syn Lucas oil and almost 1 qt of syn 20-50 hi zinc
Racing oil that puts me little bit over 1500 zinc content
Great video, question about the S&S oil pump and S&S cam plate . The oil pump has an idle pressure much higher than stock.
Should someone be concerned about the piston Oilers at idle? My concern is over oiling at idle. The Oilers will be oiling at idle as the check valve remain closed at 9-12 psi. At 12-15 psi it opens and if a hot idle is above that they keeps oiling. Is that an issue that the Oilers will always be working?
I always use Schaefer oil in Harley's, all 3 holes. Have you looked into this brand at all?
I’m still waiting to find out what oil to finally use?
He said Aimsoil.
Kevin, I really enjoyed the video, a wealth of knowledge. And go easy on drinking SAE50...stick with multigrade..
Thanks Adrian. Tried multigrade then settled in on a straight 30 non detergent. Haha.
I was told by a retired Harley mechanic not to run centhetic in my older Harley during a transmission rebuild but I always run Lucas oil an Lucas stable izer am I wrong I only have 89 an older Harleys 3 of them
I bought my fxdls and ran synthetic oil and it did nothing but make noise,a Harley mech.recomended I use a conventional oil.I work with big machines that all use Chevron 15w40Cj oil,I have been using it for 40k and it runs like a top,no noises.i figure that oil protects engines worth 100 times more than my bike.
On the sub.of filters, what is your thought on reusable oil filters ?
In the event I use one, or customer requests one, I use these protwin.com/hyperflowoilfilter.aspx It's a matter of preference really.
Hey Kevin at 45 minutes in you state that there are 2 house brand oil filters that you like. Hifiltro being the first. What is the second? Thanks for putting out these videos! Your insite gives me and the guys things to talk about when we are sitting around wrenching on bikes and drinking tall boys!
2012 Street glide, I run wix filter and amazon basics SN plus 20/50 oil. Bike runs great and it’s cheap. Super quiet, was using redline but budget doesn’t allow it right now. But I can say I see no difference in temp, power or pressure.
I have watched this video at least a dozen times and still laugh my @$$ off every time you mention Rotella.
Citgo makes harley syn 3. Why I use amsoil. I agree its the best oil for any engine. Love your vids an ur a very intelligent man when it comes to bikes. I trust your word an would listen to your advice anytime
I run Amsoil after the first 500 miles from new (2021 Road Glide Limited).
Great...you have a fine spirit...after 48 yrs of pans n shovels..finally bought a evo...my ol broke body like the comfort the flhtcu has..lol..thanks for the info on oil..peAce💜🤴
So i guess you should use synthetic oils
i heard syn 3 is citgo oil ---
Great info kevin..say, I have a 2019 m8114..when I start it after sitting, like..in the am, it has a knock, not ping, a knock..after a minute or 2, it goes away, I assume after it gets lubricated..then knock gone..any ideas if I should be concerned? 25k miles and Mobil 1vtwin syn 20-50..thanks
From what you describe it sounds like a couple of things. You either have a mild case of piston slap or a lifter bleeding down
Kevin Baxter so does that mean that to cure the problem is a tear down or go to a 20/40 oil
Hey Kevin, are you running the Amsoil 20W50 in all 3 holes? I may have missed you saying so. If not, what in the trans and primary?
Depends. Stock bike, yes. If upgrade to trans or Performance engine, I'll run 80w90 amsoil severe gear in trans. Some clutches require type f atf. If the trans has some age or a little noisy, also run 80w90.
I'm impressed with harley Davidson.
Here in Australia we have “Penrite”
They do a 10Tenths Racing20 Full Syn oil.
Racing 20 is a 100% PAO & Ester synthetic SAE 20W-60, SHEAR FREE modern, engine oil. It contains an Anti Wear package of *FULL Zinc + (exceeding 2200+ PPM levels) for ultimate engine wear protection.
Did I hear you say something about “Shear”. Is it, or is it not required for stopping high spot dry running of parts and bearings ect.
I run this in all three holes. But have been told a full Syn in primary isn’t good for proper clutch engagement and that an ATF would be better. Is this true also.
Cheers enjoy your videos 🍻
Adam Layton at APL in Sydney is a good friend. He has a lot to say about Gulf oils. I've heard of Penrite, but never used it. Sounds like a great product.
Kevin Baxter APL produce some amazing builds 👍
If you ever get by there, tell Adam or Julie I said hello. Berto, John, and Rollie at Rollies...know them well. Or Morgan and Wacker HD. Say hi to Malcolm Martin for me. All these are good fellas and great friends.
Interesting to hear that there us "good" carbon in deposits as you mentioned. Do you mind elaborating ?
My understanding from an older 2017 MSDS sheet for Harley Syn 3, which is hard to come by, is that Syn 3 made by CITGO (a U.S. oil company owned by the Venezuelan government) is only 60% Group III and Group IV (synthetic). It is advertised as full synthetic.
It is amazing how many motorcycles run idle at so low rpm and oil pressure
I cringe at the low idle some folks have their V'Twins at to get the potato sound. I try to inform them to put the idle at factory RPM level to save those crank pins and bearings.
Rebuild on my TC ,,,, 110.. I live in hot ass northern cali. 110 a lot of the time is the temp.. usually about 100 in the summer months. I run since the rebuild... amsoil 60w. syn.
I also run a amsoil oil filter 20 micron i believe.
I have less then 1000 miles on the rebuild.
I also have a digital oil pressure gauge on the bike and have for 10 years.
love the consistency of oil pressure readings since the switch of oils.
top end is so quiet,,, ( stock motor ) that I am smiling every day I run/ride.
2010 softail CVO
Thanks for the info! Sounds like you have it dialed in pretty good!
@@KevinBaxter thank you Kevin,, I just discovered your channel a short time ago,, so I am slowly going through your vids... You do a excellent job,, at explaining your topics.. I am 64,, and I love still learning the mechanics of it all.. keep up your good work
Thank you sir. Welcome. I appreciate the kind words.
I run Amsoil 20/50 in my 2010 HD Heritage from the first oil change. I ran Castrol 20/50 in my old Shovelheads and never had any issues.
Mineral or synthetic oil?
Hi Kevin do you have the exact name on Amsoil oil for my FLTRXS 2015 i cant find it here in Denmark
Thank you for your comment Kevin. I will check my tensioners to give me peace of mind. I appreciate your expertise! Stay safe, and god bless you! A very informative site, thank you heaps!
Youre welcome. Good plan. Thank you sir...good luck!
What do think of running a Teflon type (PTFE) additive, Slick -50, etc, in a Harley Davidson engine?
I wouldn't do it. Just rebuild two engines that were running such products. Nastiest engines inside i have ever seen. Like syrup caked everywhere.
How about Valvoline VR1 50? It has high zinc and phosphorus.
I just recently got a 2003 heritage softail and was wondering what type of oil I need to run... I'm new to the harley world any help would be appreciated
Scrivo dall'Italia. Uso Spectro Platinum 20w50 per TwinCam96 Dyna.... Proverò Amsoil, ma è difficile da reperire....
Kevin, I ride a '15 Heritage Classic all year long, where I live it gets below freezing some parts of the winter, but I still ride. I'd like your opinion on using 10w-50 or 15w-50 motorcycle oil (even though they do not say they're made for V-twins/Harley engines) in the crankcase during my winter rides?
