    A classic that should be in every fly box tied in natural, olive ,black and with a flashback on some of the olive colored flies in sizes 12 to 18. I have them for when I go to Maryland to see family and fish for trout. Always produces fish. Thanks, Matt.

      Yes Ed!! A pearlescent strip in both this and the pheasant tail are great additions. Giving them both just the slightest bit of flash. I keep plenty of those in my boxes too. :-)

      @@SavageFlies Hi Matt. We stopped at the Cairn’s Pool on the way up. Watched a bunch of guys catching the air and one guy catch a single trout using an x-caddis. Returned the next day to spotty bug activity, a missed a swipe or two at my caddis emerger and a nice sized creek chub. We did have some dry fly action on the upper West Branch Delaware. Another week should improve things up there. Catch you next time.

      @SavageFlies  4 месяца назад

    Good timing, Matt. Thank you. I think I’ll tie some of these olive ones in size 18 or 20 to see if they will pass as blue wing olive nymphs. I’ve always tied them in black, brown and tan, but it’s about time to put that olive hare’s mask to work.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 месяца назад +1

      Oh yeah Bob, it's fun to mix it up a little. But honestly, I still tie most of mine in natural. I do think though, that an 18 or 20 in olive, dun or natural would certainly make a passable BWO nymph. I was scraping the gravel and rocks on Penn's Creek last fall when they were out, and the nymphs I pulled up were tiny! And basically just a nondescript boring, dark color. But you know, I guess that should tell us something. Maybe that the size and profile of nymphs is more important than the color. :-)

    Good morning Matt. ☕️time on cool damp morning here. About 34F this morning. At least no white stuff. Like the idea of changing the color. I’ve always tied mine in just the standard color. Noticed that the hook appeared to be slipping in your vise. Is that from wear? Mine has done that as well. Have a good rest of your week and enjoy your weekend. I’m headed out fishing on Sunday. We’ll see how that goes.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 месяца назад +1

      Whoa!! Still 34 degrees?? Oh man, you need to move south for good. :-) I was up at the farm this weekend. The forecast called for chilly (50 degrees) and rainy weather both Saturday and Sunday so I headed out to the Savage Friday night. And sure enough, it was nice all day, and started raining the minute I had my waders on. And within 15 minutes it was pouring. So, cold and wet for an hour, and didn't even try on Saturday or Sunday.
      Now about that hook slipping... I hope it's not from wear and tear! This Regal stainless head is almost four years old, but man, I don't want to be replacing it anytime soon. I think maybe I just didn't have it seated far enough as I haven't had any slip the last couple of ties.
      Okay, gotta get back to the comments and email I've been so far behind on. Oh boy, it never ends!

    If I attempt this fly, I'll substitute the hare's mask hair. I don't have a hare's mask and don't want to purchase one. Just seems eerie. But I'll use any other hair or material. Thank you for the demonstration, I appreciate your work and advice.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 месяца назад +1

      You know, I've never thought about it, but being a rabbit hobbyist myself, I can see your point. Those bunny faces are a bit eerie. But you know what else you can use to make these? Rabbit zonker strips. Just a tiny pinch from the strip and you'll have the guard hairs for the tail, and underfur for the dubbing. And a three-inch strip will make a half dozen (or more) of these little nymphs. :-)

    • @BeyerOutdoors
      @BeyerOutdoors 4 месяца назад

      @SavageFlies I've never bought or used zonker straps yet, but I've wanted to. So many patterns use them. Thank you for the advice.

    Nice! I always modeled my generic nymphs after the H's E. I used a cotton tail pelt before I bought a HE mask. Also, I picked out the sides of the thorax to simulate legs, flatens the profile too. Most of all, makes it buggy 😊 So did the Nautilus Frog 🐸 throw snake eyes 👀 on those 🐍 snake heads? Did you go? Throw the 🎲 🎲 dice? 😅 Inquiring minds want to know. Have a great rest of your week Matt! 🤠👍

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 месяца назад +1

      Oh man... no I didn't have any snakehead luck! Believe me, if I caught one of those monsters, there would have already been a video of it! It's not fun fishing with a GoPro strapped to your head for four hours, and not even catching anything is even more frustrating. I did take the kayak back out to Mattawoman trying though. Low tide, trying to get way back in the marshy wetlands, and I saw plenty of them eating. They're like sharks in shallow water. Some of the time you can see their wake on the top of the water, even their fins sticking out of the water at times. But alas, I couldn't get close enough to chuck that monster frog/popper to them. I don't know if other fishermen can cast 50-60 feet with a 9-wt, but I was having a hard time at it. Maybe I need to try my 7-wt and downsize the popper just a bit. I'm not giving up though. I'll get one before the summer is over! :-)
