Love the case size, love the color way, like the bracelet. Glad to see it doesn't have the plastic escapement. I would definitely like to see one in the metal.
I love Mido. I’m so happy to see it appear on RUclips more often. I’m living in Japan and unfortunately is not as popular as other big brands like Rolex, Omega, Seiko, Citizen ,etc…
Still one of the most underrated watch brands. My titanium Ocean Star runs within 1 s/d. The bracelet is also one of the most comfortable I own, even over much more expensive options.
Said this before, say it again: the watch you (and all reasonable people) want would have competed against Longines' gmt, and less than half the price. Mido's larger gmt came first to test the waters, so to speak. Then Swatch favored Longines at the expense of Mido for a smaller (and pricier) watch (spirit zulu time).
The limited edition Mido Ocean Star GMT for Hodinkee is easily my favorite watch. I am so glad to see a "regular" version of this watch finally on the market. I wonder what took so long. (I suppose the Decompression WT is an answer, but that is certainly its own thing.)
My issue with the latest trends in GMT is most of them coming out as diver gmts. i feel like im speaking for most people but correct me if im wrong, most people are traveling for family visits, business, and pleasure. Within these categories, a diver gmt doesnt work for business for obvious reasons and most people wouldnt be diving when visiting family, and would be spending most of their pleasure trips sightseeing. This is to say that most people (mostly speaking about myself), would prefer a more classical / casual looking watch or maybe even something that can be dressed up.
Nah, it's just you. A dive-style case has always been the obvious choice for GMTs for practical reasons - all you need to do is change the markings on the bezel from 60 min. to 24h. It's not a "latest trend". Ever seen a GMT Master? Even if you do change the style, a GMT will never be dressy because it always needs a bezel that will make it look sportier, plus GMT movements are on the thicker side. As for when a dive watch is "appropriate", let's start with the obvious fact that no one has been using them as a primary dive timing device in the last 30-40 years. We have dive computers and bottom timers for that. We wear dive watches because we like the style and because they're practical (useful elapsed time function, water resistance, durability). I don't know why you're saying they're not a good holiday watch when they're really prerfect for that. Just because you only do sightseeing, doesn't mean other people don't get in the ocean on holiday (like, literally THE most popular holiday activity). Visitng family? Casual enough for a sports watch. Business travel? I and most people have no issues wearing a diver or sports watch in general in a business setting - anything less than full black tie event is fair game.
@@bananowyjestemsobie that's interesting. I might have over estimated the number of people agreeing with me. Some people do (I'm assuming the 4 people that liked my original comment agree), but I'm glad to learn there are others that this watch type caters to. As for vacation destination, I really do disagree and I'm not talking about my own experience only. A quick Google search to the most popular vacation destinations, and they are almost all in Europe famous for sightseeing. Places like Britain, Italy and turkey aren't exactly known for their beaches. And even places that are known for their beaches tend to have vacationers spending most of their time sight seeing still. You also kind of contradicted yourself saying that most people don't mind wearing a dive watch in a professional setting but a GMT is too thick to be worn as a dive watch 😂. I'll argue if you think most people don't mind wearing a dive watch, even more don't think twice about thickness. As for the style of dive watches, you're 100% correct in saying I don't like it. I have a personal bias against it and I'm more than happy to admit it. I prefer gmts like the Seiko sharp edge, Longines Zulu time, a lot of the Grand Seiko gmts, and even something like the new parmigiani tonda GMT over the black Bay gmts, GMT masters and the watch shown in this video.
@@andreraffla5555 Fully agree. I'd love to see more non-diver GMTs too. More versatile for real life while also avoiding the "look at me I'm a tool" vibe of so many diver-style watches with loud bezels.
I recently found that seiko has a presage GMT for around $500ish. Definitely less diver and more formal, you should look them up the faces are gorgeous.
I love the ocean star. The best quality for the money period. I have a cosc commander II. I also have an Ocean Star. The camera takes great pics but, still doesn’t do it justice. My favorite Mido I have is the TV big date. The blue dial pairs nicely with my MC blues. Although the commander II gets me the most compliments. This brand hits way above its weight class. I’d say the feel is above my date just. 😮
Mido is on a roll. I’m not a fan of building a collection of a bunch of watches in this price range. As a whole, I’m a proponent of maintaining a small collection. That said, there’s a jeweler near me carrying Mido, they have upped their game, they offer some nice watches. This is a good edition, it’ll sell well.
Have this watch and love it! Tje bracelet is awesome. Realized that the color way looks very similar to a Breitling blue/white Super Ocean that my father has. Only thing I wish it had was a ceramic bezel. I just think ceramic looks really nice and would look better than the matte colored aluminum bezel it has. Im also not really a fan of boxed sapphire crystals. I think other than asthetics (for some), it offers no real benefit over flat sapphire. It causes distortion on the inner 24hr markings and it more prone to damage.
@1:58 I picture a board room with an up and coming product designer, remote in hand, ready to unveil his power point presentation. He exuberantly projects towards his corporate mentors, “You’ve seen Nautilus rip offs and you’ve seen Submersible rip offs… But you’ve never seen a single watch that simultaneously rips off both!” With that click of a button, his promotion is secured.
Great review, but not a fan of the watch. Especially the dial is way too small. The inner 24 hour ring is unnecessary in my opinion, which makes the dial smaller and feels unbalanced
I would remove the inner 24h ring, this is the change would make it a best-seller, a clean Ocean Star look with Aquaterra shade in a very wearable size below 41mm. And of course, more colours, like grey, white or emerald green
Teddy as a reference point, my Multifort TV Big Date runs at +1 per day. I will definitely consider the brand again, including this piece which looks really well done.
the Mido showcased in the video is nice. I have a vintage Tradition automatic with same style bracelet. Been looking and waiting to get a hold of a Trasaka Venturer GMT with on the fly no tool bracelet adjustment. Great review as always Teddy.
I was recently gifted this watch and it has rounded out my humble watch collection. The 40.5mm case looks great on my small wrist, and the mesh band is not a masculine as the mental bracelets with larger links.
Not a bad looking watch, and nice to see lots of choice in this segment between Tissot, Certina and now Mido. I wonder what the dimensions of the actual dial are on this watch, it looks very small? Lots of tough competition from microbrands too, the Wise Adamascus GMT is well worth a look for about $500 less.
Hey Teddy! Can you do a brand review/guide for Traska, Sinn, or Damasko? I'd love to see more content about them, especially Traska being that they're the King of scratch resistance.
Teddy, love the channel. One GMT I’ve not seen a tenured reviewer tackle, is the Hamilton Broadway GMT. New H-14 movement, 80hr power reserve, world time bezel, seemingly one of the most fully featured GMT for the price? In your busy release schedule, I’d love to see hear your thoughts on it.
You should check out the new Yema Superman Bronze. It has a French in-house movement with a bronze case for $1800. Seems like a great value but I'd love to see your take on it.
I had the hodinkee version for a few months last year. I kinda liked it, but the hands and dial were way too small. Ended up selling it. Looks like this one is the same in that regard.
I’m reading conflicting specs on this movement. Some say it’s the “modern escapement” version (plastic/composite) which can’t be regulated or serviced and other sites say it’s the traditional escapement. Hope it’s the ladder. Seems a lot to spend otherwise.
I've been waiting for the Traska Venturer (green dial) to come back in stock, so other than the dial color this could be the one. Are these comparable in build?
Great video. Just a small critique. The person's hand who demo' d the bracelet. Bruh. Those finger nails look like he has been chewing on them awhile kind of gross when you are modeling a watch. Maybe picky just saying. It really draws the eye from the watch to those gnarled finger nails.
Mido is always undervalued in North America and I don't understand. I got an Ocean Star 600 a few months ago and it just checks, not just mine, but everyone's boxes for those looking for a diver.
I wanted to love the watch. I like pieces with unique markers. My Seiko Monster homage by Heimdallr is my daily driver. But this watch.. I just can't get past that hideous white. I'm still set on the Ocean Star 39.
The Ocean Star "Sharktooth" is nice, but I think the Ocean Star GMT Black ( Ref: M0266291105101) is the best dial color option. Right now, my favorite GMT watch that I want to get (other than the Rolex Pepsi) is the Longines Spirit Zulu (in black with blue gmt hand). That's my "almost grail" watch right now, but that MIDO would be a good every day that would get alot of use. Thanks Teddy!
The watch is fairly small already, and the huge bezel/inner bezel/chapter ring or what is that? makes the dial look disproportionally tiny. I recently got the seiko 5 and I was surprised how small and unreadable it is to my old eyes, this is maybe 1mm larger but the dial is probably even smaller than that. Fair try neverthless.
Love Mido and love my Ocean Star Tribute. Absolutely underrated.
I like it and applaud MIDO’s design and continued efforts in bringing us good-looking, functional and affordable products.
Now that's a handsome watch. Unique style, but still very classic looking.
Love the case size, love the color way, like the bracelet. Glad to see it doesn't have the plastic escapement. I would definitely like to see one in the metal.

I think the thing we all want is their Ocean Star GMT’s with a smaller case size… the Tributes and the Shark Teeth just don’t quite scratch that itch.

Mido's larger gmt came first to test the waters, so to speak. Then Swatch favored Longines at the expense of Mido for a smaller (and pricier) watch (spirit zulu time).
I guess the Limited Edition is just a test for the demand for the new case size...
8:37 omg this one is so beautiful 😍❤️💯⌚️
Not a fan of GMTs, but I really like my Commander from MIDO. Excellent video Teddy.
I collect watches only with ETA and SW movements, since I can service them myself. And this seems to be my next watch! Amazing!
Getting older but vintages are magic...

Wish my GMTs were thinner though.
Yasssssss, been waiting for a hands on review of this one since the announcement!
I think its a great value, for those who want a travelers GMT and cannot afford to move up to Longines, Tudor or Grand Seiko
Seems to be a variation of the Mido x Hodinkee Ocean Star gmt. Even the fabric strap is the same.

Thanks Teddy for your channel and making aware of two brands Certina and Mido that seem to fly under the radar when it comes to Swiss watches.
Love from India❤❤❤

Doubt it
Ted, do you think Mido would release different colors of this watch in the future?
Great review, but not a fan of the watch. Especially the dial is way too small. The inner 24 hour ring is unnecessary in my opinion, which makes the dial smaller and feels unbalanced
As mentioned in the video, the inner ring allows you to track 3 time zones. It has a purpose.
@@SlCKB0Y-sb1kg Well, I prefer a more simple design
I felt the same way, the dial is too small.

Why are there no 37-38 mm GMTs from known brands ?
Most of the limitations will come from the caliber diameter.
Christopher Ward has both a 38mm and 39mm GMT option
@@EmmetFardyTrue, so does Maen, though with a unidirectional bezel and a caller GMT.
All measurements indicate a watch that maybe friendly to smaller wrists, but that dial to bezel ratio seems a little off.

It only lacks traditional Mido naming on the dial.

The dial just looks...off. I think it's the ring with the 24h numbers that just makes the dial look too small.
It looks so much like the Lorier Hydra! Of course the Hydra has a Miota movement but it is still a true GMT also and reliable.
