  • Labour's initial response to the prime minister's defence announcement earlier was to suggest it would review government spending if it takes power.
But Steve Reed, the party's shadow environment secretary, says Labour is aiming to match the current government's figure to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence by the end of the decade.
Speaking to the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge, Mr Reed says: "Yes, Labour would want to match that."

We will match, we will match, we will match get some ideas of your own please.
I don't think 2.5 percent is anywhere near enough.
It will take 3 percent to get our forces to the right level.

Saying since the other lads came to office is never a good thing cause it implies that the reason for it is your sides decisions starting to manifest itself.
If he had said a we now see after some time with the other sides politics how the problems have started to increase.
Also he went forth and then backwards on the 2.5% claims which is never a good sign.

To debate today's dog and pony show is a fool's errand. Nevertheless, and right on cue, Ridge approaches the interview as if No. 10 just released a white paper. The entire line of questioning was sophomoric.

This argument about the increase being equivalent of the entire schools budget is very misleading, the £75bn extra is the total extra spend over 6 years compared to the current budget, the £60bn schools budget is the amount spent just this year. If we were comparing per year figures then we are actually spending more on schools than defence this year. In terms of how it will be funded, total public spending is well over 40% of gdp, so a 0.2% increase between now and 2030 is not very significant.

Better to spend public money on productive things like schools than more tanks to sit idle and rust in military bases.
Russia doesn't have the capacity to invade Britain. Simple as. Their army is struggling invading Ukraine.
