2016 Triumph Tiger XCX vs. BMW F800GS | Comparison Test Ride Review

- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- We put the 2016 Triumph Tiger XCX against the classic BMW F800GS to see which is the best middleweight adventure bike.
Both the Tiger XCX and the F800GS have the same specs: a 21 inches front wheel, similar wind protections, similar chassis and electronics. But there is one big difference: the engine. While the #BMW uses the 800 cc parallel twin, the Triumph has a 800 cc inline-three cylinder power plant.
To see what these bikes are capable of, we tested them both on curvy roads and off-road. The Tiger XCX was fitted with Continental TCK 80 tires, while the F800GS’ tires were Michelin Anakee II.
So, which is the best middleweight adventure motorcycle? The new Triumph Tiger XCX or the BMW F800GS. Join us to find out!

Hey guys,
Very nice video.
A few comments about the Tiger 800 XCx:
1. Stock tires are just poorly chosen by Triumph. They are 95/5 at best. Changing the tires to proper Enduro tires such as Mitas E07/E10 does wonders to off road capabilities.
2. Triumph geared the XCx incorrectly - the 1st gear is too high. Changing the front counter sprocket from 16 teeth to 15 makes a big difference with low rpm, and is easy and cheap
3. Reset of the off-road mode - yes, a pain in the ass for sure. But instead of shutting down the engine with the key just turn the engine off with engine shut off switch. Lights stay on but for a 5-10 minute break that is no problem and the mode remains.
4. Changing the bulbs to LED makes the light brighter and reduces any issues that could happen due to item 3 above. Super easy to change bulbs and not that expensive.
5. Triumph's OEM foot pegs are just not really meant for off road - too small not enough grip. The solution is easy with after market foot pegs.
6. Installing the BoosterPlug enriches the fuel mixture by 6% and allows smoother power at low RPM (which is where the bike needs it most in technical off road sections)
There are many other things that can be done but these make a big difference for a low investment in time and money
Yuval Naveh Cheers for the info mate
How can I find this BoosterPlug you mentioned? Couldn't find it on Amazon
Booster plug have their own website you can buy direct from them around 120$or you can choose out of 4 currencies.
I had a 2012 BMW F800 GS Triple black...too much vibration above 5,000 rpm. Now have a 2016 Tiger XCx. I agree that the BMW was a better off road bike due to lower center of gravity and bottom end torque. The Tiger is still good off road but much better on road. I love the WP suspension on the Tiger. And the engine in the Tiger...OMG! so smooth. No vibration. I had Heidnaues on the BMW and now also on my Tiger. Awesome bike!
New channel? Really liking the camera angles and the actual information that your putting into your reviews. Its not all about the spec sheet. And you guys really hit that :) Good job

Rest in peace bro. I came up your video still running like nothing happaned to you.
I've wanted a BMW for a very long time, but after reading, watching RUclips reviews and speaking with friends, I decided that the Triumph Tiger would be a better all around motorcycle for me. I ended up buying a Tiger Triumph XCx. I'm looking forward to the warm weather to do some touring. At first I'll stick to the paved road and some gravel, but as I get more comfortable and experienced I'll try some more challenging off road trails. Thanks a bunch for the review!
Greeting from Houston! I was fully engaged in this short, beautiful, and perfectly descriptive summary. Romania, so lovely with the countryside and geographic contrasts. Good English, passionate, fair and balanced. Bravo!
Wow, guys this video is amazing! Everything from editing to information is a world class! Subscribed!
hello guys, I am a long time subscriber, but I just found this awesome video. Two thumbs up .
Personnally I tried both a few years ago and decided without hesitation for the f 800 gs better power in low rpm.
Excellent video! You do very well with your English language videos. Keep them coming! I thought your review was an honest and thorough.

Nicely shot video, and I like that you highlighted the essential specs while sharing your subjective impressions of both bikes. Well done!

thanks for this video guys. I was looking at my next bike this morning and decided on these 2. your video was perfect with all the info I was looking for! cheers
I couldn’t live with the sound of the Tiger’s valve train, it whirs like a Bernina sewing machine
Balanced and clear suggestions about both bikes. Usefull video, thanks
You welcome. Hope you'll enjoy our other videos too.
Great review lads! Good footage, easy to understand and clear summary at the end.
Amazing amount of content in under 7 mins. Both bikes are great. Did you guys like the Africa Twin?
Amazing landscape!! Great job!
This is such a well made review (and such a beatyfull landscape)!
Thank you.
We're glad you like it. Thank you for your appreciation.
Amazing, No nonsense review, simplified it so well... cheers
Thank you. Stay tuned.
i buy a tiger 800xca and love this bike, the engine is the best i ever had....sooo smoth this bike, but for offroad i think the africa twin is much more better then the BMW F800GS
Nice video I rode them both when searching to replace my R1150GSA. Ended up with the Africa Twin based on the deal I got. I will keep it until Yamaha gets of its ass and gives us a 750 Tenere.
Good job guys, enjoyed it!
Nice frames, throughout the review. Good job guys, are those stock tires on the triumph xcx?
fantastic video shots
Love your videos! Thanks
Excellent review, no nonsense.
Very cool vid - thanks
Great comparison and beautiful pictures. Thanks a lot guys and keep the good work up! Where did you film? Looks beautiful
Thanks for watching us. :) That fabulous scenery is in Romania. Somewhere between Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Mountains, in the middle of the Carpathians. Did you watch our Tiger XCX solo review? We have some beautiful footage over there too.
Yes I did! Definitly have to put Romania on the list for the next trip. Thanks for letting me know!
yes, triumph even offers a few lower seat option across the range for shorter riders like me(1.73m is not that short already). and most of them comes with skip plate, hand cover, power charger, bigger screen compared with BMW entry level GS
Very good comments and beautiful places !!
Thanks, mate.
great video and comparison, beautifully filmed thank you. What country are you in? Its beautiful
Romania
Nice work fellas! 👍🏻
Ver nice video, thanks for that! Definitly a help to choose between these bikes.

Very well done gentlemen.
I am currently busy deciding between these exact 2 bikes.....will be used mainly for tarmac and the odd off road excursion ....so I would assume the Tiger is the better option?
Nice reveiw by the way...will subscribe
Thanks for doing this video, especially in English!
Nice review! Subbed.

Thanks, Andrew. Maybe we'll have the chance to make a video review on those beautiful roads someday.
Thanks for the Nice review guys. In what country is it recorded? Nice environment.
Romania
Does an F800 Vibe more than a bike with a V twin?
Well made video, great photography and editing but could do with a
Bit more information about the bikes specs, performance etc.
bikes specs at your fingertips on the www
Compare the Tiger to a F800gs(2010) - Shipped with battle wings, non adjustable front suspension, seat could only be ridden for 45 minutes, windshield caused deafness at highway speeds and as fuel level goes down, the bike becomes top heavy and even scary.
The Triumph is far and ahead of the F800
Jon Moran plus the BMW electronics, which suck!
Always love triples the sound and power.
That montage song is crunchy AF. Just stock music?
nice video, Baced on your review, I think I Know my next bike, the Africa Twin....it's almost a mixture of the best of both these bikes combined.
which action cam did you use to record?
Salut, ce model e geaca de la Dainese?
In Romania (where the video was shot), the Tiger isn't that popular. And that is a big shame, because it's an excelent advanture bike and a good, everyday to work comuter. Wish Triumph gets the popularity it desarves. And yes mid class adventure bikes are the best. Above 800cc they get havy for off-road and to big for city traffic.
Thanks for sending the thread for your new channel.
great video. new subscriber. thank you.
good review, thanks :-)
Succes, romanasii mei
Thks for review
Awesome you got a subscriber, can you tell me what are these means XR, Xrx, XCx, XCa, what does these 4 versions means? I am looking to buy one of these but cant understand these 4 types of versions am looking for both on road and off road triumph
Hi. Welcome to the club! Well, this whole XC/XR thing is confusing indeed. Basically, you have two versions: XC [off-road focused, 21 inch front, spoked wheels] and the XR [stree oriented, 19 inch front, cast wheels]. Then, the other x stands for a different level of equipment - so, the XRx and the XCx are more expensive but they have more optional equipment. Then, we have the a versions. The a stand for touring. So, the XCa is more confortable for long-travel, with heated grips and heated seat, for example.
So, if you want a more off-road oriented bike, you should choose an XC. If you want a better ride on tarmac, the XR is your bike.
Thanks a lot :)
I was earlier looking to buy street bike I bought a used one 250 cc and was looking forward to upgrade I would had bought it then I felt nah riding on streets wont give me the adventures I want .
So which model is both use for off road and on road and which tyres are best ? am completely new to this adventure bike club
Well, for better handling in off-road you need a 21 inch front and a longer travel suspensions - so it's the XCX or the F800GS [the latter is better in enduro than the Tiger but not so exciting on street]. As for the tires, the TKC 80 are the best choice for off-road, but they have a short lifetime.
Thanks a lot mate for guiding where as BMW is concerned its very very expensive than Triumph Tiger 800 series
Good review.
Excelent review as always! Excelent music too! Do you know the names of artists? Thanks from Argentina!
Great job gentlemen! Exactly the comparison that I have been looking for, and done in some beautiful country.
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
I will take bmw800gs
best review!
best comment!
Where were you guys riding?
Romania - in the Charpatians. There are some very nice mountain villages over there. You get a very good mix of tarmac and off-road
Good site. Keep it up guys. Just a comparison, my 2003 Honda xrv750 is 218kg wet weight with much more interesting specs.
I already own a Tiger 800XC and I love it. I watch Tiger-videos when I'm too busy to ride. :) I added handlebar raisers to make it just a little bit more touring oriented and it helps a lot with the ergonomics. I'm planning a trip to Romania from Slovenia this year. We all know the Transfaragasan and Transalpina, what else is the "must see" on motorcycle there? Greetings, Marko
I'm deciding between, wee strom 650 (2017) 2016 XCX or F800GS. Your XC, mostly road or 50/50? How is it on roads 65mph+. Trying to justify $2000K more for the bmw or Triumph. Thanks
John Anderson Well, usually it is the emotions that make the decision. Triumph is the most powerful one of the three, has a really good triple engine, which vibrates a great deal less than the twins, it has a good torque curve, it never stops pulling. I use it a lot for touring, also with 2 passengers, and in that aspect you can't beat it in sub 1000cc class. I upgraded with the Puig adjustable screen, and the bike performs really good, regardless of speed. That said, I use it mostly on asphalt and occasional gravel road. Today I climbed some hill with a passenger on, the road was a mess, it really is more about rider ability than the bike's ability. I've ridden all three bikes that you've mentioned, the decision for me were only BMW and Triumph, and the styling, smooth engine, touring orientatio made the decision. And I like the brands heritage. Ride safe!
Thank you for the response, ride safe too...
Did u face any starter motor issues with your tiger?
In the street who wins gs or tiger, i don't speak english very well
Tiger in all reviews
I can't help it but this review seems biased towards the Tiger.
Ok then...where were you riding!? Looks like Bavaria, but probably Spain or Italy?
It's Romania. :)
That BMW 800 engine is shocking my wife had the gt worst bike ive ever ridden she kept it for 4 weeks .
She's got the tiger now
i m 5.7 feet.
should i purchase tiger xrx
Pradeep Yadav- I'm 5 ft 10 in, just bought a XCX. I use the low seat setting, and just barely reach the ground with flat feet. I have dropped the bike twice while stopped, or turning the bike around due to uneven ground. Once the bike is moving though, all is well.
Rezervorul gs-ului nu are 24 litri ?
cel de la GSA. Al meu are 6.5 galoane, deci pe-acolo
Well done. It's an interesting comparison and beautiful countryside ! Great review and the Tiger is...... a Tiger :-)
Nice Video
Thank you
Where is all this beautiful countryside, that being said i disagree with the Top bike. As a KTM 1190 owner I've driven both my ridding buddies
Pierre Martin romania
"We picked two class-leading bikes in this segment" - no you're not. The class-leading bike in this segment is new Africa Twin, and it's MUCH better than any of these two.
BestRex 😂😂😂😂 stay off the beer!!!
ryan bessell, no idea what that's suppose to mean. I don't drink beer.
BestRex Simply don't get why so many people are comparing these to africa twin? at least in Finland africa twin costs nearly 5k euros more, it is 1000cc and goes to more expensive insurance level and naturally it is different segment of bikes since it is just bigger. I think africa twin is great but not fair to compare with these two.
Rest in peace homie...
Instead of putting background music on everything, just let us listen to the sound of the bikes please!
We'll try to do that. The problem is that the sound of the bikes comes sometimes in poor quality due to the recording techniques. But we'll focus more on that thing.
Nice job definitely needed! just work better on the reading part when speaking "naturally" to each other in front of the camera ;).
Nice vid. But on the bike specs photo, you showed the bmw fuel tank in the front...
Filmed in Transylvania, Romania.
great comparison! though i think you should do mother tongue reviews and english subs. you´d feel more comfortable that way
Thanks for the suggestion
fair review...coz you not from Germany either British..i like it..
True!
I'll take the ... Africa Twin...
I was expecting more/different from you guys. Everything you've said was said earlier in at least 20 other reviews.
And where was the off-road part? I didn't see it, only roads, gravel, tarmac but roads and in very good condition. I can drive my car there, and it isn't a 4x4.
P.S.
Off-road/enduro raiders don't use topcases and I think you know why.
Am probat bmw cât si Triumph, si m-am decis pe un Kawasaki Versys 650 2016 . Ce e rău la el ca nu are cruis control , si nici cel de 1000 ..,
Me quedo con la tiger… 🇦🇷
f800gs for sure....
